Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

The thing is for me when you strip away the superfluous the economic policies are similar.

There’s little room to manoeuvre these days and if they dropped some of the more idiotic ones then fine.

But the social implications are really concerning me. And even worse everywhere else is doing the same so tie little terf island is dwindling.

So depressing and worrying

Sunny, I watch the law and objective measures tighten against TRA...Forstater, Bailey, OU etc...the Cass Report, the EHRC advice, one sports body after another, the implosion of Self ID in Scotland/S35 challenge, the report of seven nations pediatricians slating the lack of rigor in trans youth medicalisation.
.

At the same time, the trans tarmac hitting the material reality tarmac meaning trans messaging is getting more skittish and extreme ie more anxious it's losing the argument with institutions and the public...Mika Minio faux breastfeeding, Sarah Jane Baker furore, lists of left wingers supporting these two as long as your arm.

And in the middle is the govt and political leaders. I'm any sane world, a leader and political elite would look at the tsunami of bad outcomes soon to come (the lawsuits will be unlike anything we've ever seen, so complicit have our ruling classes been), the warning klaxon of Cass, the sheer narcissism on display...and bring policy back to a sensible equilibrium (zero tolerance of bullying of those unhappy with their bodies, but strict adherence to material reality and sex based class distinctions on safe spaces, sports etc).

But no, our governing elites are tacking away from what Cass and Sarah Jane Baker teach us, and to capitulating to the narcissistic crowds.

Nothing. Presiding over the worst collapse in investigation and convictions of rape imho ranks right up there in awful dereliction of duty.

I know.Angry

But they've commissioned a couple of reports and one of them has written some sternly worded letters. FFS.

Sunny, agreed. I'm just replying to a straight Q.
Everyone here is saying, give Labour a chance, you don't know for sure..well, Drakeford and Sturgeon show the way forward for left untrammeled power.

Pure incompetence laced with social fervour.
We have our Petri Dish with modern leftist allowed to cultivate.

The end result is pure cult of personality leadership, zero tolerance for dissent, and captured institutional groupthink.

Starmer may be a smoother, more palatable leader. But the rot is the same.

What's also becoming apparent, evident in Starmer's body language and UTurns, is that he doesn't want the job, Labour are singularly unprepared for power.

In this case, he may be more tempted to go for the easy win, the thing that gets him instant kudos for zero effort. The trans conversion ban and anti hate speech laws.

There doesn't seem to be anyone who can answer the question: what have the Tories done for women in the last 13 years?

It's been answered many times in many threads, including this one, you just pretend not to notice and never answer those posts.

Is the left any better? I look at what the SNP are doing and it’s horrific imo

If we end up the same way well.. fuck that.

Other than that 30 free hours helped me and many other women. Plus SEISS saved my bacon

Am I correct you are male? For women getting access to cheaper childcare makes all the difference.

I don't think apportioning blame for how people choose to vote is any more helpful than finger wagging at anyone who doesn't support Labour. It's a dreadful dilemma - I still don't know what I'm going to do - and we'll all have to make the best decision we can.

There doesn't seem to be anyone who can answer the question: what have the Tories done for women in the last 13 years?

This HAS been answered, e.g. on pages 15 & 16.

In addition, one might look at the work of Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, a staunch & active supporter of women & children who's authoritative yet approachable & rather wonderful. The discussions she organised on women's issues were really good & she has so many useful contacts. Her swift letters have become the stuff of legend.

I watched Starmer on Laura Kuensberg's show yesterday. That this guy could be let anywhere near power is scary, and that's just his bland beige nothingness re purging of any left wing principles of helping the more disadvantaged in society.

But knowing that despite being as sappy as one could on the economy and public services, he's hardwired on leftist ID politics, grievance race politics to start, but most critically his abandoning of material reality to follow the modern Left's playbook on trans politics.

I'm more sure than ever he'll achieve next to nothing on the economy and true class based lifting of the disadvantaged, but he'll be gagging to make his mark on his legacy in such things as a so-called trans conversion ban and draconian restrictions on so-called online anti-hate speech.

This will give him his warm fuzzy feeling, rather than anything meaningful like re-nationalising water, truly raising the living standards of the poorest.

I really mentally struggled with not voting Labour because of his take on trans, with so many reasons to turf the Tories out.

But I'll be damned if I'm gonna vote for nothing more than a duller version of Sunak while Starmer engineers irreversible change on trans law.

I agrée with this. He will go for what feels easy and appeals to his sense of the morality that should be enforced on the public. The Scots experience should suggest to him that this might not be an easy win but can he learn from experience?

SunnyEgg · 17/07/2023 14:04

There doesn’t seem to be anyone claiming Labour won’t be worse on this issue

The best pro Labour or left have is don’t talk about what they’ll do.

Since people know what’s coming, they can take responsibility when women are totally screwed NZ / Canada style

I remember, during the last Labour government, saying to a friend that while Labour & the Tories would both be happy to see us all in the gutter, the Tories would at least leave us alone there, while Labour would stand over us giving us a patronising little homily.

It's for Labour to up its game & make the country WANT them & the future they would bring. It feels like they've thrown in the towel already & don't want to be in power.

I don’t know, but I think the Tory party has had its little fling with a long on charm short on substance leader and having had its fingers burnt, might not want a repeat. Id rate Badenoch as having a better chance than mordaunt now. Sword related showing off notwithstanding

I’d look at wider context for next leader

Mass displacement is only going to get more pronounced

Any party will need a leader that can get cut through as citizens won’t be ok with it, whether Labour or Tories are in

The ping pong on the bill atm is very interesting

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/07/2023 13:45

Fact: we are here because of the Tory.
Fact: even now, they've still not released guidance for schools.

Opinion: they're doing nothing more than blowing smoke up our asses on this issue.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 17/07/2023 13:44

RealityFan · 17/07/2023 13:38

It would be quite the cosmic irony if Penny Mordaunt, a woman, is the one who facilitates Starmer, a man, in his direction to trash women's rights.

They both feel they're On The Right Side Of History here.

I'm not sure people really appreciate how significant it was that the Tories retreated from self-ID. It's a big deal for us and for society, that this didn't happen. But political parties tend not to go to consultation on something as significant as that, and backtrack. It is of course, the point of consultation, but I think it's too easily forgotten what we came so close to losing and how we'd never get it back, once gone.

I also agree about the Cass Review. That came following Mordaunt's supposed research that never led to anything. Again, they could've mumbled about that being "complex and ongoing" (or some PR BS). But they didn't. That review is being looked at round the world.

These are not small things.

True and fair. Feeling better about my party membership now!

SunnyEgg · 17/07/2023 13:40

Well if people vote Starmer in or do their best to make sure the alternative is out they can’t complain after when it happens.

And all those old threads where you were running around predicting they would be in the leadership campaign

Nope. I’ll take facts but some people are just not particularly reliable

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/07/2023 13:35

Penny Mordaunt isn't leader yet. Had Rishi not urged his supporters to vote Liz Truss she would be.

Ha at this. Penny Mourdant is currently leader as they thought.

Oh hang on…

LlynTegid · 17/07/2023 13:32

OP, please choose the SDP if they meet your single issue.
