What is a woman, by modern standards and definitions?

Outright - I’m a sex not gender woman. But I’ve reached the point of so what exactly is a woman, as defined by inclusivity to gender based identification? If woman is gender-based, what is a woman by that definition?

Questions on a postcard to the Irish government who passed the GRA in 2015, they will have the answers 😉

mamakoukla · 08/04/2023 17:25

@taxpayer1 why? How? How can I be expected to accept if I cannot understand? Is it not permitted to ask how the world defines what a woman is? Genuinely

Dylan Mulvaney, but wait he's a GIRL.

He is the biggest trans troll in the history of the ideology, I reckon he is doing all this to show how ludicrous it all is, while at the same time making a small fortune for himself. Clever man.

I have always been sex female, even as a tomboy. I’ve struggled with women’s unequal rights, trying to be accepting of inclusive while still wanting separate single sex spaces amongst others. So how does a person identify as female? It can’t surely just be the clothing.

You can 'identify with' someone, but not 'as someone' or something'. If you are identifying as something you are not then your identification can only ever be a performanc; selecting aspects that appeal to you, or that you relate to.

Taxpayer1 do they?!

taxpayer1 · 08/04/2023 17:21

Trans hate speech.

HagoftheNorth · 08/04/2023 17:20

A transwoman I know told me she had always known she would grow up to be a woman, and some of her earliest memories were of looking at her mother and believing she’d be like her some day. My daughter has early memories of believing she would grow up to be a fairy, and the disappointing day when she realised she wouldn’t.

The fact that, pre transition, this transwoman would rail against her father saying he would never accept her as a boy/man sheds some rather interesting light on her position though…..

It’s somewhat off topic, but my autistic child is very poor at recognizing hunger.

Fair point; so how would you liken this to the discussion? Or, how do you best support your child in recognizing hunger?

mamakoukla · 08/04/2023 16:54

@WhiteFire that’s interesting but, from the standpoint of language, there’s a common understanding of what hungry means and that it signals a biological need to eat. What does woman mean in language terms?

^One of those Matt Walsh clips the
other day had a man saying that he knows he's a woman because women tell him so.^

I'm convinced that all the women he knows rush over to him daily, to chant, "Kevin! You're a real lady! You're all woman!" simply because they believe it.

And not because he looks head and shoulders over them and asks them if they think that...

DojaPhat · 08/04/2023 16:30

But no two biological women will have the same experiences of womanhood so the question is rather redundant. I don't 'feel' like a woman because I am one.

WhiteFire · 08/04/2023 14:49

A woman is anyone who says they are. They know they are a woman as they feel like one. Feeling like a woman is a feeling just like feeling hungry. So just as you know you are hungry, you can also know you are a woman. There doesn't need to be a definition of woman because you just know, just like everyone instinctively knows what hunger feels like.

So we have no more say in whether someone is a woman than whether they are hungry.

It makes perfect sense.

TheStrangestTimes · 08/04/2023 14:18

For me, it's the physical body - biologically, what we are born as.

I get the feeling that when trans people say they "feel like they're a woman", or they "feel like a man", and their biological sex is different, that what they're talking about is their essence or soul. The problem with this is that not everyone believes in the concept of a soul, and even if they do, they don't necessarily believe a soul has a gender, and rather the soul is genderless and it just inhabits a physical body which happens to be one or the other during the lifetime on Earth.

Things get further complicated when you take into account that those who do believe in souls believe that each person is made as God intended, etc (therefore to mess around with what God intended is an atrocious thing to do).

We can go on and on... But you see where this leads... It will never be possible for the world to unite on this topic, for this very reason in my opinion.

We can not and should not force other people to have the same faith beliefs as us, it'll never fly. There are too many of us with too wide a variety of life experiences which leads me onto my next point...

Our own beliefs on soul/science depends on where we are born, when, education, the place we are born, grow up and live, the family we are born into and the people around us as we traverse through our time on this planet. And of course, what we see on the Internet and the good ol' algorithms (Netflix's Social Dilemma, anyone!?). So we also have to consider the element of social contagion, in my opinion, also here.

It's all very messy.

LaMontser · 08/04/2023 14:18

Well, if we are to take TWAW types at face value, being a woman is simply the act of being not a man.

So, man “feels uncomfortable being a man / has defined mental illness / whatever” then he’s by default a woman.

Maybe the Green Party had it right all along - we have men and not men.

ilovemyspace · 08/04/2023 14:14

timetorefresh - According to some video I saw recently a woman is a woman if other women say they are a woman. I don't think I've ever been told I'm a woman, so despite the two kids I've pushed out my vagina I must not be...

I wonder how did they know that these women saying they were a woman were actual women ...... how did he recognise that a woman is a woman?

HagoftheNorth · 08/04/2023 14:10

‘You are a woman if you say you are’ - so if my parrot says ‘I am a woman’ are they one?

I am an adult human female, but don’t ‘identify’ as a woman. When I say that to trans/TRA’s they claim I’m being silly, and of course I’m a woman. But on what basis can they say that?

I notice some of our more contraversial friends are sadly not around to offer their opinion here - and I’m guessing they won’t be.

In biology any mammal that has gone through puberty is an adult. Therefore if you are talking biologically then a 10 year old can be an adult and therefore a woman. 10 years olds can go through puberty.

In the past people used to believe that female humans who had gone through puberty were adults and could marry. Although puberty tended to be later, maybe about 13. In some parts of the world that is still true.

In this country we say that a girl becomes a woman somewhere between 16 and 18 I guess. We have a social definition of who is a woman and not a biological one. This is the problem that I have with people like Kathleen Stock who say that biology is only important thing. I don't think they have thought it through.

the grey area around "adult" is widely known (exemplified by e.g. the many different ages oh majority, e.g. being criminally responsible at 10, opening a current account at aged 11, getting a part time job at 13, then getting a whole cluster of rights at 16, being able to drive at 17, then getting pretty much all remaining rights at 18, etc) and more importantly not really controversial at all, since 'women's space' is nearly always shorthand for 'women's and girls' space.

"female" is different, for obvious reasons.

YouJustDoYou · 08/04/2023 13:36
  1. Adult Human Female
  2. Anything that wears a low cut top, hot pink in some form (lipstick, item of clothing), skirt, terrible makeup/wig, giggles and head tilts. Oh, and long hair.

It’s really not difficult is it.

Woman = adult human female.

anyone else claiming to be a woman is simply wrong.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 08/04/2023 11:08

Is there any way to tell the difference between a transwoman and a man without asking them or them telling you? Bearing in mind that asking can cause offence, how are we supposed to know that someone with broad shoulders and narrow hips is a woman?
Someone like that in anorak and jeans was peeing in the ladies loo in the Tate the other day with the door open and I assumed it was a transwoman until he came out and saw me (also in anorak and jeans) and apologised profusely for having mistaken the door.

WeeBisom · 08/04/2023 11:07

TRAS are very coy about giving a legally workable answer to this question, but I imagine womanhood is now just a free for all. You’re a woman if you say you are one, if you appear feminine, etc.

This definition certainly explains the hatred directed at the women (old fashioned, cunty women) who who refuse to use she/her pronouns when talking about males!

Andrea Long Chua a porn-obsessed transwoman writer was lauded as a feminist prophet for describing the “barest essentials” of “femaleness” as “an open mouth, an expectant asshole, blank, blank eyes”

As I’m not a rubber sex doll, I guess I’m also not female. So, that’s nice 🙄

Ah, yes. Long-Chu, who famously said ‘everyone is female and everyone hates it’.

Chu claims to be inspired by the (bonkers) Radical Feminist Valerie Solanas of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) aka the woman who shot Andy Warhol.

Here, arts Magazine Frieze almost gets one of the many differences between Chu and Solanas - Chu wasn’t cancelled by Queer Theorists & Liberal Queer Intelligensia, Chu has been lauded. Chu has been celebrated by the mainstream.

Solanas’ work, which (unlike Chu’s) was written with the aim of improving women’s lives, was more or less ignored until she shot Andy Warhol.

Which one was born with a penis, do you think? Chu or Solanas?

https://www.frieze.com/article/everyone-female-and-everyone-hates-it-andrea-long-chus-theory-desire

(first image is Chu’s book, third image is an extract from Frieze’s article, last two are from this belated NYT obit on Solanas: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/26/obituaries/valerie-solanas-overlooked.html )

FWIW - castrating men (chemically or surgically) doesn’t seem to make them any less likely to ‘mess up any more women’s lives’, but then Solanas died long before The GenderBorg demonstrated this.

Disclaimer for TRA lurkers:
IMO ALL violence is wrong. Solanas should not have shot Warhol.
Solanas’ mental illness and desperately awful backstory are contributory reasons for her crime but reasons are never excuses.
