I have a link to a study done on males treated with PBs. Indications are they have a tendency to grow taller than their expected heights if they had male puberty. I will have to post it tomorrow as I am on my phone. (But it is in the Break it down thread )

Emily was still doing pretty well competing against males until fairly recently. They might not have been in the running for Olympic gold, but might still have been able to have a cycling career.

I'm also not convinced that having taken puberty blockers will prevent males from making an impact on women's sports. Are the impacts on males as severe? (most of what you read applies to woman) A study also showed that males on PBs were as tall as those who hadn't taken them. Height/size can confer a massive advantage. They are just kicking the problem down the road, as someone else commented.

Height is limited by puberty, when the long bones fuse. No puberty, no epiphyseal closure or growth plate fusion.

But, of course, puberty blockers are entirely reversible? FFS! I know this is a lie and I'm not a doctor - what are the clinicians prescribing them thinking is going to happen? Oh, trans euphoria - my bad.

Florissante · 14/07/2023 21:22

Too bad, Bridges.

About time the UCI recognised biological reality - but better late than never, and very welcome news. Heard it on BBC R4, but can't see it on the website yet.

agent765 · 14/07/2023 19:43

Yep. My heart breaks. For the WOMEN AND GIRLS that are pushed out and/or made to feel uncomfortable doing the things THEY love by male cheats.

Sandy was very invested in her young daughters proto modelling career, punting her all over social media at a young age. That didn’t come to fruition. I’ve heard rumours of subsequent ED but who knows the truth.
She then became very very invested in her son’s cycling career.

The narc meltdown on Twitter suggests she lives vicarious through her kids lives. That’s not a healthy place for anyone.

Ah. Didn't know that but not surprised. Her poor kids, forever trying to be extraordinary to please mummy. I'm reminded of Susie Green entering Jackie into modelling competitions as a teenager.

BaronMunchausen · 14/07/2023 19:30

... they also refer to "female" athletes where they mean male.

So gender is sex and all words are redefined.

BaronMunchausen · 14/07/2023 19:26

UCI supports the right of all individuals to "choose the sex that corresponds to their gender identity". Which is bizarre.

Even if you could somehow choose your sex, why should it correspond to your "gender identity"? Or has the Ideology now dispensed with the distinction between sex and gender?

I suspect the story here is that Sandy was massively caught up in Emily becoming an Olympic star. When Emily went by a boy's name, Emily's star was in the ascendant and then had a couple of accident and was eventually dropped from the national team.

Emily began their transition journey shortly after that. According to Emily, they had wanted to transition for ages but didn't want to scupper their cycling career. While I have no wish to deny Emily's truth, I think it will be very interesting to see what Emily does next.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think males can compete in the female competition if they have taken puberty blockers and have not undergone male puberty.

These chappies (or girlies depending on your sleight of hand willingness) still don't have a female body, with all that entails. It's still not like against like.

Way better than before, but a female is not any version of a male. And, if it is to be protected, it should be a positive definition. Not simply male not gone through puberty and not testosterone level dependent

I agree, though without knowing how to analyse the effects on sports: a five year old boy’s body is already very different from a little girl’s the same age.

Emily's mummy is very pro Just Stop Oil. I wouldn't be surprised if she wrote a lot of that mad rant. She is very bound up in Emily's career. Funny how all these TRAs have mothers who are way too enmeshed in their sons' lives.

Sandy is now trying to badger UCI sponsors from withdrawing their sponsorship.

I know you read here Sandy so just to make it clear: no one is stopping Emily cycling. Emily just can't compete against women.

I see, thanks @Clymene

and by the way, Em is a very lucky person in so many ways, according to newspapers went to an expensive school, then a very good university, there are many great careers open to Em that aren't open to most people - in terms of top level cycling as a career, that ship sailed three years ago when Em was cut from the elite men's squad, not today or when British Cycling announced its policy.

Well, that probably part of the problem. If you go through life in a gilded, padded bubble with every bump in the road ironed out and every door opened for you, it’s going to come as an awful shock when one day you find yourself up against a hard stop of “NO”.

Signalbox · 14/07/2023 17:40

So will this prevent Austin Killips from running off with any more women's prize money? Or is he competing under a different set of regulations? Also will it stop men competing in the women's Olympic events?

Hmmm, I sort of agree although given most companies do social media searches these days I'm struggling to think of many employers that would hire someone who's known for unhinged rants demonstrating a dubious grasp of reality and a persecution complex.

Four page rant from Emily Bridges in 5…4…3…oh, it’s already here:

I really just want to type…. But Emily…. you can still compete, you can compete with the men as you always have.

The hyperbole in this has reached alarming proportions. The suicide narrative is so very irresponsible.

All because women in cycling said ‘no!’ And finally the UCI listened. I am quite sure the flurry of what was it? something like 50 places in events in the world this season were taken by male riders in female events. And look at the new records!!!!

The UCI finally realised it had fucked up and while I am glad, I am angry that those women lost out this year. That included prize money.

The irony of blaming it on the money involved in sporting when trans* is really all about making money for med/tech.

*not including those genuine people who struggle with their own body

Bridges' Instagram statement is deranged.

And what is the connection with climate policy?

Given that Bridges’ last Instagram diatribe included reference to Tory immigration policy (IIRC) and genocide, expecting any sort of basis in reality for this word salad would be…optimistic?

Is that right, Sandy reads posts on here? My advice to her would be very simple... having your child's back, unconditionally, is not the same as always telling them that they're in the right. There are many times when a good parent has to, not always gently, for their own good try to steer their offspring onto a slightly different course. Just the simple fact that Em is the thick end of a foot taller than the genetically very similar Sandy tells its own story - men and women aren't the same physically, sporting sex categories make sense and are worth defending with no exceptions.

Helleofabore · 14/07/2023 17:20

It is all still such poor reporting. I think the reporter has no idea!!

”The UCI has followed athletics in preventing transgender women competing if they went through male puberty.”

“Transgender women will be banned from all cycling events under new rules that come into force on Monday, cycling’s world governing body (UCI) has announced.”

no. Just female events.
