If it's not about overall support of the DM, why do they deserve a praise thread on a major feminism board?

And for the people demanding I name a publication that's more feminist than DM, just pick any out of a hat that isn't The Sun, or any I'm forgetting that do page three etc. I'm not getting into a thing of comparing the Guardian to the DM on trans issues, that wasn't my point. My point is that the DM talking about this one issue does NOT make them a feminist ally, when they have been, and still are, so desperately harmful to women for other reasons.

I thought the left were happy to support sex workers as a legitimate career option? Surely a publication that pays women handsomely to expose their breasts is the epitome of feminism?

Beowulfa · 14/06/2023 14:16

I personally think the shittiness of female celebrity body gossip is a lesser evil than the sustained attack on the concept of women/girls as a sex class. We are not blessed with an enticing cakeshop window of lovely choices in 2023.

'eliminating a subset of women'

Eh? Which women?

You can't have it all ways. You can't say that transwomen are making a mockery/presenting a danger towards 'real' women by wanting to share their space/be acknowledged as women, while shrugging your shoulders at a publication that has primarily made its money from fetisishing the female body and mocking anything that falls outside of its narrowly defined gender roles. Dig into pretty much any long running thread on this board and you'll find comments linking male to female transgenderism with fetishistic motive but apparently that's not relevant when it's a zoomed in paparazzi camera on an eighteen year old's cleavage? Give me a break.

The DM doesn't give a shit about 'fighting women's corners' - if it did it would stop feeding the sidebar of shame and instruct its reporters to cover issues like why more mums than ever before are having to turn to food banks under the Conservative government and the effect that's having on their mental health and our future generations. They'd be talking about rape culture, the lack of cultural and leisure opportunities for young working class girls, the way the NHS is still failing women of colour... the list goes on.

The sexualisation of barely legal female bodies in the media is an issue you should be far more concerned about than the miniscule percentage of the population who identify as transgender. Your daughters are FAR more likely to be influenced by the unrealistic beauty and gender standards they see in these tabloids than they are the tiny and minute possibility that they may encounter a transwoman (much less a predatory one) in a woman's public toilet. But once again, with the creation and endorsement of this thread, gender critical feminists have proved they're a single issue movement who don't care about women, only eliminating a subset of women they see as unaccepable.

Oh, great, can you supply a list of the issues I should care about, ranked in order of importance, pls? And handy hints of how I should feel about each. Many thanks.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/06/2023 14:08

Well, asked at least three times but couldn't/wouldn't name a title. I won't pursue it any further, it would be mean and the deflection and lack of an answer speaks volumes. Unless an answer was given and I missed it, in which case I apologise.

Not a fan of the Mail except on this subject. Not a fan of the Guardian at all. They've turned out to be not what I thought they were. Thanks to the anti-DM Mail readers, most of your criticisms are entirely valid, although some apply to most news media.

What subset of women exactly? Women aren't sets or subsets. We are one set.

@notokaywiththetropes it was the same on the Elon Musk thread there was a minority very pissed off that one of the world's most influential & poweful men (who happens to be the parents of a trans child) has spoken out against the sterilisation of trans kids.
Like who would not find that a cause of celebration? Like Elon the DM is huge, it's influential & has the ability to reach far & wide.

It's nice to see new names on the board, anyway.

If you have strong feelings about what should and shouldn't be on the feminist board, join in! Start threads! Feminism is made of bloody arguments. Bring it!

I love that about feminist groups. We can scream bloody murder at each other but we know we'd be be by the side of anyone here who needed it.

But that doesn't warrant a praise thread on a major feminist board. That warrants you personally being pleased they're talking about an issue important to you. They're deeply anti-feminist, deeply anti-woman. You can easily google the reasons why and see endless examples, with more to be found in today's, tomorrow's and next week's editions. I know I keep threatening to leave then coming back which is deeply cringe of me, but I'm really, really, seriously done now. Having to explain on a feminist board why I don't think the Daily Mail deserves the united praise of feminists was not something I ever thought I'd have to do.

If one feminist wants to post it, and other feminists want to agree, who do you think you are to tell us that it is not warranted?

You can keep on all you like about how deeply unfeminist they are, but you haven't answered why then they are the only paper who is making such a strong stance on something very important to many feminists? Why they are the ones supporting women and campaigning for womens rights?

You're just whining about how you don't like them .Well frankly, who the fuck cares whether you like them? Few of us do. But we need voices on this, and this is a loud one and the papers you do like are not only quiet they are shouting for the wrong side.

Grow up.

ClawedButler · 14/06/2023 13:58

Fx sake.

I appreciate what they're doing with this issue, getting it out in plain, mainstream sight.

I have enough critical faculty to be aware that I disagree with their stance on almost every other subject.

The problem with a purity spiral is that it only ever gets narrower and eventually you will find yourself outside it. If you decide today that you are better vegans/feminists/climate activists/whatever than others, one day someone will decide, on their own criteria, that they are a better vegan/feminist/climate activist than you.

55balloons · 14/06/2023 13:57

@tattygrl the articles they are publishing currently are highlighting how women's rights are being violated & eroded. It is vital that this is kept in the spotlight. They are the only mainstream publication properly telling it as it is.
Do you care about all the children being harmed @tattygrl with the major surgeries being performed on them.. Double maccestomies? It's horrifying.

Read a newspaper for information.

Don't read it for salvation, or to show allegiance. If you restrict your exposure to news to only those outlets you deem morally worthy, then you risk sealing yourself in a bubble.

Capitalism is doing odd things to people's moral compasses. So many people seem to make moral judgements on very slight bases.

So we get 'dog whistles' and cancelling, ex-communicating those who've sinned. There seems to be a real fear of contamination when it comes to thoughts and beliefs. A new kind of pseudo religious thinking. Tribal, simplistic, and superstitious.

I guess if you don't practise critical thinking and interrogate assertions, seek evidence, look for altnerative views, then you may indeed be more susceptible to being accidentally brainwashed.

But as a woman & a parent this is the single biggest issue that reasonates with me. It is the issue I care deepest about. It will completely influence me vote, influence what companies I'll spend my money on & what I steer my young children to.

So the DM is actively reporting on the issues I care about & they are the only ones who are publishing at the level I want.

@ClawedButler this is literally called the DM appreciation thread and it’s a sorry read.

Thank you. Idk about you, Lady, but I'm off. I think the DM fans want to get started on the party they're throwing for the newspaper that promoted upskirting, creates headlines about female politician's bodies and outfits, and was supportive of the Nazi party. Fair fucks to them, I'm only sorry the DM got them on side so bloody easily.

"The Daily Mail doesn't hold back". Once again, seriously, you're granting them this inspiring tenacity so, so very easily. They DO hold back. They hold back on issues they don't think will get them views from their readership. They go hard on the issues they know will go down well with right wing twerps, and, on this ONE occasion, GC feminists. It didn't take bloody much, did it, for feminists to forget upskirting, dehumanising photos and comments on womens' bodies and columns from bigots, not to mention the literal Nazi sympathising history. Please stop viewing them as brave, pioneering "truth tellers". They HAPPEN to align with you on this one aspect of gender issues. That's it. Jfc I can't do this thread any more. Praise away, fairweather feminists.

Yep
It's also not the thread for you apparently if you point any of that out, and also the DM are for women despite all that.
It's not about care for women at all.

In terms of the massive safeguarding failure that is gender indoctrination in schools, the DM is good. And not only that, it's one of the few bringing these issues into the light. Far too many journalists from other sources are running scared and put their own self-preservation above children.

I'm not going to be shamed for reading a wide range of sources in order to make children safer. Sorry but the answer's a firm NO.

Shame on those who put political purity above the safety of our kids.

I'd be happy if there's another source for the story upthread about the teacher who was reported as a safeguarding risk for delivering a scientifically factual lesson on puberty.

That's not what's happening here.

We agree - they happen to align with us on this one issue. We are pleased that sunlight is getting to these issues that we've been shouting into the void about for years.

This does not mean we suddenly like everything the DM has ever printed.
