I’m a teacher and I have to apologise to a student for inadvertently calling a student by birth name and not chosen name. (Was early in school year and was calling the register in auto pilot). Had email from pastoral about how upset I had made them feel. I fell on tenterhooks round this student - especially at parent’s evening and reports as their parents are unaware so I have to use birth names. This is the worst that’s happened to me - I really feel for this teacher.

Female teacher forced to apologise for saying 'Good afternoon, girls'

Bosses at the £20,000-a-year school told the teacher to deliver the mea culpa after her class complained that she said 'good afternoon, girls' at the start of a lesson.

I haven't finished rtft yet, but wondered what would happen if teachers just started calling students by their last names to make it easier for the teachers to avoid all this bs. The amount of times my DCs friends changed their names, it was so hard to keep up. I can't imagine dealing with classes full of kids. And maybe just 'your child' at parent night?

That’s an interesting proposition! I had a teacher who called all the boys by their surnames, but all the girls by their first names. I found it incredibly sexist and wished he’d call the girls by their surnames too! He was also a homophobe.

‘What’s your name?’
‘It’s Simon, sir.’
‘No, not your first name, what’s your surname? Only big girlie p—fs use their first name!’

Different times indeed!

The school shouldn't be changing names without the permission of the parents.

Correct. And they should not be giving the whip hand to children over adults..Every teacher in that school now knows they can inform on their.teacher and cause all kinds of trouble for them - and they will have management on their side to achieve this..
And all this is done to support a condition that doesn't exist.

I told my teacher age 9 (1980s) that I wanted to change my name to Verity. She rolled her eyes and told me to move on. I forgot all about it. Imagine today if she had said - oh there there dear that’s fine. And that’s without the sex hormones and sterility. It’s all nonsense.

As a GC woman I'm very happy to respect the pronouns/name changes of choice - but as a woman with ADHD, if I was still a teacher I'd be amazed if I got through the school year getting right 100% of the time!

I find it incredible that you have to formally apologise when the child doesn't have the balls to tell her parents and they (and all their family/friends/most people outside of school presumably)call them her/she and by her birth name!
I also find it bonkers and very scary a school is happy to collude in keeping this secret from the girls parents. (Assuming there's no signs of abuse etc and the child is under 16/18)
Interesting' times we live in....

TheBiologyStupid · 16/04/2023 22:13

That's also true.

While it's true that many foolishly don't distinguish between the right and the far-right, the way that Nazi, fascist, etc. is slung around suggests that it is the far-right that GC views are supposedly aligned with (along with US religious right wingnuts, who share nothing with the posters on here other than a basic grasp of biological reality).

The way Nazi and fascists is slung around suggests these are the worst things the people slinging them can think off to try and denigrate GC views. It says nothing about where those views sit on the political spectrum.

The phenomenon of calling GC views right wing is IMHO just a silencing and smearing tactic

Only if you think that being right wing is somehow the worst crime in the world which it seems that many people do.

That’s shocking from a GDST school.

I had thought the GDST was standing up to trans gender ideology by saying they would remain a school for natal girls only, so I am surprised they allow the premise to be undermined by nonsensical use of pronouns and refusal to say ‘girls’.

They better take the G out of GDST then.

Who would bend over backwards to afford the fees only to have your daughter think ( rather, not think) in this way?

Sadly they probably would do exactly that re the G if they think of it

Marxism recognises women as a sex class and the Communist Party upholds our rights to single sex spaces. The gender ideology nonsense is not coming from the true left wing, but from Labour, Lib Dems and Greens.

It’s true it’s an illness of western democracies / centre left

It was being pushed hard by all sides until fairly recently. It’s a mistake - and dangerous - to insist it’s a movement of the left. It enables both sides to politicise it further.

But it clearly IS being pushed by the Left! The Tories are struggling to climb out of the pit they have dug for themselves on this but Labour are all in (full on TRA many of them) with a leader who is completely clueless.

Flowerly · 16/04/2023 17:52

I would always consider myself a socialist so therefore left wing. If you search me, you can see I’m a council estate kid etc. That’s from a financial/future prospect point of view.

I would hate gender ideology to take over politics as fundamentally I will always vote for the party that reduces social inequality.

It has fully taken over the Left - the Greens and Labour are mired in this shit up to their necks. The Tories are trying to do something about it.

My worst fear is Labour in a coalition with the Greens next year as then I know that all is lost.

ValancyRedfern · 16/04/2023 16:59

As far as I am concerned left/right is to do with economics. Gender ideology fits in better with right wing views, as it is very individualistic, however much of the left have lost their minds over it. The phenomenon of calling GC views right wing is IMHO just a silencing and smearing tactic.

Regarding talking to the DSL (designated safeguarding lead), my DSL is the most captured of everyone. Luckily my Head is more cautious. Our trans policy was drafted last year (full on affirmation, don't tell the parents etc.), I kicked up an almighty fuss and it still hasn't been issued. I think the school may now be waiting for mythical DfE guidance that was due last year.

ResisterRex · 16/04/2023 15:59

It would have been worse. I fear they'd not have issued an S35 in the Scottish self-ID case. And even that now seems to be being driven to the brink by the Greens. The Greens! They're meant to understand science! 😖

My own theory is it made its way into the Tories via some genuine believers, in addition to some who felt guilty at having opposed same-sex marriage. Or that their previous opposition was now career-limiting. And this looked like a handy way out of their past.

I suspect many of them saw this as a fringe issue when it was being raised (and it was) 5+ years ago with them. Then it started dawning, especially with Maya's case and the attention brought to it by JKR. Plus The Times and their pieces on the Tavistock situation.

Since then, the tanker has slowly started to turn round in the Tory party. And the others have done what they've done. (Such as stand with the "inclusive" conversion therapy ban signs, and advocate for male rapists to go where they choose).

I agree the revolving door of Education Secretaries has been a factor. It's also likely helped the more devoted civil servants kick the can down the road. I'd assume many of those trying to bring reason and common sense to the DfE have since given up and departed.

The GEO is meant to be part of the policy development here though. Kemi needs to bring fairness and common sense to it. She's probably the best hope we have of that happening, Minister-wise.

borntobequiet · 16/04/2023 15:52

I can only believe that this ideology comes from the left-wing?

I think you will find its origins far more complex, diverse and malign than you imagine.

Shelefttheweb · 16/04/2023 15:48

Yes it. Has flourished under a Tory Government, but that doesn’t mean it would not have been worse under labour - the party that introduced the GRA.

It may be pushed by some Tory politicians, but I'm guessing that they didn't invent this stuff? I can only believe that this ideology comes from the left-wing?

A conservative government introduced gay marriage, but I would still say that it was a left-wing agenda that some Tory politicians decided to go along with. So the left won the culture war on that issue, rather than it being an authentic policy of right-wingers. Maybe some people got carried away and thinking that they had to accept the left's position on transgenderism also.

You may think it's a strategic mistake to say it's a left-wing movement, but if that's just how it is...

I’m glad others see it. Obviously people can vote as they wish, but the idea of Labour and this ideology plus the complete refusal to acknowledge we’re even talking about it makes me feel a bit ill on re the Orwellian nightmare getting worse.

Agree. Sunak has jumped on it but the guidance is just what we have now, just in different words.

The only political difference is that the Tories seem slightly better at reverse ferreting while the Lib Dems, Labour and Greens keep digging down deeper.

Yep. It’s weak from gov but going further as other countries is even worse.

every day a mental health activity is completed

As someone who has suffered MH issues in the past, I can confidently say that that would drive me mad.

@borntobequiet I have changed my username but we used to agree on many a topic … I agree. I feel it is a tick box.
