About fecking time. Now make "sex" a category that can be subject to harassment

What I like about Musk (and there isn’t a lot) is that he’s able to spark discussion about these topics and it gives others the ability to say what they think and be heard.

I think many people don’t think about what cis means and are just using it to be kind. But once people start talking about it as a slur or how it means identifying as the gender that aligns with your biological sex, people go hang on a minute…

Personally I don’t identify as cis as I don’t identify with “woman” as a gender. I am biologically one, but I refuse to identify into my own oppression. While I can’t see inside their heads, I think everyone I know is NOT cis as no one identifies as gender conforming.

We’re all biologically male or female, the rest is just your personality.

@BernardBlacksMolluscs think you are right. So we need to keep telling users to stop with that term. Normalise criticism of it.

As always, love your username

Banning words does not help free speech. Even stupid words

but reading the tweet, I don’t think that’s what he’s saying

Repeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions.

The words “cis” or “cisgender” are considered slurs on this platform.

I think he’s saying don’t keep calling someone cis if they’ve asked you to stop

I’d expect (and hope) that twitter users can still use ‘cis’ (and thereby reveal themselves to be idiots) in a general, not targeted way. And that’s a good thing

@PurpleBugz I might be incredibly naive but surely in online dating then women and transwomen would be better than cis women and women?
Honestly I might be over sensitive and old fashioned, (I’m not sure when cis became a ‘common’ term but not for decades of my life) but being referred to as a cis woman feels like I’m less of a woman - a person I’ve been happy to be all my life. Interestingly, spell check doesn’t like the word cis 🤷‍♂️

I fully agree I'm a woman not a cus woman. I find it offensive to so I'm not making a counter argument really just acknowledging a point I saw someone else make on twitter.

Trans women will message you if you say woman as TWAW.

However I don't think it makes much difference my experience is TW act like men online dating anyway in that they spam multiple profiles without even reading them. Just this morning I have a "hey gurl how's your week going" from what is definitely a man. If he had read my profile it's very clear I'm not going to respond to him 🤷‍♀️

The most important thing is that the term is now up for discussion and is no longer seen as a natural or neutral term. It is an ideological term which has been imposed on others without their permission. Which is, of course, a huge irony given how sensitive and precious trans activists are about the use of 'correc't pronouns.

I completely agree with all of this. And YY to the hypocrisy of TRAs!

QueenVerilas · 21/06/2023 08:05

ResisterRex · 21/06/2023 07:35

Yes, and he's also made the point about calling yourself what you like, in a reply to someone else. It seems it's more about not insisting others have labels that you apply to them. Which seems fair?

But by that argument, does that mean women should be banned for referring to men as men, if that man says he is a woman?

@PurpleBugz , then make a complaint quoting Musk and this twitter.com/womenreadwomen/status/1671378744324521986?s=46&t=r5kx3z5-8Bi2hSNZTB-1lA

Businesses stop being gobshites if you tell them being a gobshite is bad for business. Or new non-gobshite businesses capitalise on a gap in the market

It is wonderful to hear.

@PurpleBugz don't use that website

They are literally all like it 🤷‍♀️

bellinisurge · 21/06/2023 07:45

@PurpleBugz , I see what you are trying to do but Be Kind is over. "Women" doesn't need a qualifier .

This month is turning out to be a revelation! Long overdue that the imposition of language and a false identity on the majority by a small unrepresentative but exceptionally powerful group was challenged.

PurpleBugz · 21/06/2023 07:38

@hannahwaddinghamsbiceps

Yes woman would be the preferred word. But in the example of dating sites using that word as what you seek you get messages from men so I do see the need for a word

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 21/06/2023 07:35

PurpleBugz · 21/06/2023 07:31

My initial response was great but read a few comments and someone on twitter says they use it on their dating profile as a preference to say they don't want to date trans people without 'being offensive' and getting banned. Which made me pause to think. Maybe natal women is the equivalent 🤷‍♀️

Or just 'woman' ....

Twitter isn't a place for nuanced discussion, or rationality. What I have often seen is people saying one minute 'Everybody should be able to identify as they like, nobody knows better than you your true self, you're trans if you say you are, identity matters far more than body parts' etc etc and in the next breath when someone objects to being labelled as cisgender 'But it's a statement of fact! How can you object to a scientific fact? Bigot!'

What I hope Musk is instructing the moderators is that if a Twitter user objects to being labelled as cis/cisgender or related insults (James Esses says he has been taunted with being a cissy, for example), this will be grounds for sanctions on the offending users who refuse a reasonable request from another user to desist.

Excellent news, keep up the good work Mr. Musk!

Florissante · 21/06/2023 07:28

Good and about time.

QueenVerilas · 21/06/2023 07:23

I don’t think I agree with this and it would appear to be a colossal own goal from someone who has placed himself as a free speech defender. (Unless he is going to use this to show how wrong it is to declare certain words ‘slurs’ and ban them in a ‘look at this anti- free speech position can also be used against you too self-styled progressive lefties! Do you see the importance of free speech now??’ Sort of way).

I despise the word ‘cis’ for the same host of reasons everyone here does, but it exists as a word to describe a concept within a particular belief system, much like ‘infidel’ ‘apostate’ or ‘unsaved’ do within their belief systems. I don’t think those words should be banned either even though I don’t like the concepts they describe either.

The real battle is that ‘cis’ should be used only within private belief systems, as ‘infidel’ and ‘unsaved’ do. Public bodies should not be adopting this word which reflects an invented concept within an unevidenced, unscientific secular belief system which is offensive (and harmful) to many.

bellinisurge · 21/06/2023 07:16

A term coined by a paedophile to describe people who are not trans is not a term I want used to describe me .

OP posts:
BordoisAgain · 21/06/2023 07:12

Lots of words now considered slurs were previously scientific terms.

In this particular case the word is not even being used in the scientific context it actually means.
