Labour canvasser today

I'm in one the constituencies with a by-election coming up.

Just had a labour canvasser (woman, mid/late fifties) knock to ask if I was voting. I said yes I would be.

She asked if I knew who I was voting for. I asked if she knew what a woman was. I told her I was a single issue voter and that was the only issue that was going to decide how I voted.

Her response: "I believe a woman is anyone who believes themself to be a woman".

I told her in that case I have nothing else to say to her, and closed the door.

I would have loved to have actually put some of the issues to her (rapists in prisons, assaults in mixed sex spaces, including schools, destruction of women's sports etc) but my heart was already racing and I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall anyway.

But anyway - at least that's a clear pile in the eye for the whole 'it doesn't come up on the doorstep' nonsense.

So, I'm either voting Tory or SDP.

You keep saying that.

So what are Labour going to do to put it right? Nothing. They're going to make it worse.

Analogy: I have two friends. One comes to my house & goes home with a £20 note which was on my kitchen worktop. I don't know if they picked it up accidentally or stole it, but when I mention it, they give it back & apologise. The other friend has never been to my house but they tell me that if & when they do visit me, they will steal everything they can lay their hands on. Which one am I more likely to invite into my house?

It’s pointless. They want the Tories to lose which means Labour will win.

They can’t answer anything beyond that as they know Labour will be worse on this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/07/2023 13:24

I'm not advocating that anyone vote Labour.

😂

We are here because of the Tory government.

We are going to have a lot more to worry about than sport and public toilets if the conservatives get back in. Single mums already are living in one room with children having to move schools and can't afford food. Food will be even more filled of additives making us sick. Paying for healthcare will take people's savings. Destruction of the environment and public transport.

Best idea is to join the Labour party so can discuss and impact

As far as I can gather, Labour has the same economic policies as the Tories? Without radical reform and investment, healthcare, the environment, public transport is likely to be the same regardless of whether the first or second eleven win the election.

SunnyEgg · 17/07/2023 12:03

I hope KJK prompts or someone actually asks direct questions to Starmer

And he answers

All this dancing around what is a woman in quotes from the left / Labour supporters doesn’t cut it.

Direct questions, on self Id and the rest. By god we need to move on from women have a penis or whatever we’re stuck at from the Labour / Lib Dem cronies.

Get them to spell out ramifications for women under their policies.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/07/2023 11:53

Anyway, to return to my original point, follow up your original query. Standing for the Tory party is no guarantee that your candidate "knows what a woman is". Indeed the fact the canvasser didn't know the candidate's view on this a bit suss in itself.

Fukuraptor · 17/07/2023 11:36

Rudderneck counterintuitively in the long term we're actually headed for depopulation. I know it seems odd to suggest that when we still haven't peaked but the increase in population is largely driven by people living longer not by birth rates which are falling worldwide. No country has successfully reversed this trend.

The fertility window is relatively short compared with our life spans and a growing number of people are unintentionally childless because they miss that window.

As for the politics questions I'm feeling discouraged, I am (or was, it may have lapsed) a Labour member/voter dismayed by the kinds of things front bench politicians have come out with on this issue. I think I'm going to make my decisions based on local candidates by challenging all parties on this issue.

Whoever gets in, I think we are going to have to keep working for this either within parties or outside them. There isn't an easy choice.

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 10:34

I would say too - I don't blame the Labour Party for being in a position where they aren't going to be able to do a lot differently economically. The economic environment doesn't have much to do with the party that happens to be in power, in most cases.

And I don't especially blame either party for the insane reactions to covid, I've come to see that as a manifestation of a population completely psychologically unprepared to deal with normal life events like the possibility of death.

But the situation now is going to be economically very difficult for some time. The whole model of the NHS may no longer be sustainable with a modern attitude to health, which is very different than what existed when most socialized health systems were set up. No party will have it easy and it is going to take some creative thinking and leadership to try and get through it.

I agree with your very sensible posts

I’d prefer the two dc cap not to be lifted anyway.

As much as Starmer is hopeless and hard to take the middle ground economic policies are fine by me and inevitable.

The ridiculous tapping in to politics of envy policies, ie VAT on private schools, and self ID gender overrunning party is where I have most issue.

We’ll be in the same position, if not worse, and will have thrown away our rights.

We may well be the last country wrangling on this with hope not to.

I think the implication that woman haven't been telling the LP what they want is fairly offensive.
Yes, offensive and tone deaf.

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 10:28

Is it just me, but given the population crises, and the costs and problems of using migrants to plug holes, wouldn't it maybe be sensible to NOT discourage people from having kids?

OT I know but it just seems weird to me. And frankly, not helping out children born in the UK while pushing the necessity, indeed obligation, of housing refugees who find their way to the UK seems a bit contradictory too.

This year's conference will give a good idea of where Labour is at regards this issue. The Labour Women's declaration has applied to have a stall again. Let's see what happens?

Yes I'll be watching very closely. In some ways I think that will give a better indication than their manifesto, which I expect will be wordsmithed and scrutinised to ensure it gives nothing away.

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 10:21

Floisme · 17/07/2023 08:00

I am surprised anyone believes dialogue with the Labour Party is a way forward given that they won't even talk to The Labour Women's Declaration in public. If that changes then I will reconsider - it will be one of my weathervanes as the election approaches.

I think the implication that woman haven't been telling the LP what they want is fairly offensive.

"Oh you silly girl, just tell them how you feel. That's how you make political gains."

As if women have not been trying to talk about this to the LP for years - they have been ignored, expelled from the party, told to vote Tory, called bigots and dinosaurs.

ResisterRex · 17/07/2023 10:14

Yvette Cooper has been on telly this morning saying no, they're not removing the two child cap. I imagine they see this as "middle ground" territory - which I think is a mistake. If that's not going with Labour or the Tories but Labour are going to press on with self-ID, it's them that's moved to the right! Madness.

RebelliousCow · 17/07/2023 09:54

Alongside the Labour party annual conference, there is another conference called 'The World Transformed'. It runs alongside but completely separate from the main Labour conference and it is attended by all of the main voices i Left/progressive politics. People such as Paul Mason, Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Jones.......They do not attend the main conference at all, just their own events and discussions.

The World Transformed represents the Momentum faction of the Labour Party - and it is no coincidence that the prefix trans is included - becaue it is full on LGBTQ+/drag queens/trans rights. Not a hint of women's single sex rights to be seen.

These people despise Kier Starmer, but they will vote Labour anyway - and it is they who influence the Labour party's policy on Self Id. People within the parliamentary party such as Nadia Whittome, Kim Johnson, Lloyd Moyle would attend 'The World Transformed' themselves if they did not value their position in the parliamentary party so much.

Unfortunately, not only have Labour been completely open about their intention to remove women's rights, they have also been clear they are keeping the same spending plans as the Tories. Apart from where they plan to reintroduce austerity cuts of course, eg Reeves has often spoken of her intention to crack down on benefits for disabled people and they've been lauding Osborne's disastrous and malicious policies. You might be better off joining the Tories and influencing them because Labour is a lost cause.

Like many posters on this thread, I have been a Labour Party member. They won't even talk to The Labour Women's Declaration.

SunnyEgg · 17/07/2023 09:18

If you think your political and career survival depends on an issue not coming up then you could stuff a room with banners, talk about it at the doorstep, send in emails it won’t work

Labour have their line - no one is talking about it. Whether they are or not, and people clearly are, and they’ll stick to it.

It’s working, the local elections confirmed that to them

We may be Terf island now, how much longer after the GE?

ResisterRex · 17/07/2023 08:52

Starmer can’t hear you in or out of his party.

He seems to refuse to listen to Duffield. I was surprised to see him sticking to the two child cap - an issue that detrimentally affects women - meanwhile he's not backtracked on self-ID but he is muttering about "building consensus" - an issue that positively affects males' ability to destroy our rights.

Oh wait, maybe I wasn't surprised about the cap.

Bigfatsquirrel · 17/07/2023 08:45

Look at Wales and their policies - they have been run by Labour for more than 20 years.

While you're at it look at the state of their NHS and education. Of course Welsh Gov complain it's lack of funding from Westminster but they get get £1.20 for every £1 spent in England.

That's the blueprint for Labour in power and they cannot be trusted on this issue

SunnyEgg · 17/07/2023 08:40

Rudderneck · 17/07/2023 01:53

Yes, you were convinced she would win the last leadership contest hands down, and were wanting about the disastrous implications all over MN, I don't think your political nous is all that trustworthy on this topic.

Yes to this

Where is Labour getting funds from?

Joining Labour party will do nothing, other than validate by boosting membership numbers.

Starmer can’t hear you in or out of his party.
