Trans hockey player injures teenage girl in Scotland

Oli London has retweeted a Reduxx article and added:

The incident occurred at Monarch Hockey Club in Scotland where the male, who was described as being built like a ‘rugby player’, reportedly tackled a girl to the ground leaving her with neck, hip and arm injuries.
The game had to be halted while the injured girl was removed from the field.

The official guidance from Scottish Hockey (SH), the sport’s governing body, explicitly states that participation on teams should be based entirely on gender self-identification.
“Hockey is a non-contact sport and SH sanctions men’s, mixed and women’s hockey competitions; as such there are no evidenced safety concerns for any trans male or female wishing to take part in sanctioned hockey competitions, in training or friendly/recreational hockey.

Have any of them ever played hockey?
It seemed to me while playing it as a child that it was full of aggressive contact with sticks and hard balls.

A non contact sport? That requires shin pads and mouth guards??

Do you know the damage a hockey ball can do?

I played Mixed Hockey at University. We (the female players) were considered maniacs by the Rugby team and far too scary!.

You weren't forced to play mixed hockey though - you had a choice.

Well done Nicola.

State sanctioned violence against women. Bet the men’s rights activists that promote this are spunking into their pants with glee at a girl getting injured.

Because this is what this is. Make no mistake about this. Whatever purposely confusing words are uttered in the name of “trans rights”.

Yes, sadistic violence against women perpetrated by males

Whatwouldscullydo · 13/05/2023 11:31

Things like this just prove its not about access to sports. There are mixed teams the male player could join. They always go for the womens. NB male- womens
Trans male- womens. Tolestosterone taking females- womens. Women get fucked over every way possible

We have mens teams and anyone who doesn't want to play with mens teams.

Its about removing women from having anything at all.

When I was at school I was on the hockey team. We had a boy allowed to play at practice ( not matches) i still remember the massive bruise akd the pain from.taking a hockey ball hed hit to the shin.

Dammitthisisshit · 13/05/2023 11:28

I played at school. Unless the rules have changed (it was decades ago):

If the ball hits above the knee then it’s a foul from whoever sent the ball up, but it happened fairly regularly as if 2 players go in for it you don’t have control. Concussion wasn’t that uncommon. If it hits below the knee it’s counted as a foul against the player that it hit (as it’s a foul to kick the ball). Therefore it was a common tactic to hit the ball as hard as you could at calf height - if it ‘accidentally’ hit someone on the opposite team you won a free hit. Very hard hits to the ankles were very common.

@PaleBlueMoonlight as it stands I see no reason why a ‘mixed’ hockey team couldn’t be 11 biological males

this^

kethuphouse · 13/05/2023 11:23

Non contact my arse. Tell that to my tooth that went flying after a hockey stick made contact with it.

elgreco · 13/05/2023 10:51

I've played hockey. Technically it's non contact but in reality it's not, people run into each when tackling and can hit each other accidentally on purpose.

Agree, there was a horrible (and very large - not fat, but bulky) girl I sometimes played against who literally bulldozed. And a tackle when there is a big power imbalance makes it feel like a contact sport.

ChateauMargaux · 13/05/2023 11:19

@Theeyeballsinthesky ... thank you for the explanation of the mixed hockey rules.

Without knowing the details of the infraction it seems wrong that if a foul was given as described in the article that the offending player was not also carded.

The key to arguing against the inclusion of this player in a female team is in competitive fairness as set out in the guiding principles of the Equality in Sport document.

Mixed hockey exists and I do not believe that there is a will in the sport to remove mixed hockey.

Scoldsidol · 13/05/2023 11:14

Who played against that team? Did THEY have a male bodied athlete on their team too? Did they know the opposition did? Of course you’re going to get ‘everyone gets injuries from hockey, blaming it on the fact that this person was trans is transphobic’ But we know don’t we? We know and they know it’s not fucking fair.

I would be tempted to sue the powers that be that allowed this to happen. Not the trans individual themselves but the facilitating body that believes it’s fair to put a male-bodied person in a team of girls/women in a sport where collisions are likely and where the extra speed and power is an advantage. Did some of their matches get played at St Andrews Uni? Some SERIOUSLY rich (American) parents there who could rustle up the funds for a legal challenge. And a Radical Feminist Group based there apparently that seems to be garnering support from the women who aren’t happy with the way things are going for women in these fucking insane times.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 13/05/2023 11:13

Mumsnet, stop deleting my posts calling men men and expressing my concern for womens safety.

SkiingIsHeaven · 13/05/2023 11:10

He's not even trying to look like a woman. He's just a ringer for the team, surely.

Having played hockey and been quite aggressive on the pitch I would not say that it's a non-contact sport. I definitely would not have fancied my chances against him.

I once broke someone’s nose in hockey. Totally accidental- we were both head down going for the ball and her nose collided with my forehead. If I was a man with the extra weight and power I could have knocked her unconscious.

No way would I allow my daughter to play against TW.

YoucancallmeKAREN · 13/05/2023 10:56

Chewbecca · 13/05/2023 10:05

It IS a non contact sport.
But sometimes players do collide and men tend to hit the ball harder than women.
Some women won't play mixed for the above reasons but are now being forced to.

Women need to stop being forced too. Every woman needs to walk out onto the pitch, field or arena, line up for the start wait for the whistle then every single woman that is having to compete or play with these blokes needs to walk off. If this was done world wide every time the governing bodies would soon do the right thing.

I still have a scar on my knee from being hit by a stick in my school days, I maybe should have had stitches or something rather than Dad and a bowl of warm Dettol though. 😂

When at school I played against a future England player, playing against a male would have been a whole different level.

Basically a mixed hockey team has to be 5 men, 5 women and a GK either sex

penalty flicks have to be taken by a woman
and in a penalty corner first hot must be by a woman

the Game referenced above would most likely have had 2 female umpires. I wonder what they thought of it & also what the hockey insurers think of it….

Is it permitted for the women in the mixed team to be men?

KalimbaMoon · 13/05/2023 10:51

Hockey is brutal - as I recall from my schooldays.

elgreco · 13/05/2023 10:51

I agree that it seems ridiculous to declare that hockey is ‘non contact’. Even the best players can sometimes crash into others and may hit a ball high.

For those playing mixed sex hockey, is there a difference in rule’s between playing all female and mixed sex?
