Shaw, 28, replied to a news article post about Cherry with the comment “STG [swear to God] I am gonna pop Joanna Cherry” at 5.23pm on January 22 last year, Edinburgh sheriff court was told.'

I don't like the term "cis".
If additional words are ever necessary to further define a woman, then "actual" or "real" would be much more appropriate. IMO.

But additional words shouldn’t be necessary! Actual woman…real woman…The word “woman” suffices, every time.

You seem to be aware here that one or some women can't consent to a man/ men entering women's single sex spaces on behalf of all women.

You are so close, just the last few dot to join.

But the game will end if those last few dots are ever connected!

Doubt as to guilt - is that a technical issue about whether Eve/Adam actually sent the message?

Haven't read the judgment, but it's likely to be doubt about intention. To convict the prosecution needed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intention to commit the offence.

I think the fact that 'pop' has so many different meanings that whilst if read in conjunction with other tweets (not saying that's the case here but I'd assume someone from JC side took a deeper look at the guys tweets as a whole to determine risk level) you could be pretty sure the tweeter meant one thing yet if it was just looked at in isolation then it's just to ambiguous and gives the accused (and the sheriff) a lot more wiggle room to say that's not how it was meant.

I think the argument goes that she was standing around in a public place voicing the belief in equality for women. So she asked for it. Or something.

Hello Gilead, how did you get here?

Quite. People who think we couldn't go the way of Afghanistan or Iran aren't paying attention.

So if GL, a man, is going around women's bathrooms looking for transwomen to drag out, who is going to drag GL out?

Or has GL received authorisation from every woman to be the women's toilets police?

"ok, another question is how can you tell?"
LOL!
According to an article in the press this week (was it the Telegraph?) - we can smell them!

I hope JC appeals against this decision.

Probably no grounds for appeal. Appeals are for where the judge got the law wrong. The law seems pretty straightforward here. The argument was over the issue of fact - what was intended by the message - and there's no right to appeal findings of fact.

Yes, his defence seemed to be that he didn't mean by 'pop' Cherry that he'd shoot her, but that he'd sexually assault her.

It's not like rape threats are fine but murder threats aren't. I'm not sure what the judge meant by '“This was a very unwise message that no doubt caused a great deal of concern.“But I have some doubt, reasonable doubt, as to your guilt in the matter so you are therefore acquitted and I find you not guilty.”

Doubt as to guilt - is that a technical issue about whether Eve/Adam actually sent the message?

I get way too much use out of this meme.

Sad but true 😢

Goodness - derailing a discussion about threats of violence against a woman politician. Desperate times eh?

Threatening violence against women appears to be a feature at the moment - eg Barker and the support he got from that crowd. No wonder women don't want to share spaces with them.

MerlinsLostMarbles · 12/07/2023 15:03

If I may ask, if you were using a woman's facility and a transwoman was there doing their own thing, would you be happy with a cis-man to then enter to cause a physical altercation with the transwoman?

(I know "cis" isn't a well-liked term here, but just to differentiate between trans and not-trans)

To put it another way, should there be designated "toilet police"?

Nobody wants toilet police. How about trans women just show a basic respect for women and stay out of female toilets as we have requested repeatedly? That's a much simpler solution than toilet police.
But it seems that simply respecting women's privacy is somehow far too complicated 🙄

Boomboom22 · 12/07/2023 16:19

Can she appeal? Why are tw a sacred caste for the judiciary.

If he started trouble with Izzard I know who my money would be on.

Me too and it's not Mr Izzard.

Not in those heels.

LarkLane · 12/07/2023 16:18

I thought the thread was about Shaw's threat to "pop" Joanna Cherry? What a stretch to bring irrelevant, theoretical toilet scenarios into it. Pathetic derail attempt.
Back on topic.

I interpreted that this person was going to do me violence. ‘Pop’ refers to a gun shot or taking a pop at someone. I have to take these things seriously as two members of parliament have been murdered since I became an MP. Joanna Cherry.

Rosie Cooper, then MP, was also nearly murdered. This Sherrif has given a green light to use terms like " pop", "wack" and so on, to threaten people, particularly women. What a piss-poor, ill considered, explanation for his decision.

Boomboom22 · 12/07/2023 16:17

Sorry more likely than other men. Of course women are highly unlikely to assault but tw are men.

Boomboom22 · 12/07/2023 16:17

I'd be happier with gl in the womams toilets than a tw act7ally. The stats show tw are more likely to sexually assault than men so 🤷

ArabeIIaScott · 12/07/2023 15:46

By 'examine' you mean 'look at', Merlin?

Yes, interesting use of “examine”. Sounds very medical. We don’t “examine” people - we “look at” them or perhaps “scrutinise” if we’re looking closely.

And we know instantly if we’re looking at a man or a woman, @MerlinsLostMarbles, and it has nothing to do with whether the person is wearing makeup or not.

RebelliousCow · 12/07/2023 16:06

can I ask what is the protocol for people repeatedly using the term 'cis' - when requested not to? Can it be reported? I don't normally resort to such measures - but just feel this is an ongoing trolling like behaviour: an act of wilful provocation.

It seems to depend on who the moderator is and also whether they decide the poster is using it legitimately or as a slur or to wind people up.

Mumsnet do say they don't ban words as such but will judge each post on its own merits, but only if they are made aware of them by people reporting.

PatatiPatatras · 12/07/2023 16:12

Lol at this thread As long as the judgement applies to everyone joking to like minded peers on twitter then we should all just joke to pop all those we disagree with! Problem absolutely solved! 💯 . Fecking awesome!

ok, another question is how can you tell? Do you examine every other woman in the toilets to try to tell if they are trans or not?

The men are the ones making threats to punch, pop, and rape women. HTH.

I've observing your presence on the form for a while now and it appears you are just here to excuse appaling behaviour and conduct, threats and intimidation, sexual abuse and assault - so long as it happens only to women, and only when perpetrated by males purporting to be women.

Pure whataboutism'

You don't nee dto use the word 'cis' you can use the words woman and transwoman - that would be more accurate, and not so needlessly provocative.

Beowulfa · 12/07/2023 15:56

I'm sure readers can look at the face and attitude of the "woman" and draw their own conclusions.
