Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

I am still waiting to hear what the Tories have done to better the lives of women in the 13 years they have been in a position to do so.

You'll be waiting forever @calimali. Even now, they can't be arsed repairing the damage they've done in the name of Trans rights, #BeKind, #CompassionateConservatives. And they're not finished yet.

Can't deny any of this as a long term Tory voter.

Is still doesn’t mean Labour won’t totally destroy any hope on this after the next GE

Look around at other countries for a glimpse

maltravers · 16/07/2023 21:58

What do you think of the canvasser on p1 post 1 by the OP Boots? Was she wrong? Have you tried arguing this with Labour HQ and winning hearts and minds there?

Just because you repeat the lie, it doesn't make it true @Ourladycheesusedatum.

Who put rapists into women's prisons?
The Tories.

Who said men should be allowed to identify as women on a legal basis?
Tory PM Theresa May.

Who has presided over the education system that has destroyed the body and minds of our children?

The Tory party.

Whose MPs have reported women to their employers/the police for GC views or just retweeting JKR?

The Tory party.
What party are in power yet still refusing to safeguard women's rights?
The Tory Party.

As I said upthread, stop pissing on our heads and telling us it's raining.

Can't deny any of this as a long term Tory voter.

I know that women's lot will be worse under the Tories. Including on the TRA front. Sunak will not be PM in 2 years time. Penny TWAW Mordaunt may be.

Mordaunt as PM in 2025? Hmm

All keir has to say is women need single sex spaces.

Like he did here?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/04/05/keir-starmer-backs-rishi-sunak-rewrite-equality-laws-women/

Starmer quotes from that article:

"A spokesman for Sir Keir said: “Clarification is a good thing. We’ll look at what’s brought forward.”"

"In an interview with the Sunday Times, Sir Keir said: “I think there is a fear that somehow there could be the rolling back of some of the things that have been won.

“There are still many battles that need to go ahead for women and I don't think we should roll anything back.""
He didn't say - in that article - "women need single sex spaces".

Starmer usually talks about ‘safe spaces’ which include men

I wouldn’t start from here, but here’s where we are. It’s all relative and the question is, who is worst? Look at how Rosie Duffield is treated compared to Cates and Badenoch and you have your answer.

Exactly. It's almost 2 yrs since I wrote to my Labour MP begging him to attend & vote on men in women's prisons. I know it's almost 2 yrs because it was the eve of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Wouldn't it be wonderful, I told him, if women & girls could self I'd as men/boys & carry on unimpeded with their lives?
I also told him, despite the Tories sitting back whilst women's words, spaces & safety were pissed up the wall - at a time expedient the Tories will wash their hands & Labour will end up holding the baby.

Yes - the Tories have some of the most vehement MRAS/TRAS in politics sitting on their benches - NokesForTheBlokes, PennysWithTheMenny to name a couple, but you know what? No man or woman in the Tory party couldn't attend conference. Starmer/Labour banned Lesbian Labour from coference, Joan Smith has asked him innumerable times to meet, to listen to women's concerns.

"Is it true to say that only women can have a cervix?"

"That is something that SHOULDN'T BE SAID"
Keir Starmer MP Leader of the Labour Party
Former Attorney General & HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER .

The Labour party can go fuck itself 7 ways from Wednesday before I ever give them vote.

BaronMunchausen · 16/07/2023 21:43

The Tories have run down public services and transferred wealth from the poor to the rich. But can someone pushing 'vote Labour ' explain how Labour would be any different? Their economic policies appear to be the same, so why would the outcomes be different?

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 21:42

Ourladycheesusedatum · 16/07/2023 21:40

Wrong, this started with labour. We have told you enough times now
Remember the gra 2004? That started this.
You should actually do some research instead of giving out the same wrong soundbites on every one of these threads.

And this. At least read some of the posts.

Maddy70 · 16/07/2023 21:42

I never understand people who vote on one issue only. No party fits everyone's ideals.

I wouldn't vote tory as I prefer family's to be able to afford to feed their children

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 21:40

Still in some alternate version of reality, Penny Mordaunt dragged out as an argument. Madness.

Yep it’s going to be dire. Our poor dds (if posters have them) when we’re fully NZ and Canada style.

It's even easier for the current PM to fix this issue given he has the power right now. Why do we need to wait for a change of government?

calimali · 16/07/2023 21:34

I am still waiting to hear what the Tory's have done to better the lives of women in the 13 years they have been in a position to do so.

Every time the Tories cut welfare benefits and public services it does more harm to women than it does to men. Women will bear the brunt of cuts to social services because far more women are carers of the elderly, the sick and the young.

If you truely want to make the lives of women in the UK better and fairer then voting Tory is not the way to do it.

IhaveanewTVnow · 16/07/2023 21:34

I had a Green Party candidate at my door at the last local election. He was a full TWAW. Tried to tell me how oppressed TW are. He left me shaking with his attitude as a potential political representative.

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 21:31

How can people not look forward?

Will it be better or worse on this issue under Labour?

Each time people avoid this I think yep they can see there’s no case for it being better

Depressing. I doubt what they deliver will be anywhere near worth it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:28

AgathaSpencerGregson · 16/07/2023 21:25

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:04

What are your views on the Tory party pushing the TRA agenda to the point they put male sex offenders into women's prisons and have overseen/ are responsible for the trans shitshow that's happening to us today @AgathaSpencerGregson?

As I have said - I think twice now - much policy has been made as a result of capture of state institutions which is disgraceful. However, the legislative framework does provide some scope for push back. The Tories want to reinforce this. Labour wants to weaken it. The Tories recognise that the encroachments which have happened are wrong and have taken some action (not enough). Labour approves of those encroachments and want more.
in a contest between shit and shitter, I choose shit. It’s not great but it can always get worse and under labour, it will.

calimali · 16/07/2023 21:25

How are the Tories 'doing something' though? They have had 13 years to do something and yet here we are.

If the Tories wanted to do something for women they could do more to support the 80 plus % of single parent households that are headed by a woman. Ignoring those families who are living in poverty is not helping women.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 16/07/2023 21:20

calimali · 16/07/2023 20:27

The Tories have been in power for over 13 years. If they are so good at supporting women then why do we still have to fight so hard for women's rights? I for one am not happy with accpeting the staus quo thank you very much.

If you vote Tory you are Tory. Don't pretend that you are doing so with any reluctance because 'they know what a woman is'. I have seen the way that senior Tories have behaved - and I really don't like their interpretation of what the role of women is.

There is a really easy fix to this issue.
It's in labour's hands to say they will repeal the gra.

I will currently vote Tory, not because I'm a Tory, because they are doing something.
Labour will also do something, but that's in the wrong direction for me
