Fuckin stonewall. 'We should wait for evidence that sex is actually a factor in athletics and competitive team sport. We expect that putting on frilly knicks sorts all that out nicely and await the science.'

LoobiJee · 27/07/2023 06:31

Ha! Excellent using their own words to show how ridiculous they are, there.

“Stonewall issued a statement saying…we should wait for evidence that males are stronger and faster than females on average before barring transwomen from women’s sport”.

Also enjoyed “submitted to the full Frost/Nixon”.

No idea how readable this will be.

Lots of blokes read Private Eye. I also suspect that Ian Hislop is a Good Egg.

CaptainBatEars · 26/07/2023 15:10

Iain's interview with Beth has made the news in the latest Private Eye, or '39 waffle-filled minutes' as they describe it. It's nothing new, just documents the disaster and then the reverse ferret 24 hours later, but interesting to see them picking it up. The overall tone of the article is v critical of Stonewall, though, with a v final snark at Nancy Kelley.

'Is everything ok Iain? Blink twice and sweat profusely for ‘no’'

They just won't answer.
But good letter.

That’s what I thought, and if they don’t respond they undermine even further Anderson’s message in his “challenge” to groups like the LGBA to sit down and talk. I wonder if he’ll be let out again on his own to talk to anyone now.

Yep, they’ll go the NSPCC route

no answer

There won't be anyone they can meet that isn't a hate group now. No-one.

nice letter

slide your way out of that one you sweaty little toad

Yes! They either admit that's what they think of sex matters or they have to deny it and meet with them.

Such fun!

Whenever I start reading a sentence with the word "literal" or "literally" on my social media feeds I assume that it will either be aspirational or batshit lies.

Maybe it's my algorithms.

It’s one of those paradoxes that makes my head spin that the literal meaning of literal is literally changing.

"a literal handful of trans women"

I think they mean a metaphorical handful of trans women, no?

😆🤣🙃

But more seriously, I think this lends credence to @AlisonDonut 's suggestion the interns are behind this press release. Or at least younger members of staff.
This misuse of the word "literal" is not something I've ever heard or read from someone my age or older. Which means everyone involved with writing, proof-reading and editing this document is under 40.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 23/07/2023 10:54

I would worry that when stuck between a rock (male leaders via self ID) and a hard place (a legal challenge from a bog standard male without an internal lady-gender) Girl Guiding will take the easy escape hatch and become a mixed sex organisation (which will no doubt cause a dwindle-to-eventual death situation).

When a boundary challenge is mounted on a single sex space or service for females, there are only two viable options, the full-on tervern defensive battle (invoking the single sex exemption in the Equality Act and possibly getting a rat nailed to your door) or capitulation.

If the org/service or business isn’t committed to the single sex model then it’s much easier to completely roll over and cede all territory to ‘inclusive/gender neutral’ than it is to defend the halfway house of single sex for females + some very special males with pink souls.

Are there enough women left in Guiding who are committed to the single sex model? Because from what I’ve seen from the outside looking in, the paid management are way more likely to roll over and declare Guiding ‘Inclusive of ALL genders’ than they are to listen to the volunteers who actually run the meetings (and care passionately about opportunities for girls).
That will cause volunteers to lose their motivation and the whole thing will eventually wither away to nothing.

Once the E.D.I. (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) Vampire makes its way into your org, you are pretty much fucked.

The letters should be rearranged to spell out D.I.E. instead.

There is a massive opportunity for Guiding to grow in cities and bigger towns due to shifting population demographics. Girls from conservative (small c!) religious and/or immigrant backgrounds can benefit enormously from single sex extra curricular activities, as can girls in looked-after provision.
Other girls who don’t have these social restrictions benefit from mixing and integrating with the girls they would unlikely to know otherwise. Plus the benefits of girls-only provision is widely known from data on single sex schools

I use a women-only gym (an extra room at a mixed gym) and love it. It’s given me a much more diverse group of female friends.

To bring this back on topic, no doubt Stonewall would happily have my friends self-exclude from public life so a middle male in floral leggings and a crop top can take up their place in the ‘Ladies Gym’ without challenge. Unlike GG’s I think my council-owned gym would defend using the single sex exemption (only 1 of the 9 gyms under the brand banner has a designated women-only space and it’s in an area with a large number of Muslim residents. It’s clearly a proportional means to a legitimate aim, the aim being increasing activity of women from minority and marginalised communities for the aim of improved public health for all).

NecessaryScene · 23/07/2023 10:00

As a member of Girlguiding I’m actually looking for a male member of the organisation who would like to sue them for excluding them from the leader positions.

I've struggled to figure out a good scenario to actually carry out this fight, but that actually sounds pretty ideal.

I imagine they'd want to fold and open up those positions to avoid the case, if they already have mixed-sex staff. But if that would get them in more trouble...

mb2512cat · 23/07/2023 09:53

NecessaryScene · 22/07/2023 07:24

I can't get my head around the exemptions. It there is a defendable reason for having a single sex space (proportionate and legitimate) surely this means the rationale for excluding males (regardless of how they identify) is built in.

Yes. The exemption is to the default "no sex discrimination" rule. Not anything about "trans".

To be permitted to have a reason to sex discriminate, you need a proportionate and legitimate reason to exclude males. And if you have that, then that obviously includes transwomen.

And failure to exclude transwomen would call in to question the exclusion of other males - if you're prepared to admit some males, then it's not clear you can any more justify excluding other males under those sex-discrimination exceptions then you can't justify excluding others. This is one of those things we've yet to see a test case for.

As a member of Girlguiding I’m actually looking for a male member of the organisation who would like to sue them for excluding them from the leader positions. Girlguiding have two types of roles for adults: those at are mixed sex and those that are female only. They do have male adult volunteers; typically dads and husbands of female members. But because they allow males without a GRC to take on what were female-only positions purely on the basis of self-ID, which is against the organisation’s Charter and registration with the Charity Commission, on what basis are they excluding other men who remain legally male from those positions? Would be good to get a crowd finder going and see what GGHQ do…

I kept getting distracted trying to work out his accent (Scottish / Cornish mix?) and had to stop looking at his facial expressions, but still kept just shouting bollocks and just answer the question. He couldn’t really have done worse could he?

Yes, the constantly shifting accent was very distracting. Not quite John o' Groats to Lands End and back again, but his very mannered way of speaking probably made the inconsistencies in pronunciation more obvious. Despite the fact that he was visibly under a lot of stress, it felt as if he was doing his best to give a good performance. A pretence of being competent, reasonable and intelligent. Unfortunately his lines were crap and nobody was fooled. Or happy.
