I've tried very hard to understand the "TERFs gatekeep femininity" argument and the only way I can make heads or tails of it is that they think our problems are with ahh, the lack of passing shall we say (trying not to get deleted here).

The so-called terf position is very much misunderstood. I think some people confuse the GC of gender-critical for gender-conforming. No, we don’t want to put people in boxes and affix pink or blue labels to them. No, we don’t centre men or the male gaze when we talk about women and women’s rights. Womanhood does not include men. It’s not gatekeeping. If a man can be a woman, then the word woman cannot be defined. It’s meaningless. Why would a man want to identify as something that doesn’t actually exist? Define patriarchy in a nutshell? It’s men ruling the roost. Pushy, aggressive males demanding that their needs take priority over women, who must serve as emotional support humans, budge up, and above all, be kind.

Womanhood is not a feeling, it’s a biological reality that cannot be identified into or out of. Feminine qualities, dress or stereotypes can be adopted by anyone regardless of their biological reality. So, men can wear makeup and heels if they wish to present in a stereotypical feminine way. Doesn’t make them women - and never will.

I long for the day that transwomen say “I’m a transwoman” instead of “I’m a woman”. Recognise that they are free to live their lives how they please, while respecting they are different to natal women. They could become allies to women, and we could be their allies too. TW with dysphoria have their own difficulties to deal with. These are not the same battles women face as a result of their sex-based reality.

That feels as if it ought to be relevant to the current debate.
