What is a woman, by modern standards and definitions?

Outright - I’m a sex not gender woman. But I’ve reached the point of so what exactly is a woman, as defined by inclusivity to gender based identification? If woman is gender-based, what is a woman by that definition?

Grace Lavery (?), a trans woman, once defined 'woman' as socially the group which takes the submissive role in sex and the home-focused role in economic life. To add to various definitions of 'woman' trans activists have proposed. It's better than Andrea Long Chu's "dead eyes- expectant *hole" definition that was posted here earlier, but not by much.

I presume Lavery transitioned to that definition, though hasn't quit working for money.

From the World Health Organisation:

"Gender interacts with but is different from sex. The two terms are distinct and should not be used interchangeably. It can be helpful to think of sex as a biological characteristic and gender as a social construct. Sex refers to a set of biological attributes in humans and animals. Sex is mainly associated with physical and physiological features including chromosomes, gene expression, hormone level and function, and reproductive and sexual anatomy."

Someone born without a penis.

@NotHavingIt So GP is hopefully clearly stating that he is NOT a four year old girl. It’s an attempt to access a feeling. And in no way makes him female or a girl.

You are, of course, being ironic? In what way would it make sense?

Because if that was the case being a 'a woman' is menaingless; it just means whatever anyone wants it to mean.

I was posting tongue in cheek, but you are correct that as it stands woman means what anyone wants it to mean.

A little more seriously though, man / woman is not actually a feeling, but identity politics tell us that "we are who we feel" that it ends up that "feeling like a woman" is the absence of "feeling like a man" . But no one really feels like a man or like a woman.

@taxpayer1 please answer the question as best you can. What is a woman?

If a trans woman is someone who is born a man and who wants to identify as a woman, what is it that he is identifying as? What is the nature of that which he wishes to be?

Grayson Perry says that when he dresses up as a four year old girl, Claire, what he is saying is " I want to be cared for in an unconditional way". His childhood perception was that if he had been a girl he would receive more love. He grew up with an abusive step father and a mother with mental health issues.

That should read:
I honestly don’t know what that means if it doesn’t mean adult human female

The truth is it is meaningless when it is unmoored from biological reality. It is a post modernistic construction of the type that posits we all define our own reality and there is no objective truth. A continuation, and end point ,of American consumer culture aligned with rampant individualism.

@NotHavingIt i guess many of us live in the first world so, yes quite pertinent in understanding where we align with that

I'm not sure i understand your point?

Everybody understand your reason for posing the question.

Well I’m glad to know that. @taxpayer1 what is your definition of woman please?

OP posts:
HagoftheNorth · 08/04/2023 17:43

Taxpayer it honestly isn’t being posed as a gotcha, it’s a genuine question. How does anyone know, even though I’m an adult human female, that I feel like a woman? I honestly don’t understand what that means

TheCentreSlide · 08/04/2023 17:42

Yeah it’s real War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery stuff.

The TWAW bullshit dissolves at the first rational hurdle and all that pushes it on is aggressive social media brain washing, threats, fantasy, tantrums. And money.

This is such a first world order of question, anyway. It exudes privilege.

Do you have an answer to the question you could share with the group?

taxpayer1 · 08/04/2023 17:34

mamakoukla · 08/04/2023 17:25

@taxpayer1 why? How? How can I be expected to accept if I cannot understand? Is it not permitted to ask how the world defines what a woman is? Genuinely

Everybody understand your reason for posing the question.

A woman is anyone who says they are a woman - the 'woman' in the second half of this sentence is defined as 'anyone who says they are a woman'. The 'woman' in the second half of that sentence is defined as 'anyone who says they are a woman'. The 'woman' in the second half of THAT sentence is defined as 'anyone who says they are a woman'.
Clear enough? I could continue further if needed.... Grin

Only if you have an unstable or unhinged grasp of reality does that make any sense.

NotHavingIt · 08/04/2023 17:32

WhiteFire · 08/04/2023 14:49

A woman is anyone who says they are. They know they are a woman as they feel like one. Feeling like a woman is a feeling just like feeling hungry. So just as you know you are hungry, you can also know you are a woman. There doesn't need to be a definition of woman because you just know, just like everyone instinctively knows what hunger feels like.

So we have no more say in whether someone is a woman than whether they are hungry.

It makes perfect sense.

You are, of course, being ironic? In what way would it make sense?

Because if that was the case being a 'a woman' is menaingless; it just means whatever anyone wants it to mean.

Well, if we are to take TWAW types at face value, being a woman is simply the act of being not a man.

So, man “feels uncomfortable being a man / has defined mental illness / whatever” then he’s by default a woman.

Maybe the Green Party had it right all along - we have men and not men.

I’m now imagining an all Tervern Devo covers band.

not unduly perturbed at transitioning him

NotHavingIt · 08/04/2023 17:28

HagoftheNorth · 08/04/2023 17:20

A transwoman I know told me she had always known she would grow up to be a woman, and some of her earliest memories were of looking at her mother and believing she’d be like her some day. My daughter has early memories of believing she would grow up to be a fairy, and the disappointing day when she realised she wouldn’t.

The fact that, pre transition, this transwoman would rail against her father saying he would never accept her as a boy/man sheds some rather interesting light on her position though…..

Of course children grow up in thew shadow of their parents's psyche and the parental relationship. I've often considered whethere strong maternal desire for a child of a particular sex can have an impact on a child that happens to be of the opposite sex. I'm sure it does.

There is a good Netflix documentary 'Petite Fille' that looks at the experiences of a young French boy who believes he is a girl. His mother openly admitted how strong her desire had been throughout pregnancy for a girl child. she also semd not unduly perturbed as transitioning him.
