Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are there any liberal/progressive US GC feminists?

I used to live the US, well before the gender madness, and admired lots of American feminists, all of whom now seem to have lost their minds.

We are seeing increasing pushback against the medicalisation of children and males in women's sports in Red (Republican) states but, because the US is so politically polarised, this seems to be making every Democrat and left-leaning woman double-down on supporting trans activists, at the expense of women.

WoLF are awesome, but explicitly non-partisan.

Are there any GC US voices on the left?

I just found one more! Julie Lane. She has a feminist group Women Are Real. They protested a high school track meet in Northern California last month to protest that a trans-identifying boy was being allowed to run against girls.

The only comparable gender critical figure to JKR I can think of is not American but does live there a lot of the time - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Obviously she doesn't have the household name and wealth factor but she is a prominent left leaning feminist author with cache among liberal affluent ladies of the US.

I listened to this earlier which was encouraging. Steven Pinker is a big hitter on academic thinking. It's at about 30 mins in.

With yeehaw lands and Trump so often portrayed it's easy to forget how radically progressive the progressive side in US is.

Nigerian US based author - Chimamanda Ngozi started soft on the differences between transgender women (who had male privileges) and women born female and she got huge backlash. That was a few years ago and the backlash against her did set off the path for me to peaking. We don't hear much from her now.

Alice Walker?

Another thread on a Newsweek article reminded me that Dr Amy Chai, one of the contributors to that article, is worth looking out for.

She is not necessarily left but she is a clinician whose practice deals with public health and addictions and she herself somehow got through John Hopkins despite a seriously improvised background. She is a natural educator and posts a lot on Quora. Overtime she has become increasingly open about being gender critical. One of the good guys.

Re the race angle:

One big difference between the US and UK is the huge number of black and hispanic transwomen (virtually all androphilic - the type who were gender nonconforming boys from very early on and would have simply become young gay men had they been left alone).

As it is still very hard to be openly gay in many working class black/hispanic communities, this often means that if you are one of these teenage boys, then going "undercover" as a woman (which involves leaving home with no support, moving into another town and going into the sex trade/petty crime/getting into a relationship with an aggressive and dangerous man) may seem like the only way to survive. This, combined with the fact that the US is an unusually high-crime society anyway by developed country standards, results in these transwomen suffering high rates of violent crime and even violent death.

The long-term solution to this unhappy state of affairs is to reduce the homophobia which is preventing these boys from simply living happy and healthy lives as gay men. Unfortunately, people on the American left find it easier to blame feminists for "murdering transwomen" every time women voice the slightest objection to having biologically male people in their changing rooms and sports events etc. The fact that most of these transwomen suffering these very difficult and violent situations are black and hispanic makes it very easy to paint GC feminists as being clueless white women who Just Don't Get It.

So yes, it is likely that any feminist breaking ranks on this will need to be non white to make any difference. Yes, it's stupid that it has to be this way, but America's difficult racial history and the tendency towards shame-faced hand-wringing embarrassment about race among the US left makes a lot of issues very hard to discuss sensibly, and this is one of them.

Yes it is a good angle to consider.

And visible US progressives tend to be stridently more progressive. Two of my US academic friends are being scared off UK as wicked Terf-hotbed by their fellow academic friends, clearly not knowing of universities being captured.

MrsAlgernon · 14/06/2023 21:42

Good question, don't think there is anyone as famous as JKR.

One may want to go through Benjamin Boyce interviewees.

Eliza Mondegreen, the one commentator I return to, again and again.

DogandMog · 14/06/2023 18:27

Lierre Keith... she speaks/writes so eloquently, I can't believe she's not better known.

If you are OK with male writers, Jesse Singal and Noah Smith (Bloomberg) have written about this issue very sensibly (Jesse Singal was one of the first to break ranks).

namitynamechange · 14/06/2023 01:03

I was trying to imagine who the American JKR would be (left leaning, influential, independent, having FU money, famous of their own accord (eg not as part of a power couple), and female and struggled to think of anyone. Which is interesting in itself... Maybe Taylor Swift fits that profile (but would never happen she's fully allied on LGBTQ issues. And even though she's a megastar still gets an amazing amount of grief from both sides)

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 13/06/2023 20:39

Upthread I said we were saved here by JKR. It was the same here until she stepped.

JKR is a heroine, but I don't think that's quite true. There was already left-leaning GC activism from Women's Place, for example. Janice Turner - who writes for the Times but who certainly isn't right-wing - was already publishing articles, and even the Guardian let the occasional piece by Suzanne Moore and Hadley Freeman through the blackout. There was silence from the broadcast media and political parties (though Janice Turner and the Spectator had started to put pressure on the Tories), but there was more debate amongst other left-leaning and centrist voices than even now in the US.

PotteringPondering · 13/06/2023 20:22

I suspect the moral of the story is that those leading the GC cause in the States, at least for now, will mostly be politically conservative or have a faith-based motivation.

UK progressives on the centre-left (including me) may find that a little uncomfortable – but hey, that's life.

One of the main reasons most ordinary people in the US are still instinctively GC is because of the dramatically higher rates of religious faith over there (it gives them a place to stand to question the gender woo swallowed by others). We don't have to agree with their whole agenda to be co-belligerents.

Abigail Shrier is brilliant.

There are plenty of others making stuff happen. But yes, the biggest hitters are mostly on the right. Kellie-Jay has been astute in stirring up the conservative American constituency on all this.

Henddraig · 13/06/2023 20:09

There’s Katie Herzog who has a podcast called Blocked and Reported with Jesse Singal.

Oprah? Michelle Obama? No idea what their views are, but someone of that standing. I also think for a GC figurehead to gain traction with the left in the States it can't be a white woman. Too easy to be dismissed as 'white feminism' amidst all the intersectional forced teaming.

The Obamas were TERRIBLE on this and let the foxes into the hen house. Blew my mind as they have daughters. But I suppose their daughters will be shielded as they are Obamas.

Biden is even worse - see pictures from the White House Pride event, Admiral R Levine, Sec. of Health (one of the 7.1% of female Admirals in the US NAvy),

Harris is all in with her trendy, Parsons school of design, white step daughter doing fundraising for teen trans surgery.

I bet there are LOADS of US actors, sports, writters, journalists, Democrats, Republicans, rich, poor, black, white, fat, thin, gay , straight, religious, athiest who do not agree but are afraid to open their mouth.

Worth nothing how it took over when we wonder how Natizim took over.

Upthread I said we were saved here by JKR. It was the same here until she stepped.

I enjoy listening to Isabella Malbin who has a series of podcasts on Spotify or can be found on her website:https://www.whosebodyisit.com/.

She describes herself and her podcast thus:

Life-Coach, Hypnotist and Former Liberal Feminist Turned Radical Truth Teller My mission is to help women untangle patriarchal lies, end cycles of self-sabotage, say what we mean and reclaim our reproductive sovereignty.

Whose Body Is It

Whose Body Is It offers tools and coaching to untangle patriarchal lies, end cycles of self-sabotage, say what you mean and birth free.

Oprah and the Obamas have drunk the Kool-Aid, as has Hilary Clinton. Barak Obama is trying to make amends for initially opposing same-sex marriage (by supporting the castration of gay kids 🙄) - not sure what Michelle's stance on that issue was.

JKR, when she finally spoke, set of a massive bomb, and crucially, had the money, the brains and a willingness to fight for her principals.

The USA needs a JKR.

I agree, 4plusthehound. Wonder if anyone will ever step up...

@4plusthehound ah thank you, that did make me giggle, how mortifying for her! I did not know about this. Yes that will have damaged her credibility for sure; however I do agree with a lot of her sentiments on the pandemic strategies.

Someone had mentioned upthread that Naomi wolf is not GC. Wonder if you could provide a link on that as in recent interviews she has been extremely opposed to the transitioning of children and the issue of transwomen in women's sports.

Delphinium20 · 13/06/2023 16:52

They do not cover feminist, progressive objections to sex denial. If they did, the whole thing would fall apart.

This is exactly Kara Dansky's message, "if we can be heard, we will win."

IwantToRetire · 13/06/2023 16:30

Declaration by HRC of a national state of emergency for “LGBTQ+ people.”

The group’s president describes a culture of “violence against LGBTQ+ people, forcing families to uproot their lives and flee their homes in search of safer states, and triggering a tidal wave of increased homophobia and transphobia that puts the safety of each and every one of us at risk.”

The Lesbian Caucus of WDI USA takes issue with HRC’s hyperbolic posturing:
https://karadansky.substack.com/p/hrc-declares-a-state-of-emergency

Not saying this is US wide as I dont live there, but one of the problems is there are some women's groups based in the US who go out of their way to aid and amplify the message that women who are gender critical aren't sufficiently left and are actively encouraging right wing groups. In fact they are more obsessed with telling other women all the ways in which they are wrong instead of presenting a coherent analysis based on their (supremely correct) left wing position. eg https://www.facebook.com/groups/904109420071073/ You could join them and see for yourself. You may find some of them aren't as finger wagging as others.

Naomi Wolf is unfortunately an idiot - as this incident demonstrated (inter alia). She is also a conspiracy theorist - I don't mean being anti-vax, which - though I disagree with it - I wouldn't characterise as being a conspiracy if it arises from health concerns (as opposed to believing that vaccines were microchipping you on the orders of George Soros, or whatever). But she never met a conspiracy theory she didn't like.

Is she GC? Her book, Vagina, was panned by GC critics, including Janice Turner and Suzanne Moore, though admittedly before the TRA movement really got going, so maybe they have found common ground since?

Naomi Wolf accused of confusing child abuse with gay persecution in Outrages

Author’s history of Victorian ‘criminalisation of love’ was heavily criticised on publication in 2019. Now its new, revised edition is also under fire

Yes @NotHavingIt she was, though it didn't take much to get banned from twitter over the last few years.

She is strongly anti the covid vaccines. I have heard her on it. I have some concerns about the massive upswing in miscarriages and still births but would like to hear more about it from people in the medical field before I can have an opinion on that. 🤔

You would no doubt get a vareity of viewpoints if you were permitted a truly wide section of medical opinion. Covid evangelism was strong in the U.S and the resultant banning of dissident voices should surely alert people.
