Gosh it is heartening to see even more evidence that the tide has turned. She's stuck to her guns and been too reasonable to be cancelled by the misogynists.

Times article here

The uncancelling of JK Rowling

Tide appears to be turning for the Harry Potter author ostracised for her trans views

Bashes trans people but pretends to be a bloke when writing some of her books.

Evidence for the 'trans-bashing', please.

It's really heartening to finally see that mainstream media recognises that Rowling is the sensible voice of reason, while groups like Mermaids are 'controversial'.

Mermaid's statement was obviously batshit. I think the public is very much waking up to the fact that the ridiculous talk about suicide carries about as much weight as the talk of boycotts.

The ‘talk about suicide’ is very much real.

Changing your name to write a book doesn't make you a man so why should JKR expect to receive the perceived benefits of being one?

You're calling mitigating oppression a benefit? That's totally shit tbh. Really shit. I'm guessing you don't support any positive discrimination then? Are you a white, middle class, able, heterosexual male? Because that is the group most prone to spout such nonsense. Usually actually because they have no reflective ability or don't care to make society more equal.

The reference to the history of women's subjugation earlier in this thread struck me as something important when it comes to the gender identity ideology:

It erases that history and the misogynistic present by its rules and makes fighting against sex-based oppression extremely difficult. That erasure or ignorance is the only way women, as a female sex class, are suddenly viewed as privileged over some sub-category of men of the male sex class: By pretending that women are not discriminated against or subject to sexual violence etc.

I totally agree. Claiming an oppressed group's history as your own when it's patently not is awful.

Slothtoes · 18/04/2023 03:57

Lovely to see Evanna Lynch’s sensible quote repeated by the Telegraph:

‘Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the films, told The Telegraph in February: “Her [Rowling’s] character has always been to advocate for the most vulnerable members of society… I do wish people would just give her more grace and listen to her.”’

Kokeshi123 · 18/04/2023 03:30

I think the fact that she stood firm and refused to back down has made a real difference in this battle. Fair play, JKR!

(Yes, the fact that she is a very wealthy woman made it easier for her to take a principled stance.... but then, look at the number of very wealthy people who still cringed and cowered before the TRA mob, because in spite of all their money, they could not bear the idea of being disliked or being unpopular for a bit. JKR was brave and did the right thing.)

On JK Rowlings chosen pen-names: I read an interview with her where she told that either her agent or her publisher told her, when the first Harry Potter book was published, to use her initial and not her first name as boys would be less likely to read a book written by a woman.

So the problem the Bronte sisters faced hasn't actually gone away.

That's one of the funniest things I've ever read on here, and I re-read the screaming at the Sistine chapel thread the other day.

I loved that one. I think it was the same week as “snapped and farted”.

Where has the time gone.

Sorry for the digression.

Why don't you concentrate on what I have said rather than what you think I said?

I was concentrating on what you actually said.

Not what you might think you've said.

You seem to be complaining about JKR using a male pen name to "receive the perceived benefits of being one" (a man), while not actually being one.

What are these perceived benefits you speak of, if they are not simply avoiding sexism in the publishing industry?

You seemed to be saying she has no right to try to 'identify out' of sexism because she's not actually a man, i.e. that women deserve and should put up with the disadvantages of being a woman in a sexist society, we have no right to the 'benefit' of not being discriminated against for being women.

If that's not what you meant, please can you explain again, because I'm afraid I've missed your point.

OMG why have you equated these two things? Are you saying trans people are "pretending to be a bloke"? How completely transphobic of you.

Yes, she used a nom de plume as I mentioned. To repeat the part that you ignored:

What you say is not very clear. You previously said:
Changing your name to write a book doesn't make you a man so why should JKR expect to receive the perceived benefits of being one?

In which case, why does changing your name to claim to be a lesbian make you a woman or allow you to expect "the perceived benefits of being one"?

It doesn't. That's my point. Crikey.

BTW, I notice that despite several requests you haven't provided any evidence that JKR "bashes trans people" or "pretends to be a bloke" when using a nom de plume.

Are you deliberately being obtuse or do you just struggle with basic comprehension and logic?

Several people on the previous thread all tried to explain to you why women publishing under male pen names as a result of outright sexism in the publishing industry and society has a long history.

A book is not a person.

AdamRyan · 17/04/2023 20:40

Maybe I am also a man, as I'm using a male handle

Or maybe I'm trying to get perceived benefits of being a man online. It works well on mumsnet 😂

Am I non binary if I use a male online persona and a female real life persona? Or am I definitely a woman as mums can't be nonbinary, or trans, as my teenager insists?

hotdiggetydog · 17/04/2023 18:55

Changing your name to write a book doesn't make you a man so why should JKR expect to receive the perceived benefits of being one?

Eh? This makes no sense
It's a fact that a lot of men won't even consider reading work with a female name on it. So why wouldn't JKR use a male name to write a crime novel, in order to appeal to a wider audience?

That's not a "perceived benefit" of being a man. She's not trying to be a man.

hotdiggetydog · 17/04/2023 20:31

crunchermuncher · 17/04/2023 19:41

You really haven't understood the concept of female oppression at all, have you?

Go and do some reading. Women and men, that is, those of the female sex and those of the male sex are treated differently by our society.

Hence women needing certain rights, protections and assistance.

For equity.

If men and women were on a level playing field, women wouldn't need to use male pen names to be taken seriously.

She's not getting some kind of bonus that she isn't entitled to, she's trying to avoid the discrimination and unfairness of being a woman. Men pretending to be women are stealing the things put in place to try and level the playing field, to give women equity. Trying to conflate the two as a 'gotcha' is just illogical.

And you seem to be saying that it's right that women are discriminated against, she should get back in her box and suck it up. Interesting view to express in the feminist board!

She's triggered by calling a trans woman a she/trans man a he etc. If you think the concept of being trans is a bad thing, then there's no point in insisting you don't have a problem with it.

I’ve never heard PP describing herself as ‘triggered’, but please post references, as I’m not an authority on everything she has said.

She refuses to call men ‘women’. But so do I, and so do most ordinary people unless they are being threatened or intimidated into toeing the genderist line.

Oh bless.

These are like arguments made by a small child who has grabbed entirely the wrong end of the stick. Just so far from having the vaguest clue what they’re talking about.

Given the username is a catchphrase from
a preschool tv show… maybe they are a young child.

I think they are. Sounds like one of the brainwashed young teens at school spouting crap they've seen on Thicktok.

@hotdiggetydog - cutting off a penis and creating a gaping open cavity wound in lieu of a vagina doesn't change your sex. You are still male. You can still get prostate cancer. Remove the prostate and you are still male.

You can cosplay as the opposite sex to your heart's content, but castration and bodily mutilation still doesn't change the fact you are born as either male or female. Or of course, as I'm sure someone will bring up, in extremely rare cases, "intersex", but that is an abnormality, not the norm.
