Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My local councilor just laughed in my face

Just that.

He was canvassing the area, I had previously had email correspondence with him where I asked him 'What is a woman' and he gave me a reply about all discrimination is wrong.

So I tried to engage him on the doorstep, he laughed and told me to 'have a conversation with someone else'.

So I looked up the code of conduct for councilors, apparently they have a duty to represent the view of all in their ward. I don't think he can do that.

Then I found out that the council code of conduct doesn't include 'sex' in it's equality blurb.

I dont think its a "non issue" if the people aspiring to run the country tell you to your face batshit mental things and ask you to take them seriously on anything else.

Also, if it's such a non-issue, then the progressives should just stop with their nonsense and agree that you can't change sex.

Then it can't be used as a "distraction" as they like to claim.

It's apparently important to progressives. But then suddenly it's a "distraction" if anyone picks them up on it. Just apologise for saying TWAW and then we can all move on to other issues!

I really worry that people are 'focused' on this non-issue - and missing other issues- like - decent wages, investment in our health care, education and police

It really feels like the the whole 'what is a woman' argument is being used to 'avoid the above issues that really impact on our daily lives, and the future of the country.

This is a council election so things like funding the NHS do not come in to it. As for wages, education and police well this issue is important to all of that.

If you or your child is arrested and searched possibly including a strip search and a cavity search do you want the searcher to be the same biological sex?

What do you want teaching in schools? Do you want your child being told there are 50 genders and they can change sex? Do you have single sex schools where you live? If so do you want to keep them?

Wages - how can you measure the pay gap between men and women if you do not knop what a woman is?

And other things the council provide on contribute to, women's swimming sessions, rape crisis centres, children's services...

This issue impacts all of life.

I’d be fucking incensed. I can’t stand Labour. Honestly CAN’T STAND them. I’d rather take a shit on my ballot paper than vote for them.

I feel the same way about the current Conservstive Government we have

Silly and totally pointless. It isn't a protest.

It's a perfectly valid unmistakeable protest, in a way that voting for your least hated person isn't at all.

The whole power of voting is in numbers. If enough dissatisfied people were willing to spoil their papers, it would give the message loud and clear. Imagine if there were 100,000 votes available, with only pitiful candidates to choose from, and 65,000 of them were spoiled. That would make it crystal clear that, whoever won, they were not the electorate's choice.

Votes should be earned by being a great candidate in your own right; not gained by default because you're slightly less woeful than somebody else.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 01/05/2023 00:47

I sent mine back spoiled with Adult Human Female written across it.
I choose to return a paper. I can't vote for any of the candidates. And the party I was a member of does ask that you haven't voted for a different party when you join. I have hope that they'll see the light and when I rejoin, I'll be able to confirm I didn't vote for anyone else.

Precipice · 01/05/2023 00:36

Did anyone call you to discuss your spoiled ballot? Did they bother to ask why you did it, did they talk about the intricate designs you spent your time doodling on the ballot paper?

That would be outrageous. The ballot is supposed to be secret and it would be deeply wrong to pursue individual voters in this manner. Although indeed, possible, since the ballot paper is numbered and you are also numbered on the electoral roll.

Needmoresleep · 01/05/2023 00:31

To clarify a bit (it’s all been such a whirl that I am still formulating my thoughts). Luxury politics would include gender/pronouns etc as well as the bike lanes beloved by one of my independent opponents.

If you need social services support for your elderly parent, or your flat to be maintained to a good quality (I am being shown some shockers) you surely have to query a party that makes a fuss about TWAW.

I hope Rishi sticks to his clear women do not have penises, and ensuring legislation and guidance match, and then moves on to more important issues like the impact of the cost of living crises on so many people.

Needmoresleep · 30/04/2023 23:57

I am standing, and exhausted. There should be a word for “fear of letter boxes”. I have delivered so many leaflets I see letter boxes in my sleep. Especially the nightmare low ones with thick bristles and an inner flap.

My slightly mad idea is that normal sensible people need to get involved. I could not face a local Labour Party full of student type militant activists so picked the Tories, only to discover that local Conservative parties seem to have their own version of Bennite ideologues. Some members of both parties don’t seem to realise that people don’t owe them votes, they need to earn them.

On the campaign trail it’s pretty obvious that people are not happy with the alternatives at National level. Lots say they won’t vote. Some say they will vote ‘independent’ though in fact the independents are a pretty mixed bag.

Noone likes Boris, but then no one has much positive today about Keir. If Rishi keeps his head down and gets to grips with things people support, like controlling this gender madness, he might be able to present himself as the more palatable alternative.

The ward is quite urban and quite mixed. I will lose. Oddly I will lose because the better off can afford to vote on niche issues, bike lanes etc. Politics as a hierarchy of needs, and people who have scope for luxury interests.

I am doing better in social housing. It appears that I am the first candidate in living memory to canvass the tower blocks. Someone commented that I was brave, as I knocked on their door brandishing my Tory leaflets. These are people with real needs, but no one is listening. Certainly not Labour. People do seem willing to believe that I, with my aspirations to be a good ward councillor might be their best hope in helping them get the basic services they need.

We save politics not by waiting for politicians to listen to us, but by a sort of centrist entryism. If ordinary people become active, the local parties will change and become less extreme and more listening. We don’t need a new party. We need to change the ones we have.

I have only had the “What is a Woman” question once. From a man. I gave the right answer. My impression is that Keirs stance is not helping him. People are aware of the issue. I find it amazing that Labour candidates are feigning ignorance.

Tanith · 30/04/2023 23:48

So, then! All those who say they nobly spoiled their ballots in past elections.

What happened, exactly?

Did anyone call you to discuss your spoiled ballot? Did they bother to ask why you did it, did they talk about the intricate designs you spent your time doodling on the ballot paper?
What exactly did it achieve? Did it further your cause in any way, shape or form?

No, of course it didn't. They just included your spoiled ballot in the total number of other spoiled ballots and that was that, wasn't it?

No-one's telling you how to vote, or what to do with your ballot paper. They're simply pointing out that all that matters in an election is the result and no-one will care two hoots why you spoiled your ballot.

Pixiedust1234 · 30/04/2023 23:40

I'm quite lucky that my local councillors actually work hard for the city, ie potholes, parks, litter bins, libraries etc. The little things in life that make it nicer to live where I am. Most of the city councillors are either working hard for their wards or trying desperately to look as though they aren't taking backhanders. National politics don't seem to register with them so I know I will be voting Lib Dem this time....but it will be a different matter for the GE, probably spoiling the ballet as I really can't stomach voting Tory. It will be interesting as we had a strong Labour MP for years who is now retiring.

Interesting times for sure.

Parisj · 30/04/2023 23:39

Who exactly do you suggest I vote for rather than spoil my ballot when they are all (the main parties - we have no independents standing) a shower of shit.

This is exactly the sort of guilt-tripping and shaming I’m talking about. “Women, be kind! Think about other people’s needs, not about your own! Vote against your sex’s best interests because Labour is in other people’s best interests!”

No, I don’t think so. I’m going to vote according to my conscience. Protecting women’s rights is my number one priority.

It's a bit like the whole 'wheesht for Indy' bullshite up here in Scotland.

No. I won't fucking wheesht.

Lolaandbehold · 30/04/2023 23:10

One of my finest moments of recent years is that I peaked my local councillor. She didn’t know anything about the current threats to women’s rights. She does now. She champions them passionately.

My top 4 aligned parties all believe in gender woo. Leaving the Tories in 5th. No wonder I'm politically homeless

Me too. WEP, Labour, Greens, Lib Dems and Conservative last. So depressing.

I didn't even know spoiled ballets were a thing.

I don't actually understand our political system very well. Is there a beginner guide to politics people recommend? I did some research but got distracted by the social history retained no useful information.

All I know is locally people say the conservative seat it secure. No point voting. I've never had anyone knock on my door to discuss policy or anything like that only Jehovah witnesses knock on my door to talk.

I remember one lesson on politics at schoool and the teacher said the left and the right are basically the same. I didn't understand anything else he said.

I feel like I should understand more than I do. As pp saying women fought for the right to vote. I should address my ignorance but when you look it's so full of jargon. I don't even keep the left and the right straight in my head because I'm dyslexic and ADHD and muddle that sort of stuff.

If I were you I would be writing to the local party to let them know how their canvassers are treating potential voters. This fight will be won with a load of small, incremental push backs.

ArabeIIaScott · 30/04/2023 20:46

If Labour continue with their current bullshit treatment of women and women's rights I can assure you I will do all in my power to ensure they never see Government again.

If this was a General Election would you all still not vote Labour and allow this shxte load of Conservatives to continue destroying the UK? Just asking.

I want to vote in the next GE, but if Labour don't drop this nonsense, then it won't be for them.

Apparently we're getting at least one independent candidate, so I may vote for them. Or, hopefully, KJK's PoW may field a candidate.

I won't be voting for any party which believes in gender-woo. As is my democratic right.

Too late I have a postal vote - spoiled ballots have to be looked at.

They do, yes. By a small handful of people at the count. At the end of a long and tiring process, where the focus is on who is going to win the overall vote - not the words someone has written on their ballot paper. Then they are locked into sealed packets and never looked at, or spoken of, again.

I understand why people spoil their ballots - but please remember that doing so makes little to no difference to anything - it doesn't reduce the margin for the winning candidate and it doesn't get a message across as hardly anyone sees it, let alone pay attention to it or remember it.
