Mark Drakeford, First Minister Wales: women's concerns a 'shrill dogwhistle'

This is the man who went to Swansea Pride the other week and talked solely about trans, ignoring the LGB completely.

Today he accused a member of the Senedd voicing concerns brought to him by her constituents of being shrill and using a dogwhistle.

Those of you who don't live in Wales probably have no idea how untouchable Labour feels itself to be. It's been in office for more than 20 years and if things keep going the way they are now, it'll be another 20 years before they're challenged. We're living in a one-party state. There is no equivalent of the House of Lords, no one to check their arrogance.

Gives me no pleasure to confirm this is true.

It's like the SNP were before they imploded.
The arrogance is exactly the same as the SNPs. Anyone who doesn't think the same way as them deserves to be ignored and shamed.
Labour in Wales could put up a piano as a candidate for election and it would win.

RealityFan · 09/05/2023 20:51

MNers have been debating the virtues of voting Labour. Or LD, Green. Or indeed any party to try and correct the reckless course the Tories have misdirected us on for nigh on 13 years, 14 by the time of the GE.

Will Starmer bring in Self ID? Will he capitulate to the TRAs amongst his activists, MPs and front bench? Will he stand firm in the kind of gender critical way we'd all love, or just wilt?

Well, with the SNP and Welsh Labour, and in a smaller way, the Greens in Brighton, having been in their own ascendancies for well over a decade, nearly two, we don't have to look very far to see where a Starmer Labour govt will take us.

Indeed with Starmer's quote in the Guardian that woke issues are beneath his notice, we have more evidence that there isn't gonna be a happy ending here.

If I didn't despise trans politics so much, I'd admire the tenacity and success of their campaign. Via mendacious tactics, the likes of Dentons and Stonewall have literally implanted the irreversible and irresistible direction of travel within centrist/Leftist political parties in the West, and more and more Rightist ones too.

So that today, the leader of a major party can bald faced say to another politician, on being questioned in their parliament, that women's and kid's concerns are a dog whistle. In other words that this woman is the 2023 equivalent of an NF and BNP racist from the 70s and 80s, and that highlighting concerns on trans access to women's prisons, sports, and safe spaces, is the equivalent of Tommy Robinson using the N-word.

And whatever polling they're doing, it's showing that Drakeford and Starmer and the like are so confident of ultimate electoral victory that they can both trample on women's and girls' genuine concerns.

If I had any lingering doubts about voting Labour ever, they're put to bed.

What is it they say? If a person tells you who they are (over and over again), believe them.

Shrill? Of all fucking things?

eurochick · 09/05/2023 20:27

Outrageous misogyny. AngryAngryAngry

SueVineer · 09/05/2023 20:22

Misogynist

SunnyEgg · 09/05/2023 20:20

Labour are going to do this from now on aren’t they

Try to rubbish any questions and concerns from women

It’s so concerning where we are headed

EarthSight · 09/05/2023 20:19

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 09/05/2023 19:50

yup, this

they're not getting my vote

This. What a misogynist man he is.

EarthSight · 09/05/2023 20:16

'Shrill'.

That's what women's rights are. Shame on him.

Alwaystheweather · 09/05/2023 20:15

He’s dismissive, but what makes it so unpleasant is that he’s accusing her of raising something that no “decent” person would, and he is dripping with contempt

Yup, but what's so disturbing and disgusting about it is that he is dismissive, dripping with contempt, angry and attacking, yet can't articulate what it is that she has done that is wrong, to deserve such an attack. Its a laser sharp display of pure misogynistic entitlement to hate and dismiss women.

Alwaystheweather · 09/05/2023 20:10

Shrill, Jesus Christ! That man is a disgusting misogynist.

And what a typical TRA response from him. Can't answer the reasonable questions so results to angry name calling instead.

The hypocrisy of the man. She asked her question calmly and reasonably, he answers angrily, throws in comparisons to racism and yet accuses her of being shrill and dog whistling.

dropthevipers · 09/05/2023 20:05

I think you're right
like he's saying "I can accuse you of being transphobic, racist and totally get away with it because you dare to be a woman and talk about women".

JaneorEleven · 09/05/2023 20:02

What a twat. He forgot to squeeze in the word “hysterical” to his berating lecture.

Dwrcegin · 09/05/2023 20:00

...telling me that my party doesn't understand the priorities of people in Wales...

Truth hurts, Drakeford. Especially when Women are doing the telling.

FigRollsAlly · 09/05/2023 19:56

EmmaEmerald · 09/05/2023 19:49

There is something really deeply unpleasant about that clip, not just that he doesn't see it as an important question, but something else I can't quite identify.

Not just a dog whistle, but a shrill one. Because uterus people are shrill old hags.

this is what Labour really think. They’re emboldened by last week’s wins and the mask has slipped instantly.

Thank you. First Minister, it pains me to have to keep asking you something that is clearly a priority of yours and your Government's, but it is not a priority of the people of Wales when we have a failing NHS, educational outcomes that you cannot be proud of and a housing crisis. But what you're focusing on has such a significant impact on half the population of Wales, I have to ask you, First Minister, I know it's hard to keep up with the amount of flip-flopping Sir Keir Starmer does, but which statement from your UK Labour leader do you agree with? Do you agree that biological men can be women and, therefore, enter vulnerable women-only spaces, changing rooms, and participate in women-only sports, or do you agree with his statement that biological women and girls' rights should not be rolled back, and, therefore, you'll be rewriting your LGBTQ action plan, dropping your gender recognition reform plans and constructing fact-based sex education in our schools to reflect that?

09/05/2023 14:05:26 / Mark Drakeford MS / First Minister of Wales
Llywydd, I'm simply not going to get drawn into the shrill and deliberately divisive debate that the Member continuously attempts to raise on the floor of this Senedd. Did she not see that her party lost over 1,000 seats in the elections in England last week? I don't think it's wise of her to come here telling me that my party doesn't understand the priorities of people in Wales. Your party absolutely has lost any credibility it may ever have had on that basis. The Member and people like her spent the whole of April trying to raise these dog-whistle concerns and found, as I would have been confident of all along, that people out there have a much greater sense of decency than the Conservative Party ever attributes to them. They are not interested in attacks on trans people, they are not interested in attacks on black people, they are not interested in attacks on asylum seekers—exactly the sort of agenda that the Member herself pursues and her party pursues. Don't come here and tell me that I don't understand people's priorities when you pursue an agenda that is designed exclusively to divide people, when our job should be to try and unite people in pursuit of basic decencies.

Misogyny Bingo

bellinisurge · 09/05/2023 19:35

This needs replay on loop at the next election. And every politician needs to be asked if they condemn this language.

Wanker

Pluvia · 09/05/2023 19:35

It's the same Conservative member to whom Labour's Hannah Blythn was exceptionally rude in February:

https://twitter.com/LauraJ4SWEast/status/1622985492781232129?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

In watching that I've just noticed Jane Hutt, once a leading feminist in Wales, sitting shaking her head in a condemnatory fashion while Blythyn talks down to another woman.

This is how people without a leg to stand on behave. Insults, patronising remarks and mugging. Even in our Senned the TRAs can find absolutely nothing to defend themselves with beyond trying to shame or humiliate women. I will not vote Labour while this behaviour is condoned.
