Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
IcakethereforeIam · 12/04/2023 10:52

I wonder if this thread will go the way of all Daniel Radcliffe threads?

ScrollingLeaves · 12/04/2023 10:50

That cliche of “Kids telling [someone] who they are” is so inane when it is involving the destruction of their own body and peace of mind. That presentation is symptom of trying to escape from themselves because something is wrong. Being trans will not create their true self, and is unlikely to provide an answer.

True selves develop over time, are helped by having a healthy body, and are not ‘gender identities’.

Then I mean sex. ... But why to people have gender reveal party's?

They mean sex.

How could they possibly choose a gender out of the 90 billion options.
And what would that look like.

I'll take my personal favourite
Gender apathetic demi boi maverique.

What would that look like to a parent, how will they with external items show what that babies gender is?

Methinks Dan is paving the way to announce being trans.

Nah I don't think so. He does know that most of his fans are teenage kids and he needs the American ones to like him because his royalties from the HP films will be the lion's share of his income as he's such a terrible actor.

It's self serving, nothing more.

I think it's that people are icky about using the word "sex" are they still 9?! and innocently use the word gender instead.

This I think is one of the small reasons why this nonsense has gained traction so quickly

This^ Agree.

My nearly 11 year old spent yesterday pretending to be a dog. She’d have little idea what trans is and I’m hoping to keep her a child for a little longer without any of this being pushed on her.

My little boy swaps between being a cat and being a mummy. I live in fear of him doing it at his rather woke nursery 😔 (we're pulling him out of there as of next month) 🤷

Needmoresleep · 12/04/2023 10:30

Methinks that Daniel knows his main audience is made up of those in their 20s who grew up with the books then the films. Any work he gets will be because of his appeal to them.

I find it horribly fascinating how entrenched these gender stereotypes are in our society. They were fizzling out for a bit but have come back with a vengeance, arguably especially for girls who had made most progress and are now back in a female=long hair box, but of course most boys never even made it out of the box in the first place.

It's almost unbelievable that any adult could listen to that 11 year old and not remind them almost reflexively that you don't have to like any colour or particular activities to be a boy. But no, nod along Daniel.

Friends of the family in the US have a daughter who is transitioning at the moment. As children the boys were dressed as mini-mes of their dad, played sports and were always being praised for being tall and strong. The daughter had long curled or braided hair, really impractical dresses on any time I saw her and the mother was clearly uncomfortable that she were also tall and strong like her dad. It felt like she was always being squashed down.

Anyway, same sex attracted daughter is now a straight boy - hurrah! And they're hugely supportive and daughter says she's now so happy that she's her true self, so that's great... I dunno, maybe there were other ways of being a girl that she never grew up to learn and they just can't see.

Then I mean sex. ... But why to people have gender reveal party's?

Because 'sex reveal' doesn't sound very polite! But that's what it is.

Datun · 12/04/2023 10:22

Louiseandsophie · 12/04/2023 10:16

As in 'Sex change'... Biologically change?,.. no.

A 'sex change' doesn't change your sex.

It's cosmetic surgery to help give the superficial appearance of different genitalia.

With trans identified men, something like only 5% of them have it. And with women, it's even less. One or two percent i believe.

Indeed many men who identify as women thoroughly enjoy having a penis, and refer to themselves presenting as women, as gender euphoria, rather than gender dysphoria.

Louiseandsophie · 12/04/2023 10:21

JulieHoney · 12/04/2023 10:18

Sex is female or male and cannot be changed. Your midwife tells you your baby’s sex.

Gender is imposed externally by society’s norms and stereotypes of femininity and masculinity (these vary widely across cultures and historical periods). Feminists have been fighting to dismantle gender expectations for decades.

Then I mean sex. ... But why to people have gender reveal party's?

JulieHoney · 12/04/2023 10:18

Louiseandsophie · 12/04/2023 09:35

Why, 'Born a certain sex' means exactly the same as 'Born a certain gender' does it not? Born a boy biologically, born a girl biologically, biology determines a girl or boy... The sex I was born is female, I am of the female sex. Enough?

Wonder if Warner Brothers are paying him to peddle this crap, to counteract the Rowling Effect?

Louiseandsophie · 12/04/2023 10:16

OldCrone · 12/04/2023 10:01

now you can change sex

??????????

You can't change sex. Surely you know this?

As in 'Sex change'... Biologically change?,.. no.

Gastonia · 12/04/2023 10:16

Why is an adult man with no training hanging out with a bunch of young teenagers and making pronouncements about parenting?
This, absolutely.

I would like to know how the meeting was all set up etc, because DR isn't responsible for those young people's safeguarding himself. He's an actor looking for a (totally and utterly misguided, to put it generously) PR opportunity. Those young people are being failed by someone closer to home.

Datun · 12/04/2023 10:16

FrancescaContini · 12/04/2023 10:08

Ah, but how do we know he was a child? That’s a very “condescending” assumption to make, @Datun

Well, in my defence, every time he opens his mouth, he makes me want to condescend my arse off.

It's not altogether unsurprising that maybe he and JKR don't see eye to eye 😁

OutsideitsAmerica · 12/04/2023 10:11

Daniel Radcliffe has led a very untypical life. He is adored by his fans and along with the other cast members who have publicly dissed JKR, he’s doing a great job at keeping many young kids from detaching themselves or boycotting the Harry Potter franchise. Warner Brothers must be cheering him on.

He probably thinks he’s being kind and supportive but I just don’t think he’s thought about this issue deeply enough. He’s lived in a world where he’s pretended to be something he’s not his whole life. Yes, I know that’s just ‘acting’ but having done that and being in that intense spotlight from such a young age - it hasn’t prepared him much for ‘ordinary’ living has it? Maybe he’s fantasised about being actually able to shapeshift to avoid being spotted when he’s out and about - there’s no corner of the world that doesn’t know his face - how must that feel?

I wonder whether he’ll feel differently when he’s holding his own child in his arms? Do some parents hold their newborns in their arms and think ‘I hope you live a happy, healthy, fulfilling life, and if you want powerful drugs and major surgeries as a teenager, I’ll be there for you darling’ Surely every parent just wants their child to learn to be happy in their bodies? Or is that condescending?

FrancescaContini · 12/04/2023 10:08

Datun · 12/04/2023 10:06

Despite most people not rating him as an actor, he is, arguably, the most famous child actor on the planet.

I suspect it comes with its own issues.

ladygindiva · 12/04/2023 10:07

" trust kids to tell you who they are"
Ok so dd2 is a cat and dd3 is a fairy princess. Ok.

FrancescaContini · 12/04/2023 10:07

I read somewhere that there are over 100 genders. Maybe it was the New Zealand census form? Poor bastards, having to categorise all that information 😬

Yes, when a midwife tells you the gender of your baby, the sex of your baby... Used to be as simple as that.. born a boy, might grow up to feel you were born in the wrong body, now you can change sex, change gender... But you're born what you're born. I just want people to be happy jeez.

Born in the wrong body is over.

Mermaids tweeted that of course no one is born in the wrong body.

Gender is a social construct, sex is binary.
Gender has at last count 81 versions, ultimately limitless as you can call yourself any amount of those 86in any order.
Sex has male and female only.

Words matter.

Pearfacebananapoop · 12/04/2023 10:03

Why has he even got skin in the game? Is he a girl and we don't know it? Why the interest?
