What a great episode. Helen Joyce is so fantastic. So clear, so calm, so righteous.

And while I stopped watching Megyn as I disagree with a lot of her other views and people she chooses to platform, I really really do enjoy her rage on this subject. You can hear her scoff when they're playing the Rachel Levine clip ha ha. Wish Megyn would have replied when Helen pointed out the American political polarization though, she just went mm and changed the subject...

Mycenaean · 20/07/2023 19:03

It’s the stopped watch thing, sometimes it tells the right time, but you wouldn’t want to rely on it to catch the right train.

What would you want to rely on it for?

funnelfan · 05/07/2023 14:12

What is with all these «left» posters completely dehumanising others for not being left wing?

turning this around, knowing that grass roots feminism has been, for many years, associated with the political left, then a tactic to shut them up might involve them someone that believing/saying X makes them right wing. Divide and conquer and all of that.

DARVO.

Does the MRA (male supremacist) movement remotely resemble anything you've ever seen on the 'progressive' left?

Me, neither.

But it does show some marked similarities with the (censorious, sexist, homophobic) old right.

The left/right distinction barely exists in any meaningful sense anymore - it's just lazy ideological compartmentalization. To accept or reject ideas based on what area of the political spectrum they happen to come from is a shortcut to actually thinking.

This smearing of feminism with the alt right accusation isn't new. It's been a concerted effort for some time. Along with a more recent one determinedly associating FWR with white supremacism. Coincidence?

I've done some searching around Megyn Kelly, including videos of her alleged racism. I'd never heard of her before. She sounds a horror. I don't for one minute stand with those views, nor with the covert homophobia she demonstrated in the opening minutes of that footage. (I saw the whole thing. I will not be told what I can and cannot watch).

I hold views that are certainly GC - doesn't mean I 'align' with or share the views of every other GC person. I admire KJK's courage in the face of bullying and intimidation; I strongly disagree with some of her assertions. Megyn Kelly's white supremacism and misogynistic views I find nothing short of disgusting - to the point that I question her motivation in standing for women's rights as eloquently as she does in this video when she's made numerous anti-women points I find nothing short of thoroughly offensive. (Likewise Maureen Lipman and Jilly Cooper, who told women off for making a lot of fuss about nothing surrounding #MeToo. That noise can get to fuck.

Nonetheless, she's articulate and persuasive and I agree with most of what she has to say on this footage. It's an infantile, no-shades-of-grey lookout that it's mandatory to agree with every word someone says or none, and if they once utter a questionable comment, it's necessary to dismiss them on every other basis. A four-year-old child can reason this out.

But that's the strategy. The utter lack of nuance that's sprung up with the MRA/TRAs is interesting. They can't all be stupid - I know a good number who are highly intelligent - yet they can't argue a coherent case. 280 characters per tweet doesn't allow for much detail or variation: it's also an effective means of closing down (inconvenient) debate.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/07/2023 09:10

I'm glad Megyn Kelly is being scrutinised for her wider opinions. Now, for the TRAs on this thread revelling in a chance to burn a witch while shaming women into (im)purity politics, do the same for your own side and let's see what your moral position really is.

But poor Sarah was only expressing the community's anger 'hypothetically'.

Oh thanks, that was an amazing interview! Nearly two hours long but I could listen to Helen Joyce all day and all night. I had just decided I MUST go to bed when I saw your post and clicked play… now it’s 06.30 and I’m finally in bed. Well worth a watch.

I've watched it now, it's long but I found myself engaged enough to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. I've never been a fan of Megyn Kelly's and I never would have guessed she'd be the one to take this up, good for her!

Helleofabore · 20/07/2023 13:33

nauticant · 20/07/2023 08:14

I've not watched the interview but before I do can anyone tell me if by the end Helen Joyce has been brainwashed into being a racist and a white supremacist?

I think she passed the litmus test. Phew!

So, I listened as well... I am now looking forward to posters who come and tell us what it is that Megyn Kelly has said, in this video, and specifically in this video, that they disagree with.

Oh...no.... have I been brainwashed and influenced? Please wims keep checking on me for the next months to make sure. One can't be too careful.

turbonerd · 20/07/2023 13:28

Thanks for posting.

No, @nauticant . Helen Joyce sounds like a person concerned with human’s rights. Concerned with children’s rights to actually develop naturally into human adults.
Basic stuff, I would say.

This is a classic example of what I mentioned recently in site stuff (and got roundly attacked for): people pushing right wing/white supremacist ideology onto us and trying to make us like far right wingers on the grounds that they "know what a woman is".

Megyn Kelly has repeatedly made racist and white supremacist comments (her show in America actually got cancelled over her doing a segment in support of blackface); she regularly speaks out against what she considers the wave of Muslim immigrants in Europe while also claiming to be pro-immigration in the US; she approved an on-air caption referring to Michelle Obama as "Obama's babymomma" and got angry when staffers complained that it was racist and overruled it; she' been accused of racism and creating a culture of systemic racism by her own staffers; dismissed and victim-blamed black victims of police brutality and black people murdered by police; she's referred to African-American culture as "thug-like" and claimed that Michelle Obama leads African American people in "playing the victim"; said that black people murdered by police are to blame for their own murder because they should have just been compliant and not argued (when some black people have been murdered by police while asleep in their own beds, and since when do we give people the death penalty for being argumentative?); said that leaked racist emails from police forces aren't a big deal because "you won't find many companies in America without racist emails", and she's publicly praised and supported Trump while leaked private conversations show that she's anti-Trump.

Of course this is Mumsnet and the threads about black people being murdered by police or black people being hunted down and lynched by thugs are full of comments implying they deserved it and comments trashing the victims (the George Floyd threads and Ahmaud Arbery threads here were disgusting), I bet there are plenty of posters who will howl in outrage at the suggestion that referring to Michelle Obama as "babymomma" isn't racist, who will defend blackface, who will agree with her that Muslims are infesting Europe, because it happens every single time anything to do with race is mentioned.

She's on record as saying that she's not a feminist, she doesn't believe in things like gender quotas or affirmative action requiring companies to hire women, she's mocked the idea of universities have policies on sexual consent and gone on record as saying that student sexual consent policies are "anti-men", she's said she thinks conversation around the idea that there's a gender pay gap are "infantilising", and her book defends sexism as being generational while speaking out against sexism that she personally has experienced.

Oh and she said that people can be turned gay by watching Will and Grace.

Someone in site stuff said (paraphrased) "you must think the women of Mumsnet are not very intelligent if they can't see that people are exploiting GC feminism to try to coerce women into far right" - guess this thread is our chance to find out!

Stop pushing right wing ideology on the grounds that racists hate trans people so that means they're okay and we should listen to them.

Can you really, seriously not understand that agreeing with someone that genderism is harmful (or that humans cannot change sex) does not make me agree with all or any of their other opinions? It does not make me support their overall politics or their activities. It does not make me take any action in their favour.

It simply means we agree on one thing. And when that one thing is blindingly obvious, probably most of the world agrees.

thanks to epople who have posted links already - really appreciated. and to the comments that are helpful.
I think it's something when as backstreets said, to post outside the feminism board is brave.

HOW did it get to this?

No political affiliation should have a monopoly on the safeguarding of children. In a civilised society, we should all strive for this.

Thank you backstreets, I agree with this.

here is the link - helps if I post it! please listen - and as I said, ignore the nat con signs - they have nothing to do with the content of her report which does not mention politics at all - but doe mention, clearly, the harm of medicalisation. I will be looking for non political videos, as obviously politics is a fabulous misdirection. Im hoping to find ‘introduction’ videos that I can post on regular boards., that can explain without sounding insane- as this stuff does when you first come across it. If anyone has any favorites, please let me know. thank you!

A very clear explanation from dr grossman.

I ask you to ignore the Nat Con signs - they are not relevant to what she is saying, which doesn’t mention politics, and is purely about the medicalisation of children, and listen.

lets debate the content of her report.

OP posts:
Moomoola · 06/07/2023 10:51

Hi Alison. I posted it on AIBU to try and get traffic for mums, to create some awareness of what is happening to their children.
mumsnet moved it to the feminist board, but I don’t think it’s a feminist issue. I think it’s an issue that ALL parents need to be aware of.
Unless you are directly affected, you very possibly will think - as I did- that this is another fad.
there are some teens for who it is a fad.
There are others who are sucked in and buying testosterone ( steroids) online, from a well known chain for 18 quid a week, no questions, no safeguarding.
thankyou.

This was posted on feminism chat, not on one of the parenting threads

Nope.

Moomoola · 06/07/2023 09:15

Hello everyone. Thanks for the comments. I don’t want to get involved in left or right, this , in my opinion is beyond left or right or blaming or arguing.
I posted on AIBU because I had hoped to bring more parents some awareness of what is going on with their children.
while we are all arguing and being right or left or don’t like megyn’s background,
our kids are being encouraged to think they are born in the wrong body and only massive doses of untested hormones and surgery can help.
Am I living in a sci if film? We need to tackle this issue. We can argue left and right and blame later.
My daughter has been peruseded to go non contact with us, her parents, to live with her partner and her parents.
These parents have given their child puberty blockers and testosterone. Now at 18 she has massive shoulders, soft skin, beautiful eyes, delicate feet and a beard. People stare, obviously - she has a feminine aura even if she has blue hair and an army jacket. she is self conscious and believes that the heterosexual world is out to get her and always has been against trans people.
That’s massive. Her mum drinks too much, everyone is angry and miserable, blaming everyone else for their misery and seeing themselves as a victim.
And my daughter thinks that’s ok.
My daughter was socially affirmed at the school by a well meaning teacher who thought he was doing what the guidelines recommended. Her mental health suffered hugely and the school referred her to the LGBT counselor.
She looked at the girls and thought she could only be false eyelash straight hair girl which she didn’t feel she could achieve. - just look at tik toks by schoolgirls. There is a LOT of pressure.
So she thought the only alternative was to be a trans person. There was no shades of grey, the teacher assured me it was a fashion - like goth or punk.
But it’s not is it?
She could have worn DMs and been an art student, but directed by responsible adults, she is now mentally in a massively difficult place ( I believe - she has cut us off) and is now taking testosterone because she hates her female form.
Please stop arguing about what is left and what is right, because the chances of this happening to your child, or a child you know is increasing rapidly.

There are 48.5, thousand kids on just one detrans subreddit. Their stories are horrific. We need to make more mums - all mums-aware, that this starts with pronouns.

Genspect can say all this much better than I can.

thank you.

But why do you need to post your personal dislike of someone on a thread by a mother with a troubled child who is promoting something she believes will help other parents?

You are talking over this mother as if your personal preference of highly paid tv presenters should take precedence over this mother in a difficult situation who is seeking to help other parents in similarly difficult situations.

This is mumsnet, a parenting board and that dimension was the point of the thread, not a thread about who you like to watch or won't watch on American TV.

?? This was posted on feminism chat, not on one of the parenting threads. Also, MN is far more than a parenting board. And as this thread is posted on feminism, i think one should be free to express doubt in the sincerity of a woman such as kelly, who stated in an interview that feminists are 100% anti-republican (conservative), and also anti-men, and who applauded the scotus for overturning abortion rights. Interview, with clickable link:

For me it’s a no-brainer. I’m definitely not a feminist because I think feminists, that term right now, has become associated with a few different things that I don’t want anything to do with. Feminists of today are 100% anti-Republican, anti-conservative. They can’t stand conservative women.

I think they’re anti-men. Their rhetoric on trying to empower women, too often for me, does so by denigrating men. That’s not the way forward. That’s not the way to empower hearts, minds and I don’t agree with it.

However, I do understand your concern re. the OP’s message being obscured. I have expressed my opinion (probably ad nauseam for those who disagree) and will remove myself from this thread.

Rheia1983 · 05/07/2023 16:31

For me, the smearing from some on the left of those on the right has become so normalized that I actively read/watch what the so-called nazis, nazi-adjacent right-wing people are saying in order to make up my own mind. Seeing that even J. K. Rowling was smeared as a bigot/transphobe/horrible person by so many on the left, I am now wary of taking anything the left says on face value even though my own politics are left of center.

I also find it patronizing when other people tell me who I should or should not listen to. Therefore, I suppose it's a bit of an own goal of the the left that their antics now actively make me read/watch content of those on the right, whereas before I did not question the integrity and honesty of those on the left.

As for Megyn Kelly's position on pronouns, I agree with her on this point. It's a pity there are not many on the left who are willing to push back against gender ideology in the same way.

I am left-wing and have not noticed a LW slant on Mumsnet. Just have a look at threads about Brexit, Labour, Conservatives, sometimes it feels like walking through Daily Mail Land.

I was thinking mainly outside MN, and the collectives of the 70s and 80s like the various groups of the women’s liberation movement, Greenham common etc.

I picked that hepwo. Thanks for clarifying though.

I doubt that @comeatmeallyouwant or cocoloco will be back to read it though. I suspect they were drive by scoldings with the ridiculous notion of presenting a parody of what a feminist thinks.

I answered before I started to look up the names of the shamers because they were not familiar as regular feminist posters. I am tired and didn’t make the connection at first. I was rather horrified that ‘actual feminists’ would be so narrow minded as to not even view original source material before shaming others with such crap as these guilt by association fallacies.

I am sure you are aware of such groups who use that tactic to silence feminists hepwo, if you know what I mean. This really was like a replay from both earlier this year and mid last year - it is like a slightly tweaked deja vu….

Helleofabore · 05/07/2023 09:44

”There's plenty of other women that make intelligent, informed and powerful statements in support of women's sex based rights, many of them in fact on the MN feminism board. You are NOT doing gender critical women any favours coming out to loudly bat for right wing homophobes and racists, and FOX NEWS FFS. You're sadly doing the GC movement real harm and it's a shame some of you are too blinkered to even realise.”

Have you even read what I have posted? Can you tell me where telling someone to stop shaming women for listening or reading a wide range of media is me “coming out to loudly bat”?

Can you tell me why watching and reading media to simply understand what others are saying is ”doing the GC movement real harm”? I am constantly surprised by such censure because it is the opposite to what I recommend to posters who come to FWR. To read widely, go to original sources and make decisions from there.

I am not not ashamed. But you carry on doing things your way and I will continue to read, to fact check, to post original source material and to seek to find the truth.

You're sadly doing the GC movement real harm and it's a shame some of you are too blinkered to even realise.”

By now it's obvious to anyone not blinkered that the only "harm" emanates from the ridiculous fringe people doing the whole right wing adjacent Nazi name calling thing in the Greens and Lib Dems and Labour crazies. Or Twitter bores.

If they are continuing to shout Nazis at you and that bothers you then I really hope you recover soon!

I don't think we have to worry about Conservative lawmakers who are also on the receiving end of the ridiculous fringe's Nazi name calling nonsense!

If you are worried that Labour believes the Nazi name calling and that's harmful, well, there is sometimes nothing you can do about the bubble the left lives in.

Not directed at you Hellebore, the poster isn't reading so I was just adding to your points.
