LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

Queerness offers a much-needed fresh perspective.

Being a queer environmental movement means standing alongside feminism, and any efforts to dismantle the patriarchy and redefine these roles.

“Queer ecology” is about seeing with new eyes, challenging the biases we bring to nature and redefining what we see as “natural”.

Governments, corporate and economic globalisation, science and technology – are all shaped by the cultural norms of the white, wealthy, western, non-disabled, male, cisgender and heterosexual.

Many queer people have forged strong connections with our own communities and networks. We have the experience of mobilising people as we fight for justice, standing in solidarity with others.

Just in case you thought queer politics cant have permeated every part of society, this shows that queerness is seen as making you superior, whilst at the same time saying you are the most marginalised.

NB - the quotes above are my extracts, not the full in depth analysis of the article!!

Six reasons why I'm calling for a queer climate movement | Friends of the Earth

Lewis Carr (he/they), a Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, reminds us that creating a fairer and greener world for everyone needs to include everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community, and that doing so could help unlock the change we all so desperate...

Yes I did read it in full, and quite honestly couldn't follow most of the logic.

But on reading it, and as many other such distortions of real issues, I cant help but think a lot of it is about competing with women, who are the most likely to be impacted by natural disasters.

Not only because like everyone else they lose their homes, their livelihoods, but are usually the ones who take on the additional distress of having to protect children, and as always, are vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation by men. (eg Haiti)

Its as though although acknowledging the danger of patriarchal behaviour on women, they are saying but we aren't one of them. We're queer, so we're okay.

So yes, this is all about erasing women, their history and the cross society global wide fact that women are subjected to male exploitation.

LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

I work in an area of climate change. It is true to say communities who are marginalised, poor, women and the young will be more impacted by climate change.

LGBTQIA+ communities are more marginalised, poorer and younger than 'average'. However, I'm not sure they are some of the most impacted.

I'm struggling to find exact figures or reports that are not somewhat sensationalised LGBTQIA+ articles making claims.

Without getting into a race/argument to say who is most impacted, I find the article rather at odds with inclusion of others. Almost a primacy of someone because they are LGBTQIA+, rather than because they are most impacted or considerably impacted. The defining factors here should be the amount of impact climate change will have on a community or individual, and an inclusive approach of a range of views, voices and needs.

It's ridiculous, obviously, but it's only an opinion piece from some low level dweeb. FoE aren't pushing it as policy.

How on EARTH does being a cosplayer make you "most impacted" by environmental issues??!!

Especially hot inside a furry costume.

Take a bow, you win the thread.

Off to my banking app to cancel the 28 year old direct debit I’ve been sending to FoE.

😂👏👏

Oldnproud · 29/06/2023 19:17

I can't be bothered to read it, but I can think of no logical reason whatsoever as to why bring queer would mean that a person is more impacted by the environmental crisis. As a PP said, what a load of shite!

IncomingTraffic · 29/06/2023 19:16

They are seriously claiming that queer people are among the most impacted by climate change.

seriously!?!

Not children and disabled people living unbelievably precarious conditions in the poorest parts of the world. Nope. People with blue hair and bucket loads of identity in the USA have it the worstest of all.

I used to vote Green. I find the science around global warming confusing and I rather lazily used to just believe activists and green politicians. Now they appear to be so wrapped up in the trans debate from an anti-science, anti-enlightenment perspective I find myself querying everything they stand for. I guess I’ve stopped trusting what they say. This kind of activism can’t be doing them any favours.

Just when you think things can't possibly get any crazier!!!

despicable me what GIF

The second example linked is a man using the women's showers in 2005!

That's a deep barrel he/they scraped.

“LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis.”

There was me thinking it was people who lived in areas with huge droughts, raging wildfires, flash flooding…

No, silly. It's middle class students with blue hair and a special identity - they are the most victimised ever and ever amen.

CorruptedCauldron · 29/06/2023 19:00

Mic drop! 👏🏻 That says it all. This insatiable need to keep centring the ‘queer community’ in all issues - no matter how tenuous the link - is getting embarrassing.

Froodwithatowel · 29/06/2023 19:00

Er....

Let's re define nature to mean a pile of toxic waste. Yay! Celebrate that nature! The toxic waste is wonderful, natural and good.

Say it's good. Now. Or you're a bigot and we'll hit you.

Boiledbeetle · 29/06/2023 18:57

I don't do climate stuff anyway I'm doubly not doing queer climate stuff.

This is just going beyond silly into downright ridiculous now!

Annaissleeping · 29/06/2023 18:54

This needs to be so thoroughly ridiculed.

How do people write this with a straight face?

nepeta · 29/06/2023 18:28

The most impacted are poor people, especially those who live in the global south.

The arguments here remind me of an activist email I received after Roe v. Wade went down which said that queer people were the group most affected by abortion bans which made zero sense as that group is probably (at least) half male and because many Lesbians are in same-sex relationships.

It's a similar attempt to link this group with other causes and strengthen its place in the victim hierarchy.

As an aside, if you remove 'white' and 'Western' from their fifth reason, you get how all (or almost all) societies work: They are ruled by wealthy, non-disabled, heterosexual and 'cisgender' men.

Woman2023 · 29/06/2023 18:22

I used to think Friends of the Earth were either a benign or positive organisation. How did they become so open-minded their brains fell out?

RavingStone · 29/06/2023 18:22

This shit just alienates normal people, people who don't speak academicese and old skool leftie environmentalists from the movement.

Leaving mostly trustafarians.

I'm not reading the article, but I am trying to get my head round why this could be so. And I can't.

Me neither. I mean, if you're impacted you're impacted and your sexuality is irrelevant. I reckon it's one of those 'If we say it often enough and loudly enough people will accept it without asking for actual evidence' statements.
