God I love Julie Birchill. She's first on the list at my fantasy dinner party

SidewaysOtter · 14/04/2023 23:20

I’ve seen pairs of twice-used teabags with more charisma.

Daniel being condescending…

WickedSerious · 14/04/2023 20:47

Brilliant article.

LethargeMarg · 14/04/2023 20:15

Daniel Radcliffe trying to single handedly do away with the legal and ethical complexities of Gillick competence by telling adults not to be condescending 🙄

dimorphism · 14/04/2023 19:23

Julie really nails it.

viques · 14/04/2023 19:15

Great guns Julie, you honestly won’t miss getting a Christmas card from Daniel, I’ve never had one and it doesn’t bother me at all!

LunaNorth · 14/04/2023 16:42

That’s a bloody great article!

Trans was a known thing on the fringe, but I never thought kids would all get into it!

The kids always get into the thing on the fringe because it's the taboo thing to do though!

mach2 · 14/04/2023 10:34

If you buy into the notion that gender-is-innate-and-trumps-biological-sex then you have to buy into the idea of the trans child. The former collapses without the latter.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/04/2023 09:50

Daniel Radcliffe has been involved with The Trevor Project for the last 12 years

Hm, so he knows more about it than it seemed. But you'd still have to be pretty naive to take an 11 year old's words so literally.

Spudlover · 12/04/2023 19:53

Daniel Radcliffe has been involved with The Trevor Project for the last 12 years
so he will have been very young, about 21.

Im not excusing it at all, but he probably fell hook line and sinker for all the propaganda and now genuinely believes he’s doing the right thing.

Hopefully the reality of having a child will make him pause for thought, but I suspect he’s far too invested now to ever back track.

I've seen a lot of misogynist comments made towards Erin Darke on Twitter, including suggestions she must be trans based on judgements on her appearance.

I can't see what she's done to deserve this, other than be partners with someone who has voiced views that Gender Critical people may disagree with.

And I thought people "can always tell" what sex someone else? So do people really need to be asking if a pregnant woman is trans?

https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/04/09/daniel-radcliffe-erin-darke-transphobia/

Erin clearly has had issues with being judged by others due to her appearance.. it's sad. And agreed, I though only biological females can have a pregnancy?
Found this.. love that she embraces all the others seem to want to pinpoint and bring her down for...

but the big dangerous craze will probably be something new that we can't imagine yet.

Actually I think that's not quite how it works. The next new craze will be on the fringes now - it takes time to mushroom and blow up

It will be something we can imagine and envisage for that reason.

Oh do fuck off Daniel.

See, this is where I stand. I have no idea why his opinions should matter to anyone but himself. He's an idiot. He needs to fuck off.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/04/2023 17:52

I hope he has a child who suddenly makes him reconsider a lot of this...

By the time his child gets to early teens there will be some other dangerous craze. Trans wont totally go away, same as anorexia hasn't totally gone away, and drugs and porn online haven't totally gone away, but the big dangerous craze will probably be something new that we can't imagine yet. And his child may be very vulnerable to it just because stage and film stars' children do tend to be. Whether he will make the connection with "trans teens" now, who knows.

RedToothBrush · 12/04/2023 17:45

What was Radcliffe doing at age 11? Working.

He was exposed to adulthood at an extremely early age. His experience of reality and ability to make decisions is warped. Probably because he got lucky and had a good team around him protecting him, which is the exception rather than the rule for child stars.

So I can understand why he would have this warped notion that children have the ability to make these decisions.

But that neglects the issue that a lot of children are way more immature and vulnerable than he ever was and aren't necessarily surrounded by people who have their best interests at heart.

This also doesn't cover all the ethical reasons or medical harm results for raising concerns. He has just instantly dismissed them saying that doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is children get what they want. Trouble is what they think they want and the reality of what's on offer don't match.

This is all a reflection of his childhood and having to grow up very early in a very protected environment though. I hope he has a child who suddenly makes him reconsider a lot of this...

When I was One,
I had just begun.
When I was Two,
I was nearly new.
When I was Three
I was hardly me.
When I was Four,
I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever,
So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever.

MagicKittens · 12/04/2023 17:02

DS passionately wanted to be a girl at 11 for the deep reason that as a rather good boy treble, he didn't want his voice to break.

He wrote 1st person stories as a girl, begged for a guardian angel and prayed dramatically in cathedrals.

He denies any of this now and says we have very strange memories that make him look weird.

Puberty is tough on a lot of kids. They don't know what adulthood is like and don't want to find out.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/04/2023 16:56

(PS I assume neither Daniel Radcliffe nor Daley are reading this thread - I wouldn't say "fuck up" to a child)

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/04/2023 16:51

"Film star talks bollocks about things he doesn't understand".

Daley added: 'I don't understand why I can't just decide that I'm a girl.'

Same reason you can't just decide you're Leonard Cohen. You're Daley. You have the body you have which is male, and you can't have a girl's body or a woman's body no matter how many hormones you take or nasty surgical procedures you suffer. Even if you do them all then the body you get will probably not even look female and in any case it wont function like a girl's or woman's. The most you will achieve is to fuck up your well-functioning male body in ways that you can't yet understand or relate to.

Yes, children can harmlessly choose to wear a sparkly tutu or play football no matter what sex/gender they are. But the consequences of parents letting kids believe that they can choose their own sex/gender are dire.

I remember being 11. I thought I was the big I am and knew everything about everything. I thought I knew what I wanted from life!

I was wrong!

On all counts.

I quite clearly remember being not much older when my periods started and I was absolutely adamant that I wanted a hysterectomy because I wanted to go back to being able to play outside, up trees and be out and about all day without having to think about sanpro. I absolutely did not want to be a girl any more.

It terrifies me to think that if that had happened in the 2020s rather than the 1990s, there might have been a very different outcome for me (and pretty much every other girl that hated puberty and burgeoning womanhood).
