Ethics over profits.

Fucking hell. The rape of vulnerable women and girls and abuse of staff is ethical, is it?

Oxfam, in my opinion, got off very lightly over that. The organisation should have been closed down then and those who had raped and abused women and girls in Haiti should be in a fucking jail cell IN HAITI.

FromAMNtter nicely put

I receive letters etc from Oxfam because I used to donate. Today I called to tell them I no longer wanted to be reminded of their existence. I explained why and a very understanding man on the phone clearly understood why I was so angry. He said that everything was being fed back to them and I got the impression it was ALL of what I said. I told them that Pride should be a celebration of the fight for equality that gay people had suffered. It was not a place for hate.

FromAMNtter · 06/06/2023 14:33

What they got from me this morning. Will also raise concerns around governance with the Charity Commission

“Dear Oxfam
I have been a monthly gift aid supporter of Oxfam since 1996. I am also a woman who holds the protected belief that sex is immutable and that women should be allowed single sex spaces and same sex relationships without having to accommodate males who identify as women. I believe that there should be separate and equivalent provision for trans people. This is a complex area that requires mature debate to balance the rights of women and trans people. In particular, taking into account women who for reasons of trauma, religion or culture could not share spaces with a biological male and may self exclude if males were allowed in a space or a service.

I would expect Oxfam with its international remit to understand the trauma some women face and the cultural and religious differences that exist in different communities. Would Oxfam expect women who had suffered rape during a war to have to share services with an intact biological male simply because he stated he was a women? If Oxfam was providing services and support in communities where religious or cultural beliefs meant that women and men would not share certain facilities demand that a biological male was allowed into the women's space if he stated he was female?

I feel that this image in your recent Pride Video is directly aimed at women like me. It is demonising us for holding beliefs that have been recognised as protected under the Equality Act 2010 in Forstater v CGD Europe and Others. Furthermore the term TERF has been recognised as derogatory in two separate court cases (in Miller v The College of Policing and others Mr Justice Knowles indicated that it is used by those who wish to deplatform those who hold different views and in Bailey v Stonewall, Garden Court Chambers and others Employment Judge Goodman likened it to a racial slur). The image is misogynistic, ageist and employs crude racial stereotypes. It is deeply offensive and discriminatory.

Pride 2023 | Oxfam International (https://www.oxfam.org/en/pride-2023)
I am incredibly disappointed and upset to see Oxfam vilifying women's concerns in this way especially as those beliefs are protected in law.

If Oxfam does not provide the following I will cancel my donation and find a different international aid organisation to support:-

  1. A full public apology for this offensive image; and
  2. An independent review into the processes that allowed this image to be used in the first place; and
  3. A review of Oxfam's diversity and equality training to ensure that it recognises all protected characteristics and beliefs appropriately; and
  4. Details of the cost of producing this discriminatory video and whether or not supporter donations funded it.”

Withnail being the spiritual father of Bernard Black.

Well having read the vitriol in this thread and on twitter, have to hand it to Oxfam for calling out the anti LGBT hate and standing strong. Ethics over profits. Rare in this say and age. I'll certainly be shopping more there given their inclusion, and I dont feel as a woman excluded. Far from it.

Yay!
let’s support the child rapist enablers

Boiledbeetle · 06/06/2023 14:13

You know @GulesMeansRed the only way they'll change is if you all just stop. They are demonising women who are the backbone of their organisation. Withdraw your labour.

We don't have to politely take this shit. You're volunteers, you're not earning anything. Tell them to fuck off with their misogynist hate b

Agree with this.

Also about to set up direct debits for this and LGB Alliance.

Quoting just because they are excellent suggestions.

Datun · 06/06/2023 13:35

They even changed aspects of it for different markets (no 'Furry Love' tattoo in the UK version).

What the hell? This means they are promoting adult sexual kink??

What the ever loving fuck has that got to do with feeding starving children??

You know you can be a trans ally and still criticise pro-trans organisations when they make mistakes, don’t you, Mishy? So, in the case of Oxfam we have the Haiti scandal, the blaming of feminists for rape, the erasure of women and their language, the vicious pile-on against an Oxfam worker asking why JK Rowling books couldn’t be on sale, and now this Pride video, which features the use of a misogynistic slur (TERF), racist and ageist imagery, the ghoulish celebration of mastectomy scars, and the red-eyed demonisation of women who dare to raise safeguarding concerns and hold beliefs that are protected in law. Very unethical of them.

As a woman, you are cheering for the wrong team, Mishy. They’d throw you under the bus as soon as look at you. No doubt you lap all this stuff up because you think that showing even a whiff of dissent would put paid to your pure, virtuous “ally” status. Wake up and smell the misogyny.

Helleofabore · 06/06/2023 13:22

Oxfam have taken it down everywhere now. But it lives on in the many archived videos.

They significantly screwed this up. There are people complaining from all aspects. That it failed to represent some major groups such as gay men which is very large group. That it was misogynistic and racist with that portrayal of the three evil red eye (shinigami eyes? ).

Whatever Oxfam thought, they really needed to take that ad to focus groups and focus groups outside their LGBT advisory groups. That ad was a massive fail.
