It was autcorrect striking again.

The sneering, bullying, Guardian-reading left hate the Daily Mail. For that reason alone I buy it every day. The left are doing all they can to destroy my identity. They've made the very idea of Englishness (and Britishness) toxic. The young know nothing about their own literature and culture. They don't even identify with it, let alone take any pride in it. We're raising a generation that pretty much hates its own country. But what do you expect? The long march through the institutions is complete. The left dominate publishing, the universities, and the arts. They run the BBC. They've even begun editing books and 'de-colonising' the libraries (god, it's straight out of Orwell's 1984). When Labour wins the next election, they'll have control of everything.

I don't like the Daily Mail, but anything that hurts or upsets the left makes me happy. I'm ordinary working-class, and centrist in my politics, but the left aren't on my side any more. On the contrary, they hate me.

The daily mail breeds hate. Life is too short to read that and get frothy about everything. It thrives on divide and rule. Surely you can see all it wants to do is keep the status quo. Ensuring we are ruled by the same small group of rich, Eton Oxbridge lot that the Mail et al is owned by. That's far more Orwellian than some made up junk about no carols . Newspeaks for the masses.

CallieQ · 14/06/2023 13:18

@JaneyGee

How can any of the things you mention be down to 'the Left' when the Tories have been in power for years????

Utter crap

You are polarising the debate again. It is not a case of being all in or all out. It’s possible to feel grateful to a publication for shining a light on one issue whilst still disliking it for another. In the sane way you might love your best friend but not agree with all of their political viewpoints.

That seems to have disappeared from so many peoples social interactions. Particularly online. You either slough with my thinking ENTIRELY or it’s off to the Gulag with you.

The world may not be black and white, but remember the OP is asking if we can have an appreciation thread for this specific paper. The objections people are raising are valid, imo, because they're highlighting why the paper doesn't deserve a whole thread of appreciation on a feminist board.

Appreciation for the paper for this article and others like it. I'm a feminist, and I'm happy to highlight and appreciate what the DM is doing here, because we absolutely need someone to do it.
Sure as shit any of the papers approved by those whining here aren't doing it. I'm a guardian reader through and through and they aren't doing it, are they?

Sometimes you have to take what you can get.

ClawedButler · 14/06/2023 13:17

Some posters appear to imagine that the DM is the only medium that runs stories with mass appeal in order to make money. Of course they would change their stance in a heart beat if it meant more readers - what does that tell you about the level of engagement with these issues in the wider world?

There isn't a single unbiased, agenda-less media outlet in existence.

There also isn't a single person let alone organisation that shares all my views exactly. If you can only bear to read views that tally with your own, maybe you're not as broadminded as you thought? It's also facile to denounce anyone/anything that has previously said things that don't accord with your own views - you can't hear what they say about anything, because you won't listen to them under any circumstances.

I'd consider myself left.
I don't hate you at all, just because someone holds different views to you doesn't mean they hate you, or want to destroy your identity!
This is what's wrong with it all - the utter hyperbole and everybody's out to get me mentality.
Stoking up division like said upthread.
Nothing to do with caring about women and their rights.

What's nuanced or complex about a rapist with his rapist cock bulging through his pink "lady leggings" nearly ending up in a women's prison? I don't care which media outlet reported that shitshow- it prevented vulnerable women from harm

Mail REALLY knew what they were doing when they posted that pic. A lot of media cropped it but the Mail showed it and everyone got the message.

And that's the type of media we need to highlight what this means for women. The Mail don't hold back.

OP posts:

Is this inability to see different aspects of things an issue throughout your life? Do you cut out any family member that has a different opinion on somehting to you?

Two things can both be true at the same time. They can print their pap shots in the sidebar of shame AND be a loud voice of reason on transactivism and womens rights.
Amazing how many of you can't see the grey....the world is not black and white.

Tropicaldi · 14/06/2023 13:11

Sorry. Nrtft - just the OP and the article. The article is very unclear. Everyone in it is referred to as female and she/her throughout, apart from Rosas. The sex of these activists is relevant.

Anyone reading through who didn’t know you should always perform your own fact-checking when the words ‘female’, ‘woman’ or ‘she’ or ‘her’ are used, would see this as ‘just an issue between women’.

I won’t get my bunting out for the DM based on this.

What are these 'low impact topics' and what are they distracting from? because I regard the threats to women's spaces, the castration of children and the definition of biological sex to be fundamental societal issues. Women's freedoms and rights seem to be regressing at an alarming rate but you reckon that's a 'distraction'?

Yes I do - it's a way of diverting attention from important topics that don't fit its political agenda. The economic impact of Brexit, the state of health and social care, the abysmal perforamnce of the Conservatives, inflation etc. Trans matters are of relatively low concern or consideration for most people in the UK on a daily basis.

Your belief these are fundemental societal issues that need a lot of attention is your perogative. I disagree.

tattygrl · 14/06/2023 13:10

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 14/06/2023 13:00

It's hardly a trailblazing bastion of speaking truth to power, is it. It's a massively financially successful business operation, nothing more

You'd be daft to think that the government of the day, whoever it is, doesn't pay attention to what occupies the tabloids. They have a readership of millions, and if they correctly identify what is a concern to their readers then government takes notice. Saying It's a massively financially successful business operation, nothing more is like saying Tesco's nothing more than a massively successful finanicial operation. Both have very successfully identified and appeal to their market and as a result wield power.

My point there re what you've quoted me was responding to the PP who said (I'm summarising) that the DM deserves recognition for talking about issues other publications wouldn't touch, and I was saying that they're not brave for writing articles about stuff like this, they're not leading the crusade against the evil leftie snowflakes; they're a business making money. So my point was they are operating on business, money-making grounds, not socially conscious, brave and pioneering ones.

Beowulfa · 14/06/2023 13:09

Ohalpro · 14/06/2023 13:03

Agree.

And it worries me that people want to celebrate the fact that a nuanced, complex issue like this is being simplified into the daily Mail’s outrage fuelled form of ‘journalism’

it makes me suspect that the posters who are doing that don’t really care about having difficult, grown up conversations about the things that matter, but just want to feel like their own unchallenged opinions are vindicated.

What's nuanced or complex about a rapist with his rapist cock bulging through his pink "lady leggings" nearly ending up in a women's prison? I don't care which media outlet reported that shitshow- it prevented vulnerable women from harm.

maltravers · 14/06/2023 13:09

I would love a nuanced take on these issues in the Guardian, or on the BBC website, but since they are captured this is not currently possible. That being the case I will read the DM links reporting on these issues. It is clear the DM and the Telegraph have identified GI issues as a major issue for Labour. Good. Now at least part of the press is airing this issue Labour will start to take these issues seriously and hopefully it will push them towards respecting women and children’s rights and safety as well as trans peoples. Good work Daily Mail imo.

Lifeomars · 14/06/2023 13:09

I read news from a wide variety of sources: The Guardian, Mail on line, Byline Times, local press, Twitter, I watch ITV and Channel 4 news and listen to LBC. I do this to try to address my own biases (we all have them) and to try get a nuanced picture of current affairs. Personally I find the Mail pretty objectionable about most subjects, but it has a massive reach and influence much of which I personally find pretty toxic.

When the DM stop posting long-distance-lens swimwear creep shots of female celebrities at the beach with captions like "Billie Piper shows off her curves in revealing two piece while on sexy jaunt with rumoured lover"...

...then you might have a hope in hell of convincing me DM is a beacon of feminism
