Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

We are going to have a lot more to worry about than sport and public toilets if the conservatives get back in. Single mums already are living in one room with children having to move schools and can't afford food. Food will be even more filled of additives making us sick. Paying for healthcare will take people's savings. Destruction of the environment and public transport.

Best idea is to join the Labour party so can discuss and impact

Last I heard, if you had terfy views they dont want you.

RebelliousCow · 17/07/2023 08:24

Regarding the NHS; it is broken and can no loger do the job it was set up to do. It requires fundamental change, not just more money.

Some of us are ex Labour party members; and some were expelled from their local CLPS on account of their views on Sex and Gender.

I seriously doubt Labour is going to be able to make much impact on the issues you talk about. They are also committed to getting inflation down and no more public spending. PlussSome of these issues are gloabl in nature - such as the issues with uncontrolled migration. Britain is spending half a million pounds per day on hotel accommodation for illegal migrants.

Where I live one landlord attempted to evict some key workers and students from their accommodation so that he could make more money from accommodating migrants instead. Some of the poorer councils are being expected to take a disproportionate number and are having to provide services and facilities out of their own much reduced budgets. What is Labour's answer to this?

Covid and lockdown caused a lot of damage to the economy - with many businesses failing, and some still are now that the financial support has ceased. Lots of people never returned to work after lock-down and many developed mental health problems. Labour were always quick to call for harder, faster and longer lock-downs - including for schools.

So far they are big on criticism, but short on actual solutions to most of the problems we face. I suspect a lot of anger when things don't immediately improve in the way people are hoping for. The unions and the traditional left has already turned its back on Starmer - in fact they hate him with a psssion almost as strong as for the Tories.

I am surprised anyone believes dialogue with the Labour Party is a way forward given that they won't even talk to The Labour Women's Declaration in public. If that changes then I will reconsider - it will be one of my weathervanes as the election approaches.

I'm not sure people really appreciate how significant it was that the Tories retreated from self-ID. It's a big deal for us and for society, that this didn't happen. But political parties tend not to go to consultation on something as significant as that, and backtrack. It is of course, the point of consultation, but I think it's too easily forgotten what we came so close to losing and how we'd never get it back, once gone.

I also agree about the Cass Review. That came following Mordaunt's supposed research that never led to anything. Again, they could've mumbled about that being "complex and ongoing" (or some PR BS). But they didn't. That review is being looked at round the world.

These are not small things.

Absolutely!

All of that hard work and effor leading up to the bill on Self Id paid off. Now Britain is 'Terf Island' and a beacon of hope and know-how for other countries to follow.

All of those countries who passed self Id at the same time as gay equality - are now starting to back-track and question.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:04

What are your views on the Tory party pushing the TRA agenda to the point they put male sex offenders into women's prisons and have overseen/ are responsible for the trans shitshow that's happening to us today @AgathaSpencerGregson?

All of the parties had been asleep at the wheel as gender ideology was inserted, under-cove,r into all of our institutions - primarily at the behest of Stonewall on the back of the goodwill accumulated on gay rights.

Thanks to the grassroots movement to push back against Self Id people have now woken up - including some in government ( have you seen Kemi Badenoch in action?) - and that is why Self Id was blocked.

When that was happening, the Labour party were still expelling women from local CLPs and referring to WPUK and FPFW as 'hate groups'. Had Labour been in power then, we'd already have Self ID.

Anyone who believes that the Tories have done, or will do, anything to support the rights of women are seriously deluded.

Well, they have commissioned the Cass Review; have blocked Self Id; and have now issued new guidance to schools about socially transitioning children.
They are the only party to have members speak out in support of reality and the importance of biological sex. They also blocked Self ID in Scotland

None of the other parties have done any of that. In fact there is radio silence on all of the above.

RebelliousCow · 17/07/2023 07:18

I know it’s frustrating. But if you write to your Labour candidate telling them why you are spoiling the vote you would otherwise have cast for them, they can’t pretend they don’t know.

My Labour MP knows how some of her constituents feel on the issue but she genuinely doesn't care.

What we have been planning is an under-cover campaign in her constituency in the lead up to an election, whereby we make sure that the local women from ethnic and racial minorities that she says she is there to represent above all others ( she's full on 'critical race theory' too) know about and understand what her views and intentions are on this issue. Many would be horrified.

Her constituency ( mine too) usually has a very low turn out. People tend to be disinterested and apathetic.

RebelliousCow · 17/07/2023 07:11

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 19:41

@RebelliousCow you keep taking and don't wheesht. Tell them how you oppose the TRA and MRA policies pushed by the The Tories for the last 10 or so years.

The push for men to define themselves into women's spaces. The push to monetise children's way out of the natural process of puberty with lifelong effects and subsequent economic and social costs.

Tell them what you want.

I've done all of that, believe me. It is like knocking your head against a brick wall. All of those three parties are committed to Self Id -even if there may be a few recalcitrants in their ranks.

In my constituency the Labour candidate for MP will win whatever I do - though we do have a Lib Dem councillor, because in terms of local politics many people have simply had enough of Labour. My Lib Dem councillor uses pronouns.

RebelliousCow · 17/07/2023 07:05

SunnyEgg · 16/07/2023 19:44

What about the one you didn’t mention?

Those are the only three parties with any representation where I live ( plus maybe a few small far left parties who hate mainstream Labour). There has not been a Tory MP or councillor in the city since the early 1970's.

There will be a Tory candidate for the election. They always put one up - but ususally a very junior person who does it just for the experience of standing, and the party in having a name on the ballot. I've never voted Conservative, and if I knew the view of the candidate on the issue of sex and gender then I might consider it.

The thing is, because they have no chance of winning here there tends to be no visible campaign prior to the election - so you would never meet them, nor hear them speak.

Under the Tories its a long slow process, under Labour it will be fast and brutal. The end result will be the same for women.

I read your post and then saw this (part 2 of a 3 parter):

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 01:58

And look, Jaime Wallis is irrelevant. He is a joke, has no power, will never influence policy. He will be lucky to get reelected. It's embarrassing that he keeps being brought up as a counter to the fact that the LP is almost totally captured, with some of it's best and most prominent MPs saying that male rapists who identify as women should be in woman's prisons - and in fact seem to actually believe it.

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 01:53

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:36

I know that women's lot will be worse under the Tories. Including on the TRA front. Sunak will not be PM in 2 years time. Penny TWAW Mordaunt may be.

Yes, you were convinced she would win the last leadership contest hands down, and were wanting about the disastrous implications all over MN, I don't think your political nous is all that trustworthy on this topic.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 16/07/2023 22:49

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 21:51

Just because you repeat the lie, it doesn't make it true @Ourladycheesusedatum.

Who put rapists into women's prisons?
The Tories.

Who said men should be allowed to identify as women on a legal basis?
Tory PM Theresa May.

Who has presided over the education system that has destroyed the body and minds of our children?

The Tory party.

Whose MPs have reported women to their employers/the police for GC views or just retweeting JKR?

The Tory party.
What party are in power yet still refusing to safeguard women's rights?
The Tory Party.

As I said upthread, stop pissing on our heads and telling us it's raining.

Theresa May hasn’t been PM for some time. Self ID is not Tory policy, nor will it be.
which Tory MPs have reported people to their employers or police for supporting GC views or retweeting JKR? I can’t recall this, but my memory isn’t perfect.

Under Labour we’ll end up like NZ and Canada

I can’t see it any other way, and no one has said it won’t be.

I can only think some think it’s worth it.

So depressing

But Rishi Sunak could stop all this shit now? Why isn't he?

Because he doesn't give a shit about women and all that stuff "at least the Tories know what a woman is" was nothing more than a filthy lie from their filthy Tory faces. Some do, some don't, none give a fuck about women's rights.

Jamie Wallis is more important to them than the women of the UK.

Lack of intellectual heft? Liz Truss, Nadine Doris - actually given positions where they were allowed to make important decisions. I rest my case

I'm talking about The Labour front bench, but I suppose yeah race to the fucking bottom. The lack of intellects is so noticed because of its very absence on Labour's benches.

Every generation PM wants to leave their mark on social justice legislation, to be remembered as great liberating forces.

Blair brought in the GRA and repealed S28.
Cameron legislated for equal marriage.
May would have brought in Self ID.

Johnson, to his eternal credit, and for maybe the only time deciding on principle rather than narcissistic self advancement, chose not to extend gay conversion ban legislation to include trans.

Starmer will not push Self ID in a first term, buy you can bet your house he'll bring in a Trans Conversion Ban within months of winning, and likely Irish/Canadian style online anti-hate speech laws.

My fear is that Mordaunt will be the Tory opposition leader, and she'll back him to the hilt on this.

It's these two laws that would be the fertile ground for possible Self ID legislation in a second Labour term.

Can't deny any of this as a long term Tory voter.

I think most long term Tory voters have reached this stage Reality. Between now and the the next GE even more will cop on, be it because of Trans, housing, health, immigration, education, the economy or sleaze.

WhineyVaginey · 16/07/2023 22:12

The Tories in their rush to rebrand under hug a hoodie call me Dave, oversaw the worst destruction of women rights ever. You're right, they weren't looking because they don't give a fuck.
Once women started to scream the alarm - in some parts of the party they have listened, allowed debate.
All of this would have happened under Labour, the only difference being WE WOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT IT.

The cowardice amongst Labour MPs, the complete lack of intellectual heft (send me a 2brainsCook or a Dewar) & complete lack of simple curiosity & inability to HEAR women is fucking astounding!
