Has anyone else been forced to become Conservative after all of this?

Probably the wrong wording, but I'm curious - after always considering myself fairly left wing/ liberal and generally voting Labour (or tactically Lib Dem when I was in the SW), I no longer really consider them a valid option for me because of their gender views/ inability to take a view.

Has this happened to anyone else? Never thought I'd be a Tory, but now feel like I have no choice as this issue is so important to me.

The possibility has crossed my mind for the first time in my adult life. I'm in an area that went from red to blue at the last election. I was horrified at the time, but I now have an openly GC MP and I'd have second thoughts about voting him out. On the other hand, I agree with previous posters that whatever noises the Tories make are currently politically expedient rather than indicative of a true commitment to preserving women's rights.

My parents leapt from Tory (aspirational working class people) to SNP in protest at the sale of council houses, and one of them has been an enthusiastic whispering advocate and envelope stuffer for them. They ditched their SNP membership last year over the GRA and may well go back to voting Tory because the alternative is Alba and they're not convinced about independence.

@Fukuraptor
detransitioning is an issue, but there are so many other trans people whose transition is permanent and makes them feel better

The figures sweeem to suggest that 10 years is the period after which many people come to regret transition, or to realise that it has not proved to be the magic bullet for all of their emotional and mental heath isues.

Abhannmor · 22/04/2023 14:50

I cast my first ever vote for the Communist Party way back. It was in Tower Hamlets where they usually weigh the Labour vote.
I'm glad they still focus on improving the Material conditions of working class people.

Then there's the SDP. They were basically Right Wing Labour in the 80s. Which means Starmer would probably expel them - so Tory Lite has he become. They are also sane on women's rights.

I don't class spoiling the ballot as not voting per se. You are still making your point to all parties.

Absdolutely not. Everyone esle is a shitshow on gender but the Tories are a hateful and dangerous bunch and nothing would make me vote for them in their current form.

Ther's quite a bit of hate emanating from the Labour benches too. Have you ever heard Lloyd Russel Moyle speak? Have you seen how Lisa Nandy and others classified women's groups as 'hate groups'? Are you aware of how many Labour party women have been cast out and how the 'Labour Women's Declaration' was refused a stall at last year's conference.

The Labour party has stood by and said nothing as their own MPs and members are abused.

Is this issue really so important to you that you are prepared to continue to throw the disabled, poor and elderly to the wolves, sell off the health service, close your eyes to government corruption and illegality, throw the economy down the drain, and send vulnerable refugees - including women and children - to a highly unsafe destination? Seriously? If so, how do you live with yourself?

And you genuinely think that the Labour party is going to do much that is different? They keep talking a good talk but always dodge the issue of what they would actually do instead. Most Labour party members dislike Starmer intensely, and expect little from a government led by him. They see him as a sell out.

Where I live the Labour party is corrupted: full of toxicity, bullying and intimidation, and currently under government over-sight. The best thing would be to be rid of them

IfYouDontAsk · 22/04/2023 14:44

No, I’d rather spoil my ballot paper than vote Conservative. The Tories represent an individualistic, I’m-alright-Jack brand of politics that I find absolutely repulsive.

Floisme · 22/04/2023 14:41

Labour can get themselves out of this mess any time they choose, and I think they've just about enough time to do so and face down the reality denying tantrums before the general election.

Or they can dig themselves even deeper into craven stupidity and hope they can use moral blackmail on enough women to see them through.

It's entirely up to them. I think their decision will be very enlightening.

NotHavingIt · 22/04/2023 14:40

I'm an ex Labour party member. for the last few elections ( local and national)I've been spoiling my ballot due to Labour/Lib Dem/Greens stance on
Gender Self Id. I live in a Labour stronghold - although because of that, because of no challenge and because of complacency - the local Labour party is corrupted and utterly incompetent - and the best thing for the city would be for the Labour council to be replaced.

Going forward I will vote for any candidate ( it matters not what badge or colour they wear) whose views on things most important to me align with my own, and who I feel has integrity. I have lost any tribal allegiance that I may once have had.

xabia · 22/04/2023 14:40

It isn't just a single issue though. There are ramifications in all areas- education, sports, prisons, health...

Fukuraptor · 22/04/2023 14:38

paulinesmithson · 22/04/2023 14:31

No? That's ridiculous, you seem to care more about preventing people from transition (which doesn't cause harm) than about having rights for poor and underpriviledged people. The Tories are ruining this country with their negligence for the environment and people and you don't really seem to care

But transition does cause harm! Listen to the detransistioners.

Slothtoes · 22/04/2023 14:34

No I don’t feel forced to vote Conservative. All of this gender identity politics has happened on their watch.
What have the Tories actually done to help women with the parliamentary majority that they have had for the past decade, to deserve my vote?

RunningUpThatMill · 22/04/2023 13:39

I couldn't agree more with this. I'm worried that people who usually vote Labour will vote for smaller parties to the left, meaning the Conservatives will remain in government.

I agree with you, I think this is going to happen

Would definitely consider voting Tory for the first time. Former member of the Greens.

Laladybird · 22/04/2023 14:21

Labour is committed to introducing self ID if they get into Government

Satsumastocking · 22/04/2023 14:19

I've always voted Green, but this issue has put me off despite my agreement with their general ethos.
I wouldn't vote Labour and certainly not Tory. I agree that they might claim to know what a woman is, but don't care about us, plus they're probably thinking a woman has some obscure essence that makes them good to chain to kitchen sinks so they probably don't really define woman, as I would, in non-gender-essentialist terms.

That leaves me with the communists, which I really haven't considered. I can't imagine I'll vote for them, but I'll have a look at their policies at least.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 22/04/2023 14:19

I fell in with a bad crowd at Uni and ended up as VC of the Conservative society.

Since then my politics have gone more Left, the older I get.

I could never ever vote Conservative again.

Irequireausername · 22/04/2023 14:13

Yes, I have

ChaToilLeam · 22/04/2023 14:13

I am politically homeless. They’re all absolutely unacceptable to me.

Rowthe · 22/04/2023 14:12

I will not vote Tory.

I wont say never, but I cant see myself voting for them at least for the next 10 years.

Spiderywriting · 22/04/2023 14:11

Greens are the worst party on women’s rights and pushed the TRA agenda in Scotland.

WessexWanderer · 22/04/2023 14:11

No. Even if I was prepared to cast my vote on a single issue, I wouldn't trust the Tories with it. Look at out they played to those worried about immigration, taking advantage of their fears and possibly prejudices. Far from doing anything positive, immigration has increased, asylum seekers are risking their lives in the Channel, they're being kept in poor standard accommodation, the processing time for claims is ridiculous, resulting in more expense to the taxpayer, some members of the public have turned on the RNLI of all people and I could go on. But they will continue to exploit the fears by muttering words about Rwanda and anything else that convinces people that voting for anyone else would result in the entire world coming to the UK.

I suspect gender is a similar strategy for them. They won't do much if anything to safeguard the safety and dignity of women and girls or prevent the damage done to young people. But they'll pop up every now and then to ask 'Can a woman have a penis' and hope that convinces women to vote for them. If anything it will be in their interest to allow the situation get worse while claiming they want to improve it.

I'm not trying to tar all Tories with this but I think as a party this is their strategy. I hope they are out at the next election and will vote accordingly. Having said that, I don't want Starmer in with a huge majority so he has to start listening to concerns. And if I get canvassed by any opposition party, I will raise this issue with them.
