She does at least talk about retaining single-sex exceptions for “biological women” but surely to do that requires amending the Equality Act to clarify that sex means biological sex, in line with the Sex Matters demand.

LonginesPrime · 24/07/2023 19:27

Surely division is inevitable when we're talking about a philosophical belief that some people hold and some people don't?

We're not all going to agree if we believe different things about the nature of the issue, and that's obviously where the division is coming from.

Anyone who says the division is manufactured is effectively revealing that they don't believe that people should be allowed to hold gender critical views. It makes them sound as if the notion that biological sex matters is so implausible to them that they have decided it must be caused by some sort of conspiracy or brainwashing, because how could anyone not agree that TWAW?

MavisMcMinty · 24/07/2023 19:24

The division is largely because “the left” (in which I include myself) is heavily bound up with supporting the underdog, the oppressed minority, of being tolerant and open-minded. The rhetoric has overwhelmingly been #BeKind so anyone with GC views is necessarily #Unkind and right-wing to boot.

I suspect many Labour politicians feel trapped in identity politics despite their misgivings, and they seem to think there are more #BeKinders amongst the electorate than, er, women (51%).

After 13+ years of Tory government I cannot bear the thought of being stuck with them AGAIN all because of the ridiculous current gender ideology fad/craze/contagion.

exactly.

I've seen some discussion on twitter that the most worrying aspect is all this would enshine a concept of gender idenity in law where it does not exist at the moment.

So it is worse than weak it is Stonewall clever - manipulating us all - and will make the situation much worse than it is now. Starmer was breakfasting with Stonewall fairly recently.

Really?

I didn’t know that about the gender identity in law part

Labour are playing us. Or trying to

ChristinaXYZ · 24/07/2023 19:22

The division is stoked up by those who say Transwomen are women and denounce any dissenting voices as bigots

exactly.

One thing I will agree with her on is that the Tories are trying to stoke up division.

Unlike those nice men who threaten to punch women in the face and Labour MPs say oh yes both sides blah blah

BlackForestCake · 24/07/2023 19:06

One thing I will agree with her on is that the Tories are trying to stoke up division.

Of course they are. They'd be stupid not to.

Tory HQ:
"Look Algernon, the Socialists are saying that women have todgers! Ha, ha!"
"Really? They look completely insane!"
"Imagine a filly with a todger! I should think the voters will think they're completely nuts, what?"
"Rather! I say, Squiffy – should we use this against them?"
"What – like point out that they're spouting absolute bally nonsense that everybody knows is absolute hogwash?"
"Yes!"
"Well, of course not, that wouldn't be sporting! We are Tories, after all!"

This really annoys me when they carp on about how demeaning it is for trans people to have a medical diagnosis, this pales in comparison to the utter degredation, dehumanising, humiliating, intrusive process people who require Disability Benefits go through or even to get a fucking Blue Badge for parking.

Just fuck off with this rhetoric Ms Dodds.

She's simply re-hashing the Stonewall script. They've been busy little bees at Stonewall HQ this last week or so,

Even the way it’s framed shows where women are in the hierarchy

“Labour will lead on transgender rights” not “Labour will lead on protecting women’s rights to single sex spaces”

Of course.

It’s not for women

ResisterRex · 24/07/2023 18:23

Labour Twitter are calling it a "huge achievement". This was retweeted by Lesbian Labour:

How is the removal of consent, a "huge achievement"?

Let's see. If Rosie D gets an apology & the Labour women's groups (who have had to tolerate misogyny central for so long) - get some long awaited meetings. Yes? 🙄

Dodds criticizes the SNP bill but Labour actually backed it Scotland and whipped their MSPs to support it.

Basically every other party are doing it wrong. Only Labour would do gender reform in exactly the right way. Maintaining the exact right balance between “stoking a culture war” and taking a “cavalier approach”.

QueenHippolyta · 24/07/2023 17:41

I'd believe Labour were sincere if they apologized to Rosie Duffield , condemned publically the transactivist that punched the woman in Scotland and injured her and invited Labour Women protecting women's rights to advise them.

None of this has happened.
It's Labour's fake ploy to get women's votes.

They have tried it hide the "spousal veto" (what a terrible term) but it's getting noticed now, even by those who were earlier seemingly happy about the proposals in the Graun.

Absolutely. And think about the differential - one is about the right to get access to a parking space. The other is the right to have a status in law that is based on an outright lie.

My favourite Twitter thread on this so far is this one, which outlines the different ways in which Dodds's article is cynical, misleading or downright untruthful:

LoobiJee · 24/07/2023 07:04

Dodds said the current process meant that “a panel of anonymous doctors” got to decide something of momentous significance, “based on reams of intrusive medical paperwork and evidence of any surgery”. She added: “This is demeaning for trans people and meaningless in practice. A diagnosis provided by one doctor, with a registrar instead of a panel, should be enough.”

In other words getting a GRC will be every bit as rigorous as going to your GP and getting signed off sick with stress.

This really annoys me when they carp on about how demeaning it is for trans people to have a medical diagnosis, this pales in comparison to the utter degredation, dehumanising, humiliating, intrusive process people who require Disability Benefits go through or even to get a fucking Blue Badge for parking.

I thought that was funny tbh. The SNP bill was just a cheap stunt to annoy Westminster but ours will be wonderful and please everyone. No really.....

ResisterRex · 24/07/2023 15:18

So she has:

twitter.com/anneliesedodds/status/1683434056225112065?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"To modernise, simplify and reform the gender recognition law, we will:

Replace the panel of anonymous doctors who oversee decisions with a registrar model.

Replace the 'acquired gender' period with a reflection period.

Scrap the outdated spousal consent mechanism."

She doesn't understand marriage law either, then.

God this is just awful.

Some people will fall for this superficial washing of their policies with vague phrases like 'single sex exemptions' when Labour don't seem to use any of those words in the same way as the rest of us. And are using the flannel to hide what they are really up to - self-id by another name and trashing the rights of women in relationships.

I actually think this makes Labour even worse than I thought. They're going to do all this to women but hide it. They have not even the courage of their convictions. They're going to do us over and lie whilst it happens.

Lord knows the Tories have been slow to reacat but they have listened and many of them seem to get what the problem is. I just wish they would actaully DO something as well. The Tories are so SLOW.
