Irrationally annoyed about educated women who should know better peddling Cis bollox

I didn't know what to title this, but is anyone else feeling like this lately? In the last few weeks/ months I have been majorly turned off people I follow on podcasts or youtube when I hear them refer to 'cis women' as though it's totally normal. These are well educated women, who in any other context would apply rational thinking, but why do they have to undermine their credibility with this shit?

Abbey Sharp - dietician on youtube who sort of dissects other people's diets, and usually uses research papers to back up her claims on nutrition and health. Also mocks people who follow faddy diets (that's sort of her style). And yet, when I was watching a video a while ago on the best diet for menstruation, underneath she had written the following grovelling apology:
NOTE EXCLUSIVE LANGUAGE- Gah I am so sorry, I was not thinking inclusively. This is something I have been actively working on (this video was shot months ago), and in fact, I just shot another video related to PCOS and was really careful to constantly say "people" and not "women". Will continue to try harder and do better!

Nice bit of self flagellation there...

Suzanna Lipscomb - I really loved the 'Not just the Tudors' podcast and had been listening to random episodes over the last few months, only when I got to an episode on menstruation in Tudor times, of course it was made clear this is about 'cis women'. FFS. What's even more annoying is in a previous episode her and the guest had been making fun of the ridiculous things that used to be believed about health in Tudor times (the four humours of the body).

Stacy Sims - Exercise Psychologist and Nutritional Scientist, has a PHD, I was watching her on a recent interview with Katie Couric about women's health in menopause. In the first few minutes, she talks about 'cis women' and I want to throw something at the screen.

Anyone else have examples, or shares my frustration?

Me too! I used to quote from the research that showed pronouns disadvantaged women but I have misplaced the link. But yes untrustworthy, not able to think logically, and clearly not very bright.

This article doesn't have research in it, but is convincing all the same - https://fairplayforwomen.com/pronouns/

@Farmageddon " Anyone else have examples, or shares my frustration? "

Can't think of an example offhand but i view anyone using pronouns and or the cis word as being thoroughly untrustworthy and to be actively avoided.

I've only read part of the thread, so apologies if this has already been covered. Do you (and any other poster on here also concerned) not write to them or contact them on this use of fake language? I always do. Politely, referencing the paragraphs, and where-ever possible, referencing the Equalities Act 2010, GDPR and impact of not recording data correctly. Sometimes I receive a reply, other times things are just changed. It takes time - I can't do too many each month. I dont ever use offensive language in my correspondence. But if we all keep doing this - bit by bit it will change.

That's a good point actually. I have written to my local politicians in the past (and basically been ignored) but maybe an email would be useful.

I think though I would find it difficult not to show my anger or frustration. I'm not sure how else I can put it other than 'Cis is complete bullshit', maybe that won't get very far. I suppose I could voice my disappointment at their lack of scientific rigour on this issue.

The thing is, they have lost me as a listener/ viewer. Maybe they don't care about that, who knows, but if enough of us tune out then maybe they'll wonder why.

Various PMS/PMDD organisations declining to specify that their work is about women, it's just ,'people' now. Boils my blood, as a sufferer.

Well I am very much an old leftie. A very old old leftie too. There's no way you can be a socialist and believe in this crap. Bastani should knob off and join the Greens.

The only old leftie I follow who isn't a sell out or barking mad is Kenan Malik . My apologies: there's Julie Bindel too of course.

Has anyone tried NOT taking a position I wonder? What happens if you literally say ‘I don’t have an opinion on this matter, I respect both sides’.

I don't believe in "not having an opinion"
Or "both sides-ism"
Trans activism and it's ascent thru cultural elites opinion and policy making, is a zero sum game.
I won't put myself in a situation where I'd have to censor myself on a moment to moment basis.
I've already turned down teaching and mentoring roles in my therapy-based profession to stay true to myself.

God I haven’t heard of Cultural Capital. I’m going to guess it’s because I have zero culture myself. Is this like some kind of snakes and ladders game. You can climb the ladder if you collect victim or virtue signalling stars but slide down the snakes of you forget pronouns. That kind of thing?

Relax. Cultural Capital just means your parents were literate , enumerate and reasonably articulate.
Perhaps they told you things about your ancestry , history , politics etc. Like many working class people including my own family.

Oh Bridget Christie!! The main threat to men, including transwomen, is men.

But that's no reason to abolish single sex spaces.

Have these people never actually discussed their beliefs with someone who felt safe enough to offer a counter thought?

They live in an echo chamber, encased in 10 feet thick lead-lined concrete walls, buried 3 miles underground.

I'm a lowly therapist in my field. Earning an honest living, actually having GC conversations with many patients.

Imagine I'm called up by the BBC to take part in a panel discussion, and the dreaded Trans rears its ugly head.

Can you imagine the internal pressure to conform, the fear of potential cancelling if I don't.

Now extrapolate that to those who's media careers are predicated on this bollox.

And where the pressures are myriad and ongoing.

I'm really unsure how I'd react, how I'd navigate all this.

There are advantages to being a lowly therapist...

education itself doesn't cure social problems.

But scientific education ought to cure scientific illiteracy and gullibility.

Well exactly, why don't they apply the same rigorous scientific approach to this topic? Why the unquestioned acceptance?

I think, as a previous poster has pointed out, there would never have been a reference to cis men if they were discussing male biology, it just wouldn't have been an issue (maybe because they know there wouldn't be the same pushback).

But that's what bugs me so much more about these specific examples - periods and menopause and exclusively experienced by biological women. i suppose I just saw these things as a sort of educational/ learning/ historical tool for women who want to know more about our biology. Only to be met with nonsense from the very start. How can I take them seriously after that?

The cognitive dissonance bothers me so much.

Most trans-identified people haven't had body modifications. Most people without a trans identity don't have any specific gender identity. So, really, I find trans basically useless when discussing matters of the body. And I find cos presumptious and frankly misgendering the majority of times it is used (so therefore literal violence)

RealityFan · 19/06/2023 15:09

Amazing really, isn't it?
This "comedy" is based on a ledger that she's kept, noting accumulated times of tasks that are automatically tasked to women my male-oriented society
"Take the bins out"
"Do the ironing"
"Collect the kids"
"Tell men to get out of her female spaces"
...oo-er, strangely THIS last one just won't feature will it?
And it is strange, because EVERY woman I know has had to accost men in their toilets and changing rooms.

Trans in women's spaces can't believe their luck that so many women in all positions of power and influence in (im)polite society have waved them in, and then gone onto gaslight the majority of women that they're hateful and prejudiced for opposing this.

The lack of self-awareness Grin. Your example there does neatly illustrate that people do not change. You will see the same patterns repeat over history - in this case that unevidenced beliefs come to have a strong grip in society and are accepted as fact. The Tudors had an excuse though - science was not a thing, let alone medical science. Nowadays, not so much excuse for adopting the language of a belief system with no scientific basis!

DamePickle · 19/06/2023 15:03

When I see these women using this language, I generally assume they know full well what sex people are and that it matters, but that they're terrified of being seen to get it wrong and are scrambling for a way to find the 'right' language to use in order to still be allowed to get their message across. Particularly if they're talking about female health. They're already committing a cardinal sin by acknowledging that female bodies have unique needs and difficulties and aren't the same as male bodies.

Igneococcus · 19/06/2023 15:00

Bridget Christie has a new comedy drama out called "The Change" about the menopause which she says affects “one-in-one women” but then also says this later on in the interview: “The main issues get lost in all the noise — which is, the main threat to all women, including trans women, is men. We should all be coming together, all women, and talking about that.”

Tbf, I didn't really expect any better of her.

CaptainWarbeck · 19/06/2023 14:47

Definitely pronounced 'sis'.

Sistanotcista · 19/06/2023 14:44

Good question, @Riverlee I've always pronounced it the same as "sister". I can see a name change coming up - I don't wish to be misunderstood!!

Riverlee · 19/06/2023 14:01

Is Cis pronounced Sis, as in Sister, or Kiss? I always pronounce it in my mind as Kiss.

RealityFan · 19/06/2023 13:54

Waitwhat23 · 19/06/2023 12:53

I immediately class anyone who uses cis or 'preferred' pronouns as -
a) credulous
b) severely lacking in critical thinking skills
and c) the kind of person who would be very easily led into scams/MLM's and similar.

Despite me not being a leftie, I have a lot of time for Aaron Bastani off Novara Media, and his class-based analysis of society.

He has pronouns in his bio, but I can look past this, he says he's #JustBeingKind.

But today he's Tweeted words to the effect that Sunak's new recommendations to not allow schools to allow pupil's contra trans IDs without parents' permission, is American-style alt right politics, and what's the problem with kids IDing differently and/or with parents' ignorance on the matter, as totally infuriating, and further evidence that even the trad class-analysis lefties are lost to this nihilistic cult.

YouJustDoYou · 19/06/2023 13:35

I remember Gemma Correll (artist) posted about International Women's Day or something like that and how "women in poverty around the world who don't have access to clean water suffer more with self-hygiene etc around their menstruation, and some "they/them" piped up with "er, I think you'll find it's "people who menstruate" not "women" - I feel really hurt and offended by what you've said. Gemma, who suffers from extreme anxiety and depression as it is which most people who follow her know full well, then grovelled and grovelled and apologised, erased the word woman/women and girls from all her posts and replaced it with people who menstruate. It was so frustrating.
