Biggest US children's hospital stops sex-reassignment treatments

The move comes after a whistleblower claimed doctors were scaring parents into letting their kids start puberty blockers and hormones, while racking up medical bills of $80,000 for each patient.

Is it a coincidence that Ken Paxton (Texas AG) has now been impeached?

Ironically, I think medical transitioning will end before surgical, because you can have high-profile class actions against Pharma companies, but not against individual surgeons or hospitals.

A group of a particular hospital's patients can band together for a small class action, but that would only be a few dozen people, whereas large class actions in the States can have thousands of plaintiffs, with settlements running into billions - which is what incentivises lawyers to take them on at risk.

Also, if a judgement goes against a Pharma company or it settles, that will tend to deter all doctors from prescribing the drug, and insurance companies from funding it, whereas litigants against surgeons are likely to sue on individual grounds (failure to consent/complications etc), which won't necessarily have a deterrent effect on other surgeons.

No it won’t be the end. As the head of that hospital says, he’ll be referring children out of state.

Maybe it is a start though.

They will run out of states eventually.

The pace and targets of the rollback of rights in the US is frightening. Women need safe free access to abortion, schools need to be able to talk about sexuality, people with gender dysphoria need safe evidence based support and services where needed (such as psychotherapy). What is happening helps no one.

I can't imagine the absolute horror of being a little child waking up post surgery, it actually makes me feel sick.

I feel sick and heartbroken when I think of autistic young adolescents who locked on to a black and white answer to their puberty distress (adapting to a changing body can be experienced as trauma for autistic girls, from both a sensory perspective and general difficulties with change), which signposted them to change their bodies. They are young and vulnerable - and they are being let down.

It has been known for years that autistic girls often present androgynously, so the fact that so few professionals in autism are screaming about their vulnerability to an incorrect pathway is shocking. Any voices that do are drowned out or hounded of their jobs. So perhaps not that shocking - it's the wider psychology profession that should be ashamed of itself for failing to call out this conflation.

Autistic children are just a part of the picture, but as they represent 48% of referrals to the Tavistock over a 9 year period, I'd say it's a significant enough place where the screaming should be very loud.

CEO of the Center for American Liberty <lawyer> said Kaiser has emerged as a 'repeat player in the growing field of permanently mutilating children for profit.'

well that’s clear!

The only good thing about the speed they have fed some of the kids through from first appointment to breast removal is that rather than the 20/30 year lag you tend to get on medical malpractice on large numbers of people these kids will be getting to the legal stage of the battle much quicker.

I think as this first trench of kids hit their 20s and realise that they've been fucked over this will quickly change the whole field.

While I want it to stop, I don't like to think of the heartbreak of the young people involved 💔

Surely the law only applies if you do damage which wasn’t medically necessary, and doctors wouldn’t be doing that anyway? <innocent face>

weightymatters73 · 25/05/2023 09:55

No, it will take lawsuits from de-transitioners and people physically damaged by the procedures, then it will stop. I'm sure it won't be long though....

''Transgender medicine is hugely lucrative,' said the hospital insider.
'It's like $70,000 to $80,000 dollars per kid if they go through with the whole thing — all the pharmacology drugs, all these companies that are making millions of dollars.''

You don’t get much for $70,000 under American healthcare. I imagine that would just be the start. If anything goes wrong then the costs start to sky rocket. And then there are all the ongoing costs and costs of dealing with future impacts of the treatment. Plus you will be tied to drugs which could very well experience rapid unaffordable increase - look at what has happened with insulin for diabetics.

ArabeIIaScott · 25/05/2023 09:45

And as we've seen here, worth bearing in mind that although some may try to paint this as a left/right issues, it's cross party political. And a tiny number of very determined legislators can push things through - that doesn't mean that it reflects the majority of opinion.

ArabeIIaScott · 25/05/2023 09:44

I had in mind other parents than ones invested in the ideology, though. People get angry about child abuse, even when it's happening to other people's children.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 25/05/2023 09:43

ArabeIIaScott · 25/05/2023 09:33

IDK about lawsuits being what will end this, to be honest.

Once a critical mass of parents realise what is happening, that children are being sterilised and harmed by treatments being rushed through with no good evidence base, we may see a very strong backlash.

As ever, the more these issues come into the sunlight, the more questions are asked, the more it becomes clear that there is no real basis for sterilising or harming children and young people.

And then people get angry.

I'd love to believe that's true, but think how invested you have to be in the ideology, in order to contemplate castrating your own child in the first place.

I think you are right that the climate is becoming easier in some states for sceptical parents to push back against the "better a live trans child than a dead non-trans one" nonsense. But it's patchy - some Blue states are doubling down: from memory, it's Oregon and California that have recently given social services statutory powers to remove children whose parents don't support their transition - previously this was happening sporadically, depending on the individual social workers' attitudes, now it has statutory power.

Unfortunately, the issue is so politically polarised in the US that uncritical support for gender ideology has become an article of faith on the Left.

If they’re not careful they will be left with a patchwork quilt. You can live in a state with no medical transitioning but no abortion or one where abortions are available but they’re desperate to perform medical transitioning procedures on your child.

liberal but sensible doesn’t seem to be an option.

Indeed, the United States seems to be on a pathway towards becoming the. 'Disunited States'.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 25/05/2023 09:39

I don't know. Americans can't even get angry and organise properly when their drinking water is poisoned by big industry such as happened by Dupont in Ohio/West Virginia and in Flint with the lead. When there's a lot of money at stake in America, people's objections just get ignored in favour of the person with the money doing whatever they want, and in this case the people with the money are those with a vested interest in profiting off little boys naturally wanting to wear dresses and little girls naturally wanting to climb trees, and medicalising it.
I can't imagine the absolute horror of being a little child waking up post surgery, it actually makes me feel sick.

I think US laws have limitations on bringing lawsuits for health stuff? We know it takes years to work through the process of transition with temporary relief at each stage, so by the time detransitioners are aware that they have been chasing a mirage that has left them very harmed they have timed out on the ability to bring law suits?

I think you're right - it can be as little as two years. It's very difficult too because the notorious Dr Sidhbh Gallagher, for one, has opted out of medical malpractice insurance. What this means is that there's no point in suing her because she won't be able to afford to pay - and therefore lawyers won't take on cases against her. I expect the same is true of other doctors.

It's a mad situation, really. We assume the US is full of people taking out medical malpractice suits all the time, but it's harder than it sounds. And the laws vary from state to state.

Varies by state, but the clock usually starts when you become aware of the harm, not when the harm occurred (if different).

No it won’t be the end of medical transition of children. This has come about due to a change in the law in that state. Doctors in other states will not follow suit unless they are forced. Sadly this looks to become something that is banned in Republican states and encouraged in Democrat states who are going so far as to offer “sanctuary” to children from states who are banning doctors from offering such “treatments”.

Agree. Ironically, it's legally risky for hospitals to stop offering transition at this point, unless forced to do so by legislators, because to stop would be a tacit admission of wrong-doing. Class actions by detransitioners are already in the pipeline; hospitals won't want to give them ammunition.

It's litigation that will eventually stop the medical/surgical transitioning of minors in the US, but I reckon we are a decade away. A single class action isn't going to do it. However, already, there is more questioning and the US public are waking up to the harms, so hopefully the rate at which children are being damaged will slow down.

Until the cost of lawsuits is bigger than the income from medicalisation, nothing will change.

Disgraceful but true. For once, I’m longing for money-hungry lawyers to get on the case.
