I've posted this before but terfyn is Welsh for, among other things, boundary.

😮

Boiledbeetle · 27/04/2023 21:54

I have had many conversations in real life over the past year where from the outset I've said "before I start, I'm a terf " maybe it's my scary personality but I've not had one single problem. But that may be more my resting bitch face and the fact that i look like i could beat the crap out of most people.

Terves reclaiming the T word?

Something like that!

I don’t think I’ve ever really been a radical feminist, just radical feminist adjacent, so not really a reclaim, more of a taking the power out of the insult kind of thing?

Being branded a TERF used to feel quite scary but by using terf, terves, tervish, tervern, terfing, terfy etc it makes it funny rather than scary.

The Tervern makes us sound like magical forest dwelling creatures.

It doesn’t take much to get consigned go the terf bin, no need to be trans exclusionary (lots of feminists include transmen in their feminist praxis) and no need to be a radical feminist.
No need to be female either, which most actual TERFs would disagree with!

I personally like ‘terf’ as a separate noun that uses TERF as an etymological root. Terves (plural, as with elf/elves) are just people who said something TRAs don’t agree with.

So Elon is definitely a terf, despite not being a TERF.

OPs title was a dramatic flourish. No one here actually thinks Musk is a RadFem!

All Elon Musk said was that he didn't agree with sterilising children.

He didn't say nothing about whether TWAW, men in women's sports, rape counselling, speaking as though they are women etc.

It's a bit of a leap to assume Musk is a TERF in the MN & TRA sense of the word.

By what possible scale could Elon Musk be considered unintelligent? Thinking things you don't think doesn't make someone stupid.

I mean he hasn't actually built a Mars colony yet has he!!!!!!! I think people think that the fact that he doesn't succeed at everything right away makes him a failure. But Elon understands that to make the massive leaps he wants to make in terms of space travel and establishing permanent habitats on naturally uninhabitable planets. It will require the type of learning you can only achieve from an awful, awful lot of failure. As a private company, Space X is less bound by politicking in the way that organisations like NASA are, so he can make a lot more mistakes and push us far, far further as a result.

Most of what he does is done with an eye to Mars. Electric vehicles that can operate autonomously or from a central computer will be pretty much essential on Mars. Hyperloop, which is currently largely unworkable in Earth's atmosphere, will be the most likely long-term means for moving between colonies or from colony to mining site on Mars. Even the plan for what he wants to do with Twitter will be more important in a space colony than it is to us.

That said, I don't think he had the emotional intelligence to understand that most people value their interpersonal relationships more than their work. It means he makes demands of his staff that most people find unacceptable. And it's probably a huge part of what ends his relationships.

HathorsFigTree · 26/04/2023 18:31

For me, it isn’t his smarts that are his best feature, it’s his audacious vision with the work ethic to realise it. So inspiring.

His IQ is reckoned to be about 155, but I reckon he'd test higher.

I think some people think some of his ideas are stupid and, to them, that the person behind the idea must also be stupid.

I come out with some incredibly actually stupid stuff on a regular basis. I am however not actually stupid.

Stalin liked mustaches, so if anyone you know has a mustache (and a beard) they align with Stalin

😁

If anyone's going to be a terf, I'm glad it's the person who owns Twitter.

Justine next.

Yes!

You hit the nail on the head here. Posters can bend over backwards saying ‘they just happen to share the same view’ but a few comments in and we have ‘well he’s intelligent!’ And ‘he’s not an arsehole!’

so yeah. It’s more than simply acknowledging that someone else has the same view. It’s relishing in it. Gross.

I said he's intelligent in response to someone saying he's not. And the thing is, I'm not a reality denier. Elon is clearly highly intelligent in a number of forms of intelligence. Anyone saying he isn't, is just bursting with cope. Not liking him doesn't change the objective reality of the fact that he is indeed very intelligent.

I think gove is a complete and utter twat, I blame him (amongst others) for the sorry state of the british education system

but he is intelligent…saying that doesn’t make me an ally of his

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 26/04/2023 17:24

ive no idea about him

but if he is intelligent saying that isn’t allying yourself with him

and hitler wasnt a vegetarian….thats not aimed at anyone in particular

HathorsFigTree · 26/04/2023 17:15

‘he’s not an arsehole!’

I said that - or at least something like ‘I don’t think he’s an arsehole’.

My reason being, I haven’t been scrutinising him, though I heard a lot of predigested opinions, as though I was supposed to think he was an arsehole. My personal belief is that it would be hard to find a billionaire who isn’t thought to be an arsehole. There’s nothing like success to get all the mean-spirited, judgemental gossips crawling out of the woodwork looking for dirt to dish. So much easier to complain about what other people are doing instead of doing something yourself.

I hugely appreciate what he’s done for Twitter and insodoing, done for the world, done for democracy and done for free speech. At first, I was suspicious (after all - isn’t this guy supposed to be an irredeemable arsehole?), and I was so delighted that he took the risk, taking a huge financial hit for himself and his investors, for purely ethical reasons. He knew there was something within his power to do and he did it.

I also appreciate that he wants to help AI from being a threat to humanity.

Anyway, someone who does something ethical, of great benefit to the world and at a personal cost, to me, makes them not an arsehole in my opinion.

I would love to have some bot to trawl through all the personal decisions his haters have made, get them all up in the dock, put them on trial, and we can decide whether they are arseholes or not. I wonder how many would be found guilty?

ArabeIIaScott · 26/04/2023 17:10

Well this is disappointing.

Hitler being a vegetarian doesn’t say anything about the ethical stance of being a vegetarian, but if someone on a vegetarian board posted “Hitler was a vegetarian!” excitedly, people might have some questions!

I do think it’s amazing on this board the deference men with truly awful views, behaviour, and histories get for agreeing on this one topic, vs. the ire thrown at women. I don’t believe TW should be in prisons, shelters, sports and I disagree with other women who do think so, but I’d still take most of those women’s collective views over the kind of men who get praised on here for hitting the lowest bar.

There's a guy in my village who is a hard and fast political bighead, who thinks that the Tories have sold out and are now the most socialist party that have been in power in the UK in his lifetime.

We met up once in the boulangerie because we live in the same village.

I don't 'get wet' because we both 'align' with the same boulangerie. We just happen to have used the same shop at the same time once.

I think people accusing women of 'getting wet' because their views 'align' with someone needs to fuck off with their mysogynistic fuckwittery. Wanker.

I really feel like there's a song in here somewhere, about boulangeries and bigheads and fuckwittery wankers.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2023 16:34

Oh bloody hell, I've just read the tweet that musk was responding to. Sad what an awful, unnecessary waste of a young life.
