Austin Killips won the Tour of the Gila women's race www.cyclingnews.com/races/tour-of-the-gila-2023/stage-5-women/results/
Just outrageous. Any tweet by the organisers mentioning Killips has restricted comments (but of course many quote tweets)
It's getting more and more ridiculous:

  • the rider retained their original male first name, Austin.
  • they rode for the Amy D Foundation, set up to encourage and support young women through cycling, inspiring the celebration of healthy challenge and empowering the confident pursuit of lofty dreams.
  • this is the first year the women's prize money is the same as the men's.
You couldn't make it up. When will the most sports-loving country in the world protect and give a shit about women in sport?

Having seen Riley trapped in a room full of apparently too scared to do anything police, with a screaming mob of nutcases outside demanding for her to be handed over so they can tear her limb from limb?

It would take immense courage for her team mates to stand up and go 'come be terrifyingly insanely violent at me too'. However this is what it is going to take. Which is why I have such immense respect for the women who go to LWS events because they know the risks they are taking.

There is no need for the women to boycott. They could:

  • all agree to hold their own prize ceremony after the official one with the correct top 3
  • they could refuse to acknowledge the name cyclist during the race and at prize giving
  • they found all purposely go slow and finish as a group together
  • they could get off and walk a short distance - anything basically to let the man win by miles
  • they could hand their medals back

That said it would need everyone to agree and participate, it's easy to ban one person but not a whole group

And they then get singled out as transphobic, not just their careers in sport at risk, but the careers that put food on the table, contracts terminated for being hateful.

Why do you think Lia Thomas teammates stayed quiet? They were all told their applications to study at Ivy League and other colleges were at risk, they would be turned down at interview stage...boom, career over.

Only now is Riley Gaines making a stand. And despite this, her former teammates still stay quiet or only complain anonymously.

Looking at our favourite cycling MN plopper on Twitter, apparently us women have no interest in cycling and are also too stupid to understand that in cycling GC stands for General Classification, so we’re getting all furious about nothing.

I think some people live in their own little woke bubbles and don’t have a fucking clue just how much women (and plenty of men) are getting more and more furious about males taking women’s opportunities, victories and prize money.

As far as I can tell all Austin did to race in the women's race was grow long hair and have a long dangly earring when racing. I've often found it really practical to have long dangly earrings when cycling, don't you all agree, cycling ladies?

What a lovely looking group of women! Maybe they're born wi...oh wait 😮

I don’t think any gender ideologists think of impact on women

Same goes for a Green MP defending self ID this morning

It is wholly centred on men

I think the reason this stuff has gained such purchase and influenced decision makers to the extent it has is that finally MRAs have found a way to present white, able bodied, heterosexual, biological male humans as the most oppressed group and have everyone centre everything around them in the name of ‘social justice’.

It's been an educational experience to learn how various sports authorities have simply not included female athletes in any of the discussions about transgender inclusion during the past decades they considered various solutions.

It's as if the problem was initially defined in such a way that those who are stakeholders do not include female athletes, so the negative consequences for them are reduced to some quick muttering about 'fairness' while column space in articles has been spent elaborating on the difficulties and struggles of transwomen in sports.

And even now this continues, with the assumption that the female athletes should do something to fix the problem and if they don't, they approve of the takeover of their sports. Never mind what happened to Riley Gaines, say, when she did stand up.

#Nepeta, as a member said in another thread, women is a really unfortunate, imprecise, ambiguous term, worse than useless really, but ABSOLUTELY TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN...so of course the cycling federations would ignore women other than TW.

And this is the result. As an argument, it's both condescending to the point of absolute insult, yet a steel trap, resulting in this total shambles.

But if you're gonna consciously downgrade women yet only listen the the TW who claim they're women...

Truthlikeness · 01/05/2023 18:21

The issue with boycotts is that unless the vast majority of women do it, it makes no difference at all, and unfortunately the majority of women won't do it because of the very real fear of being branded transphobic. If Josephine Bloggs boycotts a race/game, everyone else carries on as normal and Josephine has to give up the sport they love.

The only one I'm aware of that's made a difference was the threatened boycott that prevented Emily Bridges from racing. The two key things about that one were the extremely high profile nature of those proposing the boycott (Laura Kenny's name was speculated) and the fact they remained anonymous.

I think the only way change will come is from sports increasingly being dominated by a few transwomen, which will cause enough of a public outcry that sporting federations are forced to change their rules to exclude males from female competition. This is happening in some sports already, but others will be much slower to recognise it as a problem. Some may never do so.

Fizbosshoes · 01/05/2023 17:41

I'm aggrieved at the idea of female athletes having to boycott events or pull out of competitions to make their point, potentially forgoing their own sponsorship and prize money opportunities.

Only 1% sports sponsorship money (iirc) goes to women and doing fewer competitions is only going to make things worse. Added to that most sports people have a pretty short career (more complicated for actual women as it often overlaps the ideal biological window for having children) so pulling out of events when in peak form and have trained specifically for that is going to be very detrimental

All of this. It isn't fair to expect women to miss out in order to fix a problem not of their making.

Yes - well done to Marcela Prieto for winning this race.

Perhaps the male competitors could help. They could refuse to compete in the equivalent men's event if there's a cheating man in the women's event.

I'd be up for that. The silence from male athletes on this is deafening.

OldCrone · 01/05/2023 17:29

RealityFan · 01/05/2023 16:58

I'm 200% with you, but I'm unsure what short of direct action will have an effect. It seems the governing boards, unlike athletics, swimming, rugby etc, just won't take testimony from women.

SquidwardBound · 01/05/2023 17:06

Maybe some women’s rights groups could actually award prize money and medals/trophies to the women who really deserve them when they’re displaced by biological males.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/05/2023 17:00

Is anyone keeping a record of the actual winners of these races (the non-cheating actual women) and published it on Twitter?
It may be poor compensation but it should be clarified at every point.

Shame on America! How can they allow this? It is embarrassing.

You clearly haven't sacrificed a million things all through your life in order to be at the peak of your performance in your sport only to, on the day, step aside, be called a bigot and watch as a man wins anyway. DON'T MAKE IT WOMEN'S FAULT.

rockpoolingtogether · 01/05/2023 16:48

Cheat. No morals. Disgusting.
Quote from a former competitor:

"I have decided to end my cycling career," Arensman said. "My sister and family sobbed as they watched a man finish in front of me, having witnessed several physical interactions with him during the race. I feel for young girls learning to compete, who no longer have a fair chance at being the new record-holders and champions in cycling because men want to compete in our division."

This would get sorted in a nano second. All women should pull out of events where men are allowed to walk (or ride, run, swim, lift etc) all over them, all spectators should stay at home.

Let the shit hit the fan and see what happens next.

Despite women feeling this is out of their hands, ironically it's very much in women's hands.
