"BOOM!

Statement by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem.

ohchr.org/sites/default/…

It is unequivocal in condemning the silencing, harassment and failure to protect women and girls for raising questions about gender identity."

Fantastic news!

Wonderful to see.

Remember when Baroness Faulkner released the statement about how it was not transphobic for women to discuss the areas where rights for other groups conflicted with theirs? And we breathed a little easier and discussions progressed because we were no longer in the cyclical ‘you are all hateful bigots’ accusations blocking any progress at all? This feels like a similar moment. Like there is permission now at UN level for discussions to progress.

Well, I hope so. At least she is a voice of sanity.

Must say the TRAs do seem a teeny bit rattled.

I think it's because every time they do a head tilt, their little brains clatter against the insides of their skulls.

😂😍😂

An excellent statement.

My only gripe is her use of the confusing term "Global North", which counterintuitively does include Australia and NZ but at first glance appears to let them off the hook.

Also, for those wondering if this statement has an impact - you can gauge the importance of it directly by how vicious the backlash is.

It's a perfect object lesson.

UN expert in VAWG makes a statement about women being smeared, attacked and denigrated for speaking up on 'gender' issues.

And ...

They never fail to show their true selves and their true intentions.

Well I think it can only help that the people pushing genderism or whatever they want to call it are posting the most ludicrous hyperbolic batshit out loud, on the account of a UN expert.

It's certainly going to throw some of the more unhinged assertions into the sunlight.

'women's rights are fascism' - that'll show 'em!

So let's celebrate it getting an airing.

😍😍😍

Textbook example of institutional capture.

Um, "woman's rapporteur dealing with women's rights" is someone doing their job.

Unlike, say, a formerly gay rights organisation supporting genderism over homosexuals...

Women's rapporteur is supposed to be concerned with the rights of males who feel womanly. Keep up.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/05/2023 21:12

Sturgeon called her "the person from the UN" if I remember rightly.

She did, and RA put it in her Twitter bio. Grin

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 22/05/2023 21:11

Given the two experts have very different views, how will this play out? Which one will be listened to I wonder?

In Scotland only Victor Madrigal-Borloz got listened to, mainly because he told the government what they wanted to hear, that there was going to be no problem at all for women and girls. He got to speak twice. Reem Alsalem only got to speak once and that was right at the last minute. If they'd paid attention to what she said then the Scottish government could have avoided one of their debacles.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/05/2023 21:09

Textbook example of institutional capture.^^@UNSRVAW
is not fit to hold her position as a UN special rapporteur.'

Huge DARVO.

ArabeIIaScott · 22/05/2023 21:07

Well, the first tweet responding to the UN's perfectly illustrates Alsalem's points about smearing women with insinuations:

'From all those who you consider your friends on this argument, you may want to take a long hard look at where their finances are coming from. If you think the Alliance Defending Freedom is the way forward, then you're with those who wish to remove access to abortion from women.'

A few more, for those who can't access Twitter:

'And the ones branded genocidal LITERALLY said that transgender people "are a huge problem in a sane world" and should "have their numbers reduced".'

'The worldwide anti gender campaign, of which these attacks on trans people’s existing rights are only one part, is a massive threat to women’s rights too. Pretending otherwise is politically motivated propaganda.'

'These days you can't even have Nazis repeatedly turn up to your events to support you without being called a Nazi'

'You mean protect the right of transphobes to be transphobic.@UNSRVAW
is an adherent of “gender critical” ideology, which is trans-eliminationist.'

'You only need to look at who she follows: anti-trans hate groups and transphobic trolls. Textbook example of institutional capture.@UNSRVAW
is not fit to hold her position as a UN special rapporteur.'

'@UNSRVAW, an advocate for the elimination of trans people from society, is not fit for the position and is a threat to the rights of women and girls'

''Women & girls' includes trans women & girls They too have the right to speak on sex, gender, & #genderidenity without intimidation or fear, & on the threats against their existence by those who attempt to deny them the safety of female spaces & services'

'Incredibly dishonest framing. If these people cared about women and girls they'd have moved on to actual problems rather than harassing trans people daily. It's a fascist hate movement wearing the skin of a feminist organization and it isn't feminist or progressive.'

I think that gives you a flavour. There are also many supportive responses.

KohlaParasaurus · 22/05/2023 20:58

Encouraging statement, and so reasonable that the spluttering responses look all the more deranged.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 22/05/2023 20:52

From the elation I felt when I first saw this thread, I now feel saddened. I don’t think it will change a thing because males are still in charge of our society and they have no ‘skin’ in this game. They don’t give a f@ck - because it’s not their rights being eroded.

‘Hey women - be happy because a biological male has beat you in cycling (but you must celebrate their feminine side), women be accepting of males on your prison wings (you’re a prisoner, no one cares about you so we’ll push the boundaries of acceptance here).

Women - if you object we will deploy our male bullying and violent techniques to silence you. ‘

OMG - I used to be part of the ‘be kind’ brigade. Absolutely no more. I’m done with being kind. I’m fighting for my rights.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 22/05/2023 20:41

if gender loons want to go full out batshit in reply to a UN press release, that is indeed a good thing in my opinion

it just hurts my head

Good idea to send to MPs.

Twitter responses are predictable. Alsalem is accused of 'overt bigotry'.

it's fascistnazihatespeech, I believe.

Women's rights are dogwhistles for the US Xtian right.

To paraphrase.

WTAF?

This is so screwed up. I can’t believe the misogyny just goes so unnoticed.

ArabeIIaScott · 22/05/2023 20:21

worldwide anti gender campaign

It's quite interesting, because one could say this was a rather bland way of describing many of feminism's aims. To examine, criticise and question 'gender', otherwise known as 'sex stereotypes'.

And seems a tacit admission that genderism is all about upholding, reinforcing, and reifying gender (stereotypes).
