London marathon accepts trans women as women

Runner Glenique Frank has just appeared on the BBC footage, clearly male, and has registered as a woman. Sure, he isn't getting a medal any time soon but how is this OK? And don't even get me started about the stupidity of a non binary category - sure fire way for a mediocre male to get a medal! Utterly pathetic.

Why does it matter ffs how does it affect you, are you competing?

So you don't care that a male bodied person has a huge advantage over a female bodied person in a gruelling marathon?
There is a reason men aren't put up against women.

This testosterone advantage is getting beyond the pale.

Man absolutely shite at sport
''I'm a woman!''
Sweeps the board.

So grossly unfair to women.

Hagosaurus · 23/04/2023 16:13

They used the female qualifying times - which would presumably have helped the (overwhelmingly) male non-binaries get a place

Which means that mediocre males score far higher in the enbie category than they would in the male category. Boston Marathon results: 6 males, 1 female taking testosterone.

Just had a heated discussion with my teen DD re this person, is it definite Glenique (and other trans athletes) qualified on the basis of female qualifying times?

DoormatBob · 23/04/2023 17:22

Does anyone know the time and age?

If under 4 hours certainly could be close to taking a GFA space off a real woman for next year. Wouldn't even get close as a man.

I agree with the other runners who have said they do look at their data, where they rank against other women etc. This would undeniably skew the data.

poppysockies · 23/04/2023 17:09

Miaow!

shakershaker · 23/04/2023 17:08

Next they'll have a cats category for people who identify as cats pmsl

Are you being intentionally obtuse?

A mixed sex/non binary/third category will need a lot of development over time to make it work, as what any child could see is that this will initially turn into a beta men's category with a few female athletes on testosterone and probably be abused by chancers. But it can evolve with experience, rather as the initial mess of women's prisons and the EqA is evolving via the first horrific experiments <steps over the piles of harmed women>, and will probably in the end need to work rather like the paralympic categories do. In the mean time the elite women's and men's categories are left in peace to carry on. And this is the thing. Develop additional provision until the cows come home, great. Do it. Wonderful. Just stop buggering up everyone and everything else in the process until they are beyond fucked off and their patience is gone.

poppysockies · 23/04/2023 16:51

Hopefully this decision will be overturned. It’s just wrong.
As a runner I take a huge geeky interest in the minutiae of the data around my performances, I’ll never be a pro athlete but I’ve often finished in the top 10% of female competitors in marathons/HMs which is a big deal for me. If I was running against trans athletes I’d feel like I was being outperformed by my peers but without being sure.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/04/2023 16:41

Well done Glenique!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/04/2023 16:35

Oh, that's nice. We'll end up with categories for elite men, good men, crap men and middleaged men who never quite fulfilled their potential. With women and 80 year old males bringing up the rear.

flaffydaffy · 23/04/2023 16:14

Helleofabore · 23/04/2023 15:53

Because the ‘A’ stands for ‘activist’ which is the noun.

There is a huge difference between calling people ‘the transes’ or ‘transes’ and trans people. It is also used as a derogation. The same applies with the term ‘gender criticals ’, ‘GCs’ or ‘the gender crits’ as someone has used in the past.

Yes that makes sense thank you.

Hagosaurus · 23/04/2023 16:08

As an aside, I believe the Boston (?) marathon did indeed introduce a non-binary class - and the non binary runners said they wanted 2 categories: an AFAB and an AMAB. Almost like sex mattered 😂
oh yes, and they wanted the same prize money for the winner of each of those categories as the elite runners get 🙄

FrancescaContini · 23/04/2023 16:08

Florissant · 23/04/2023 13:41

Why bother to have men's and women's categories?

🤷‍♀️

Whoknewwhat · 23/04/2023 16:02

Women who are running against men but who don’t know this because that man has a female name and is running in her category will be wondering why they can’t get the same speeds which is not going to do anything for women’s motivation or training plans

it’s not just that thought. It’s that the clubs and associations as bodies who run your sport have told you, as a woman, that they don’t take you or your running or your training or your racing seriously, and, furthermore, they are demanding you don’t take it seriously yourself. And that’s a fucking awful thing to have revealed. It’s really demeaning.

YouJustDoYou · 23/04/2023 16:02

It's so fucking misogynistic.

Farmerama1 · 23/04/2023 15:58

What’s to stop me identifying as a 70 year old to gain a ranking advantage? Surely if biological sex is irrelevant then why not biological age?

So fed up with this sexist nonsense in sport.

Slothtoes · 23/04/2023 15:56

Is all this because women are supposed to be ‘nice’ and non competitive, even in sports?

This fucks up the statistics of female performance and it fucks up the optics of female performance.

Women running against men will always be and feel ‘slow’ by comparison because they are slower.

Women who are running against men but who don’t know this because that man has a female name and is running in her category will be wondering why they can’t get the same speeds which is not going to do anything for women’s motivation or training plans.

women who are running against men in their category will know and feel gaslit because as we all know, male physical advantage doesn’t pass.

Lisbeth50 · 23/04/2023 15:55

Was this the man in the cropped top who said, "Up the girls!" I wondered what on Earth he was on about.

Helleofabore · 23/04/2023 15:53

flaffydaffy · 23/04/2023 15:39

I think it's quite normal to use political identifiers in that way. Nobody says Tory people. Communist people. Feminist people. I've never seen anyone on this board use "TRA" people. Surely TRAs is also dehumanising then?

Because the ‘A’ stands for ‘activist’ which is the noun.

There is a huge difference between calling people ‘the transes’ or ‘transes’ and trans people. It is also used as a derogation. The same applies with the term ‘gender criticals ’, ‘GCs’ or ‘the gender crits’ as someone has used in the past.

NecessaryScene · 23/04/2023 15:52

And, to turn it around, you can argue that even if you're going to let "transwomen" put female on their entry form for validation, actually including them in the ranking or not doesn't affect them, so why mess up the female rankings?

They can see their time is equivalent to the 5000th woman or whatever without having to actually take the place of the 5000th woman.

and in 10 years, and 20 years, and 30 years, they will want to compare their times, not against their own times in their youth, but against their age related gradings, which will work out fine for them, being men, but is being completely messed up for women, becasue of the weighting that transwomen give it.

I've been running for a long time, and it effects me

Yes. The whole point of sex and age headings and rankings in running is to compare yourself against people it is reasonable to compare your performance to on the basis of biological similarity.

Allowing men to identify into the women’s category is done for an entirely different reason, personal identity validation. And that reason subverts and undermines the purpose and utility of the category for every other female runner.

And that is counter to equality and equity for women. As well as being a big ‘Fuck You Women, you don’t count’ insult to all women runners.

2bazookas · 23/04/2023 15:19

Two of my sons run marathons, have done for years. Most recently, Manchester; which had 28 ,000 runners.

Numbers like that have little interest in running faster than any one else; or who else is running. All they care about is their own time compared to their own time in previous marathons.

and in 10 years, and 20 years, and 30 years, they will want to compare their times, not against their own times in their youth, but against their age related gradings, which will work out fine for them, being men, but is being completely messed up for women, becasue of the weighting that transwomen give it.
