A post promoting Lucy Spraggan's book appeared in my Facebook feed and I found it really interesting that she chose to post the following:

There’s a chapter in my book called ‘When I Was a Little Boy’ which talks about, well, when I was a little boy.
I was born biologically female but from a young age I chose to be called Max and lived - completely authentically - as a boy.
I talk about in all the ways that my family nurtured my identity and in all the ways that freedom to be myself, freedom to be Max, helped me to grow.
It was only recently that I discovered how much Max is still a part of me and I talk about that too.
Anyway, I wanted you to meet Max. So here’s some pics of me then

I wonder whether she will go all out and say she is glad, as a happy adult lesbian, that her family let her just work it all out for herself.

One of the comments:

'I love this. However, in todays society, Lucy’s parents would have been encouraged to give her hormones and other drugs to change her body from female to male which DOES have irreparable side effects. I agree with allowing children to be who they feel comfortable being, I don’t agree with giving them drugs and medication to make a life changing decision that they just aren’t equipped to make at such a young age. I too was “all boy” when I was younger but thank god I wasn’t given the opportunity to change my gender, I love being a woman and back then I had no concept of what being a man OR woman meant in the world. I just wanted to play football, and only boys were allowed to do that. Hence why I cut my hair short and tried to pass myself off as a boy for years as a kid. I had no concept though of what I was doing. Nature took its course and thank god it did, I love being a woman and I love all my womanly parts. Children need to be supported in whatever they want to do, but making life changing decisions is something they should decide as an adult.'

Oooo it's another redefined word!

"Entitlement"

Old meaning - a belief one is entitled to certain material or social advantages (a) not because of what one has done to deserve them but simply because of who one is, or (b) through a misguided belief that one has done more to deserve them then others, when the reality is that one is simply unaware of why others have at least the same claim

New meaning - the outrageous belief one can ever have an opinion about whether something someone wants to do is a good or bad idea

Entitled to me is expecting something that isnt yours.

You said:
This is akin to the death threats and abuse given to the callers at mermaids.

These death threats and abuse are nothing to do with me or the other women posting here. What do you think is 'akin to the death threats and abuse'? Disagreeing with you is neither a death threat nor abuse.

I'm not directing any anger at Lucy. I think she is misguided in giving money to a controversial charity. That's all.

'Entitlement of what you think other people should do' is an interesting phrase. I have an opinion. That's all. That's not 'entitlement'.

Sorry, I genuinely see how I didnt write that well. I am not for one second saying anyone on here does that. What I meant want was -
Criticising Lucy is the same as being horrendous to mermaids staff.
Neither ot them achieve anything and its misplaced. .
Not si much you, OC but I do think other posts earlier today ahout being disappointed in Lucy bla bla is entitled behaviour. She doesnt owe anyone anything.

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 18:14

You're unaware that mermaids staff receive death threats and abuse?

I meant your anger at medical transition and entitlement of what you think other people should do is being aimed at Lucy. She isnt transitioning children.

If Mermaids didn't exist, fewer children would be medically transitioned. Giving them money helps them to exist.

Death threats and abuse? What?

Anger and entitlement? What are you on about? You're not making much sense at the moment.

MavisMcMinty · 21/07/2023 17:28

Mermaids is currently being investigated by the Charity Commission, so I look forward to reading the outcome of that. What with the Cass Review and Hannah Barnes’ book Time to Think, the medical/social “transitioning” of children is under a lot of scrutiny at the moment.

OldCrone · 21/07/2023 17:12

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 16:39

@OldCrone how many young people do you think will rush out to he medically transitioned because a singer who they dont know gave some money to a charity? Seriously?

This is akin to the death threats and abuse given to the callers at mermaids.

Your anger and entitlement is going to the wrong people.

This is the first time I’ve heard of Lucy or ‘her troubles’ as you describe them.

I’m the mother of a child harmed by Mermaids so who donates money to them is always of interest, especially when that person’s own gender Dysphoria resolved naturally, in a way that is denied to many children today.

I sympathise with you and your child, Nic. You have every right to make your point about Mermaids anywhere you can. You owe nothing to the people who harmed your child and other children.

If anyone owes anything, I’d say all of us who grew up in safety owe today’s and tomorrow’s children our efforts to protect them.

FiloPasty · 17/07/2023 08:48

I was just reading the guardian story about her awful sexual assault and she has donated her fee to mermaids

Sad and strange. Her parents accepted her as she was, and let her grow up normally, but Mermaids encourages children onto drugs, surgery and lifelong medicalisation.

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 16:39

NicCageisnotNickCave · 21/07/2023 16:38

Of course she doesn’t ‘owe’ anything.

But we can discuss her peculiarly poor judgement. That’s what discussion forums are all about.

You can but by yout own admission you might want to actually research her first.

For what it's worth, and I mean this, even though we will not agree, I'm sorry to hear that.

As you say, Lucy wasnt known to you. She doesnt owe you anything.

Incidentally nobody can say its resolved. She just hasnt transitioned. Two different things.

You're missing the point. Lucy's troubles have been well documented and not just the recent ones.
There is a time and a place for making your point about Mermaids and this just isnt it (again, OP didnt know that when she made the thread).
Your opinions do not trump other peoples.

OldCrone · 21/07/2023 16:32

Yes, she likes mermaids. Shes allowed to. Doesnr mean she endorses anything.

Why would you donate to a charity unless you agreed with what they were doing? The donation is the endorsement.

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 16:27

OldCrone · 21/07/2023 16:23

You know what I mean you were here when it happened.

Is this the idea that if someone has had a traumatic experience that they cannot be judged on anything for the rest of their life?

Calling gender ideology bullshit is just offensive.

Gender ideology is offensive.

I donate to dogs charity, doesnt mean I want to be a dog.

If you donate to a dogs charity, it suggests to me that you think that charity does good work and it would be reasonable to assume that you like dogs.

If you donate to Mermaids it suggest to me that you agree with their aims and that you believe that transing children is a positive thing. If you also say that you lived as the opposite sex as a child and that you wish you'd been transed as a child, that reinforces the impression that you are in favour of transing children. Why do you think this is separate from what Lucy wrote in her book?

I don't know why you find it surprising that anyone is against gender ideology/stereotyping on a feminist board.

Because feminist board or not which seems to be played like a fallible power play card, I thought people respected others views.

You can say you disagree with it but to call it bullshit is unnecessary. I think a lot of 'feminist' views are wrong but I would never call them bullshit.

Youvr made a completely false connection. Lucy wishes shed been transitioned. That doesnt mean she wants that for other people. Shes talking about herself, as shes allowed to do. Nowhere has she ever endorsed it at all.

Yes, she likes mermaids. Shes allowed to. Doesnr mean she endorses anything.

As for the point about the opinions, I'm not getting into that again. I've made my viewpoint clear. Criticising someone for what charity they donated to off the back of talki g about her sexual assault was vile. You can debate it as much as you like, I stand by that.

OldCrone · 21/07/2023 16:23

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 16:05

You know what I mean you were here when it happened.

I'm disappointed OC as witn our opposing views I thought your previous posts were thought provoking. Calling gender ideology bullshit is just offensive.

'Suggests' that's very different to her endorsing and or telling children to do things.

I donate to dogs charity, doesnt mean I want to be a dog.

Lucy's choice to donate to mermaids )and I'm annoyed we are back on this again) is separate to her writing about her own experiences in her book.

The irony is this started because people thought Lucy was speaking out against transition. Now it appears she wasnt, people are forced to make things up.

As for your comment about the boards, that's just childish. You might be a strong collective, but your opinions are no more valid than anyone elses.

I like that. A name change might be in order just for you

WildUnchartedWaters · 21/07/2023 16:05

she hasnt told anyone to do that

Donating to Mermaids and saying that she wishes she could have been transed as a child suggests that she thinks transing children is a positive thing.

Weve already had someone suggesting that being a victim of what she has shouldnt relieve her from being judgement, it was disgusting then and it's disgusting now

Can you explain what you mean by this?

you called gender ideology bullshit

Which it is. In case you hadn't noticed, this is the feminism board. We don't have a lot of time for regressive gender stereotyping here.

absolutely @OldCrone and whatever has happened in her life does not alter that one jot

  1. she hasnt told anyone to do that
  2. Weve already had someone suggesting that being a victim of what she has shouldnt relieve her from being judgement, it was disgusting then and it's disgusting now
  3. you have no right to be disheartened, she owes you nothing and doesnt answer to you
  4. you called gender ideology bullshit which means your opinions cant be taken seriously anyway
  5. you're wrong about far more than just Lucy, you're just too entitled to see it.
