Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

Ah no, you haven't listened to starmer.

He actually says safe spaces for women, which is not the same as single sex.
It's a minor detail and obviously he hopes we wont notice. But we have, its been said a lot too, so he knows what hes doing.

Does he? I am not sure underestimating the intelligence of the electorate to this extent is really that smart.
poor little Keir is under the illusion that current polling demonstrates that people like him. They don’t; they just hate the other guys. If he had more nous he’d act accordingly.

Streeting may voice support for single sex spaces (so does Starmer) but his party also says .1% of women have a penis. It’s fairly clear to me that Labour’s fudge will be that these penis having “women” are also women for the purposes of single sex spaces. Starmer is a lawyer, this grey area is being carefully maintained, so that Labour can sneakily face both ways.

I'm a Tory for this reason. I used to be because of the economy and lower taxes but a combination of recent governments, Covid and Brexit has put paid to that.

ScreamingBeans · 15/07/2023 20:36

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd even consider voting tory. I thought Blair was too right wing.

But I cannot vote for a party which would make the lives of the next generation of women so much harder than it is now. I cannot see myself voting Labour ever again, unless they give a fulsome apology for the way they've treated women and a cast-iron guarantee that they will not pretend they believe men are women or pass legislation forcing the public to,

quantumbutterfly · 15/07/2023 20:32

Does anyone know how kjk's party of women is getting along for potential candidates.

There was also a national health action party at some point but I can't see any info. on potential candidates.

There are millions of disenfranchised voters out here and if we don't vote or we spoil our votes to make a point, we achieve nothing.

SunnyEgg · 15/07/2023 20:29

If people are happy for Labour to get in will they be happy with a Canada or NZ situation?

And if not what will they do about it

RealityFan · 15/07/2023 20:25

dcbc1234 · 15/07/2023 20:24

To be fair to Liz Truss she was one of the first Tories to come out and say that Government Departments shouldn't be paying money to Stonewall and that they should leave.

You've pretty much summed it up.

She said all that when ?

And what year is it now ?

dcbc1234 · 15/07/2023 20:24

RealityFan · 15/07/2023 18:35

I'm already resolving to voting for an independent. This is Liz Truss country, about as safe a Tory seat as they come.

Can't wait to torture her, and the Lab and LD candidates over the What Is A Woman? question.

But I've resolved never to vote for any party that is happy to defy material reality.

dcbc1234 · 15/07/2023 20:22

Streeting used to work for Stonewall and was involved with the witch hunt against those in the Labour Party with gender critical views. So I trust him about as far as I can throw him.

Yes never forget these weasel words from Labour. Starmer claimed that the law said TWAW and if Labour says lies that it supports single sex spaces, how they define who qualifies for access to that single sex space is crucial.

No, south west.

Starmer, like all of his kind, thinks he is cleverer than the electorate, and that the attempted sleight of hand will not be spotted.
let him try it. He’ll find out, the pompous fool.

maltravers · 15/07/2023 19:22

So my question to canvassers would be: does Labour support single sex spaces/sports/prisons? If so, does Labour consider a trans woman a woman for the purposes of qualifying for single sex status?

I believe Starmer will squeeze in, and various spinning tops will clash into each other meaning he'll fail over four years. Badenoch or Cates needs to be the leader to offer a culturally distinct message to win in 2028.

Long term, I think independent candidates are probably the answer, to send sufficient message to all the established parties that the electorate don't want them and are no longer prepared to support them. That would force the return of actual representation.

However at the next election the only realistic end point is con or lab. And most likely lab with a raggle taggle bunch of every other leftist nut job party in a coalition, which brings the absolute worst of critical theory politics and unleashes it. They will tell voters: we won on this. This (ending of women's rights and child safeguarding) is what you said you wanted!

I cannot vote for any party I want, who I respect or want in power or feel represented by. I'm down to trying to vote tactically to have another five years to fight for women's rights to be retained where at least the government is dragging its feet and has some doubts instead of shouting 'full speed ahead! Yippee, fuck women!'. And hopefully something better may come along.

The “something better” will most likely be a Badenoch led Tory party; which may well happen, at least if she’s put before the party membership as an option. She’s v popular at grassroots level by all accounts; her directness is appreciated.

SunnyEgg · 15/07/2023 18:47

I don’t think Labour care if people spoil their ballot or vote independent they just don’t want you to vote Tory due to their woeful stance on gender ideology

I respect anyone's choice to vote on a single issue but voting Tory is not a vote to protect women's rights. Their policies have made women in this country worse off over the last 13 years.

Public sector pay freezes affect women disproportionately (80% of NHS employees are women; in the adult social care sector, around 82% of workers are women; and around 76% of teachers in England are women).

One in five people in the UK is in poverty with women making up the majority of this group.

28% of households made up of a single parent and at least one child report running out of food and not being able to afford more on a regular basis.

Sure. But how are Labour going to be significantly different? Their economic policy looks very similar to the Tories'.

ThisTimeIts · 15/07/2023 16:01

Rudderneck · 15/07/2023 15:25

I live in Canada. I would just like to say, don't underestimate the consequences if these kinds of laws get changed.

It will suddenly become almost impossible to speak out on the issue. If you feel people risk their jobs now, it will be 100 times worse.

It is Handmaids tale in reverse there. I am watching with horror as you destroy the children, women and there is also the MAID Eugenics / organ transplants.

It makes me physically sick.

That's what Labour will do here too, the liberal left are worse than the Tory party and I never thought it was possible.

ThisTimeIts · 15/07/2023 15:57

Froodwithatowel · 15/07/2023 14:53

Not to mention the additional barriers raised for those marginalised women that now can't use public toilets, go swimming, go to the women's groups they used to attend, the other lifelines provided via tax payer funding and public services to reach and support those groups. including men fucks this beyond repair .

No matter how nicely a politician dresses it up in pomo burble.

This bunch put men first. While saying they don't believe sex exists.
And they put a chosen political idea ahead of reality regardless of impact on vulnerable people.

Over my dead body do I vote for that.

The worst safeguarding fail in our lifetime.

explainthistomeplease · 15/07/2023 15:55

Chatting to the chap who'll be our Lib Dem candidate at the next election (I know him socially) and asked him the same question as OP did the canvasser. He totally dodged it and said he hadn't considered any of this 'gender stuff'. I didn't quite call him a liar. But told him I found that hard to believe, and that if true he'd better have some credible answers.

nebulae · 15/07/2023 15:44

@Rudderneck could you tell us a little bit about what it's like on the ground in Canada now? I'd be interested to hear what the actual impact has been.

I've no idea if your stats are correct, however if we add men into women as will, happen with self Id, none of your stats will matter.

Women will not be a stand alone demographic, added to the women demographic will be any man who says he is a woman.

How can you fight for fairness for women if you cant identify the women.

Yes torys bad, and yet Tory can state what a woman is. How about that? Who knew they can tell the truth sometimes.

You do you, in the meantime I'll vote for the party that will keep men out of single sex spaces or at least say they will.

This should not be a fight any woman should have to fight, this should have been set in stone decades ago. It hasn't been and now it matters. It matters so much to me that I'm voting Tory as it stands.
All labour have to do is match that.
