Musk is insane. Nothing he dies or says makes any sense. He should not be banning words randomly, but whatever.

He’s not banning the word. But if someone is insisting on calling a person “cis” despite that person rejecting the term it will be considered harassment. Gender believers can cis each other to their hearts’ content.

what about all the other things that people were not allowed to say on Twitter before he bought it?

MerlinsLostMarbles · 21/06/2023 23:17

Well done, Elon Musk.

Ignore all the homophobes and transphobes calling LGBT people "perverts/groomers/pedos/etc etc" on a daily basis and focus instead on an ancient Latin prefix used in various contexts that means "on the same side of".

Makes total sense /s

Where did the word come from ?

"In English, the term cisgender was coined in 1994 in a Usenet newsgroup about transgender topics.[24] On that newsgroup, Dana Defosse, then a graduate student, sought a way to refer to non-transgender people that avoided marginalizing transgender people or implying that transgender people were an other."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisgender

The prefix cis is Latin and goes way back at least to ancient Rome. I have a feeling the ancient Romans had other things to do than complain about it.

TheShellBeach · 21/06/2023 22:56

Well done, Elon Musk.

And that's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

‘Cis’ should never be used in any secular neutral discussion. Nor should it be used by gender identity politics believers who are trying to avoid projecting any prejudice.
‘Cis’ should be put in the same nasty derogatory category as religious people’s insults for people who don’t share their belief system. That is how ‘cis’ is used and what it means.

What? I find it’s usually the other way round - non religious people making nasty insults about religious people.

Where did the word come from ?

Molecules. And as I am not a molecule I fail to see how it applies to me.

Transitioning gender became transgender, became trans, oh look chemistry uses trans and the opposite is cis, so lets use cis as opposite to transgender.

Hairday · 21/06/2023 22:49

It seems sus to be celebrating his move on here. There's no way its pro feminist.

sanluca · 21/06/2023 22:47

it's mainly used to clarify if a person is trans or not

It is only used in relation to transgender when certain people who put a lot of faith in their idea of gender want to label other people, regardless if those people have the same set of beliefs. So when discussing amongst themselves, people can use cis and trans to their hearts content.
But when someone clearly states they don't want to be labelled in a certain way by someone else and that someone else continues labelling the first person, the second person is pushing their sets of beliefs onto other people. If the second person doesn't stop, that is harrassment.

JanesLittleGirl · 21/06/2023 22:41

Sorry, I should have made clear that since I believe that gender is an artificial construct, cisgender is equally meaningless.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/06/2023 22:39

cisgender = your gender aligns with your sex right?

but no-one is ever able to explain the characteristics of the gender that aligns with a female body and the gender that aligns with a male one

leaving me forced to conclude that it's all sexist, made up bollocks

Circumferences · 21/06/2023 22:38

I have a problem being called "cisgender" as it happens.

It's because I don't believe in gender ideology.

My being called a "cis woman" is deliberately offensive and provocative. Just no. It's not "just a description" it's forcing an ideology upon me that I vehemently disagree with and it's insulting.

JanesLittleGirl · 21/06/2023 22:30

MerlinsLostMarbles · 21/06/2023 22:24

Saying cisgender on any other social media platform isn't any problem, just to add.

I don't have a problem with cisgender. I have a huge problem with cis-woman. I am a woman. Full stop.

Good, I regard it as an insult from unpleasant people

Funny because I've never seen it used as an insult, it's mainly used to clarify if a person is trans or not. I've never seen anyone shout "cis" in the street at non-trans people to insult them. I have however, seen and heard plenty of derogatory insults thrown at gay and trans people. "Groomer" for an example seems to be thrown around on Twitter on a daily basis.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cisgender

Despite what EM says, it's in the dictionary and has been for a long time, and no dictionary I've looked cisgender up in lists it as vulgar/offensive/slur. (Dictionaries always add a note next to offensive words.)

The Latin prefix "cis" (goes back a long time) means "on the same side as", and is used in many contexts besides gender.

IMHO you can't just announce "cisgender" is an offensive slur because you don't like the fact transpeople exist.

JudgeAnderson · 21/06/2023 22:21

Tricky one. I find the term offensive but I don't want people to lose the right to offend me.
However I am glad to see the usage challenged.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/06/2023 22:17

Thankfully people have had enough of the BS and know that facts matter, gender is a made up concept and more and more are not accepting the crap

That's what's great. It's given people permission to object to it. And lots of people are totally bemused that so many people have an issue with it, because they only see one side.

Wiccan · 21/06/2023 21:04

Brilliant news ! I have told 2 people to fuck off this week for calling me that . 😁

Oh they are 'Jonathan' is telling Musk that he's only the owner, not the one in charge!

Their heads will explode when people don't except their ideology. Toys out the pram time. Thankfully people have had enough of the BS and know that facts matter, gender is a made up concept and more and more are not accepting the crap

Love Elon for this. Sanity staring to prevail, at last.

NotHavingIt · 21/06/2023 14:51

Imposing the term cis on people who do not share the belief system is a political act - not a neutral act. It violates the dignity and integrity of people - and what's more it is most often used as a pejorative - in the same way that 'straight' is used as a negative value judgement compared to 'queer'.

bellinisurge · 21/06/2023 14:36

"But it's perfectly natural for an interest group, community, or whatever to coin little bits of its own specialist vocabulary,"
It's when they impose that dumb shit on other people and call them bigots for dismissing it.
It's like saying I'm a typical Taurean or typical Leeds United fan . It means fuck all and bears no relation to me in real life.
