Yes this is the feminism board. Paul Embery clipped it but I wonder if anyone saw it in full? He says the piece was about the impact of soaring water bills on an everyday mother. The voiceover calls the person a customer but the customer calls themself a mum. On the Twitter thread someone points out that the customer works for the TUC and is an economist who has been published in the Guardian. I think it’s fair to say the customer is neither a mother nor an ‘everyday’ one.

Owen Jones' misogyny and hatred of Rosie Duffield rearing its head...

Ignoring the fact that the original post by a man has far more comments, likes and retweets...

I can't get over slipping so many untruths into one to one segment.

How could you possibly be expected to go along with the idea that this person is struggling to get 'what their kids need' any more than going along with the idea that they're' a mum like me'

All a bit Pulp for me.

I guess if you exist in a bubble where what you say about yourself becomes the absolute truth that no one is allowed to question, then why not pretend you're able to imagine what poverty is like too?

I bet they did it on purpose so people would focus on the absurdity of a man pretending to be a woman, rather than the rapidly rising cost of living.

That's one interpretation.

My feeling is that it's more likely that (not so) random man saying he's a mum and washing a breast pump is to try to normalise it ie nothing to see here folks. Gaslighting in plain sight.

No, it's not cisgender woman, just woman.

We have plodded along for thousands of years just being called woman and it is not for you and a small minority to change it.

Or (thinking about it) step mums, foster mums, the non-child bearing partner in a lesbian couple...

I think a step mum using the term "mum" when the actual mum is still around would cause all manner of ruptions actually.

All females....

Imagine a white person blacking themselves up and going on tv to talk about an issue that tv bosses have decided affects Black people more than white people (though it doesn’t really), and them saying “as a Black person, I’m affected because…”

@TeaKlaxon @Flickersy do you think that that would be ok, as long as the person’s family all go along with their belief that they are Black?

or would it be utterly outrageous?

MissMissive · 29/06/2023 19:32

Flickersy · 29/06/2023 19:18

Apparently not, if you're confused about the thrust of the conversation.

I’m clearly not confused about anything. Biological or otherwise. But I can let what you’re implying go as it’s derailing the thread and is not helpful to the original point.

Adoptive families are not here to be used as gotchas by others. Shame on you Flickersy & TeaKlaxon for using such a vulnerable group of children and their families in a desperate attempt to justify cultural appropriation.

Shame on the news item for yet again cutting women out of the conversation. That is what is insulting.

You can believe what you like.

You don't get to dictate what other parents call themselves in everyday conversation, any more than I get to dictate what you call yourself within your family.

Oh TeaKlaxon. I am not dictating. I am describing reality.
The words for Mother and Father are old as the hills in any language.

Mother is the woman, the female.
Father is the man, the male.

It is a lie for any parent to try to change this extremely basal fact for small children. But of course, despite apparently being an actual nazi, I am not going to barge into anyones home and demand at gunpoint what they tell their children to call themselves.
I will, However, point out basic facts here on Mumsnet.

A man can never be a mother. A woman can never be a father. Doesn't matter what clothes they wear, what legal documents say is their current sex, what toilet and changing room facilities they use.

If a man, the kind that are born male, states they are a woman or a mother then that man is a liar.

@Flickersy - do you think males can be mothers?

No, but I shouldn't have to parrot certain mantras to be taken seriously. This is MN, not stonewall.

Flickersy · 29/06/2023 18:58

MissMissive · 29/06/2023 18:26

This is ever so odd. I haven’t said this at all, you know?

Nice and simple - mother = female parent.

The shocking thing is how ITV are quite happy to put someone on who is the climate change lead at the TUC and has been on TV before as a taking head. They are not just an ordinary customer of Thames Water and their background and political views should be made clear and declared up front. The other stuff is additionally undermining of anything they are saying.

It's all lies. Shameful and a total waste of airtime as it's not even effective propaganda!

Exactly,
you could then specify:
Biological parent
Adoptive parent
Step-parent
In-law parent

If they are female, they are mothers
if they are male, they are fathers
