I just don’t get it. It’s a woman playing in the World Cup, the Women’s World Cup and they’re non-binary which just means they go by they/them and don’t identify as a woman and this is a celebration? Anyone to question it is closed minded? Didn’t people used to get recognised for achieving something or at least for overcoming actual obstacles.

'Historic' - the World Cup's first out trans player

There is much discussion to be found about transgender athletes in sport. In Australia and New Zealand, one has been helping drive their country's bid for World Cup glory.

No it’s not a thing! Quinn is a woman playing on a woman’s team. Quinn might they is super duper special but they’re not. All Quinn is doing is reinforcing the Gender binary while insisting that they’re not like the other girls

its nothing like the genuine bravery of Justin fashanu.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/07/2023 17:03

I mean, yes it is different from a gay man bravely coming out in a homophobic environment.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/07/2023 17:02

It’s still a first thought isn’t it. Even if you don’t like the trans movement. It’s no different from when Fashanu was the first out male player.

No it isn't. Unless you think gay is just an identity label.

Phos · 27/07/2023 16:54

Except we are “supposedly” a more tolerant society now.

Ofcourseshecan · 27/07/2023 16:51

Didn’t see rhywlodes’ comment in time! Good old Private Eye.

Ofcourseshecan · 27/07/2023 16:48

ThomasinaLivesHere · 26/07/2023 22:25

Yep! Still female. You’d think an article about a female playing in the women’s World Cup would firstly not be news and secondly if it was be, the article would be pretty short but they somehow go on and on like it’s something special to behold.

Yes, but remember all the press excitement about “the first man to give birth to a baby” a few years ago? Yes it was Freddie McConnell. “Woman gives birth to baby” wouldn’t have made any headlines.

rhywlodes · 27/07/2023 16:43

It's reminding me of when Kate Middleton had one of her babies and all the newspapers had more-or-less gushing headlines about it, and Private Eye just had 'Woman Has Baby'. (I think I'm remembering that right!)

The headline here is 'Woman Plays Football*'.

*yes, I know she doesn't call her self one. But she is one.

mrshoho · 27/07/2023 15:06

This would only be newsworthy if this individual was playing in the men's competition. And we all know that never in a month of Sundays will that ever ever ever happen.

A non feminine woman is in the women's team. Big deal! There are scores of equally non feminine women there.

PorcelinaV · 27/07/2023 14:55

Reminding me of Dave Chappelle: "I know that trans people make up words to win arguments".

ThomasinaLivesHere · 27/07/2023 11:57

@BreatheAndFocus Exactly! How can you possible say you feel differently to women? How do you know how they feel?

Yes, it’s completely regressive and gives the impression women sit around filing their nails and tittering inanely about their favourite dinner service while Quinn strides out into the world doing ‘manly things’. What Quinn doesn’t realise is that we threw those idiotic stereotypes out years ago and all Quinn and her ilk are doing is bringing them back again.

Non-binary - for those who either don’t have the imagination to conceive a world where men wear make up, women are astronauts, etc, etc, or are too afraid to be GNC without a silly label.

Everyone’s ‘non-binary’. Nobody fulfills 100% of the stereotypes associated with their sex. We just think it’s so obvious, we don’t mention it and that the stereotypes are silly anyway so who gives a crap which ones we fulfil or don’t fulfil. All this navel-gazing idiocy is self-indulgent twaddle.

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 27/07/2023 03:39

I doubt very much that she is the instigator of this press coverage

Fucking misgendering, already. And you an adherent to the cause.

Fuck me if you cant get it right within a forum where you have time galore to type, how are we supposed to manage in real world situations with angry people.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/07/2023 13:36

good on them for being themselves and playing sport at an elite level, don’t see the issue here at all

Why do we need to especially celebrate this one woman in the women's World Cup?

BaronMunchausen · 27/07/2023 13:24

Beowulfa · 27/07/2023 10:28

If this non-binary shit actually meant anything, Quinn would have respectfully declined a place on the team, on account of the Mens/Womens competitions representing a binary division. Which Quinn couldn't possibly have anything to do with, being definitely not a man or a woman.

I therefore conclude that non-binaryness is a load of old bollocks.

True. They is competing in the Women's World Cup, with and against women - but they is not a woman.

PorcelinaV · 27/07/2023 12:22

NecessaryScene · 27/07/2023 06:48

I don't see why it's a story that someone that claims not to identify with femininity can play sport.

We all know that someone like that can play sport.

What, is it going to magically stop her legs working?

Stealing a great response from Twitter...

Sorry but this is insensitive. Non-binary people suffer from extreme self-centredness which makes playing team sports almost impossible.

Yeah that's a good one. 😁

ThomasinaLivesHere · 27/07/2023 12:20

I completely agree that sport should be separated by sex however trans activists disagree and people like Quinn seem to also support transwomen competing in women’s sports. So from their POV how do they justify someone who doesn’t identify as a woman competing in the women’s competition? You would think that would be uncomfortable for their gender dysphoria but I suspect they’ll use all the references to women as evidence for what a victim they are and how they have to fight to make language etc more inclusive.

I don’t agree. If we take that approach then transwomen can argue that they belong in the women’s category. Better to totally disconnect any gender identity from the binary sex categories for sports, sex segregated spaces etc.

honestly, Quinn is doing nothing wrong. I find non-binary a nonsense too but I can’t get worked up about someone wanting to identify that way as long as they do not think that magically entitles them to opposite sex spaces/awards etc.

But if non-binary (AFAB) people are allowed go play in the women’s category, how do you then defend said category against non-binary (AMAB) interlopers?

Quinn is a Trojan horse - first we let Quinn stay on the team, then Quinn insists the team is renamed to be more inclusive, so it becomes the ‘Women and Enby World Cup’ and the next thing you know you have men like the Canadian Rugby fella-with-non-fella-feelz and the Gaelic Football fella-with-non-fella feelz and the women, the actual women, are squeezed out or their safety is at risk.

Quinn should be allowed to participate because Quinn is a biological female and all them’s messing about with language isn’t benign.

Of course Quinn is doing nothing wrong. Equally she is doing nothing special. She’s a woman with short hair playing women’s football with other women with short hair but somehow her personality and inner feelz marks her out for special attention by the press.

All the amazing women at the women’s World Cup doing amazing things to inspire young girls to achieve great things as women, but the BBC turns its attention to a woman who is trying to escape being a woman. Ridiculous.

And to those saying “she’s got short hair”, so many of their teammates are women with short hair 🙄
Its obviously more than that, I’m sure they have had many examples in their sporting career of women with short hair. They feel differently, don’t diminish them

Most women “feel differently” from other women because we’re all individuals not a hive mind. Whenever someone says they ‘don’t identify as a woman’, I always think they must have led quite a sheltered, conservative life because they believe if you don’t conform to stereotypes associated with women you must not be one.

IMO, this person is just attention-seeking. I’ve seen them online so many times but there’s nothing special about them. They need to get out more and realise women don’t have to like make up/like babies/wear dresses/be demure or whatever else crap they subconsciously believe.

sevenbyseven · 27/07/2023 11:08

Quinn has had "top surgery". I don't understand how having no breasts is more non-binary than having breasts?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 27/07/2023 11:01

Im not worked up about Quinn - I just them deeply tedious the same way I find every NB I’m not like the other girls I’m special ne person tedious

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 27/07/2023 11:00

I get that poor reading comprehension can be frustrating but to be fair to them the language used in these articles can be confusing to people who don’t follow this much.

I agree with this. Even the words 'transman' and 'transwoman' are confusing to many, many people, because - unless you already know - there's no logical way of discerning whether the 'man' or the 'woman' part refers to what you biologically are or what you want to identify as.

If anything, linguistically, (imho) I think it would make more sense for them to mean the opposite of what they're usually used to mean. I'm convinced that a very high proportion of people who will staunchly agree with the statement that "TWAW" are actually mistakenly affirming the opposite of what they truly believe.
