The Irish need to keep the pressure up. People power. The tide has turned. People are having no more of this nonsense.
Next step reverse the GRA.

@Wonderingiforifnot are you happy to share women's spaces including toilets, changing areas, prisons & our basic human rights with men?

Do you think a person with a penis, no female sex organs, no monthly periods or who will never ever be able to have a baby is a woman?

Do you realise how oppressed women in Ireland have always been. We've only been allowed to vote since 1922 ffs & now we have been trampling & pissing all over our basic human rights as women. And we're not given any choice just told put up or just up like we were pre 1922 which wasn't too long ago.

It is anti progressive. It is backwards taking away our rights in such a brazen fashion. Silencing us.

Progressive would be creating a third sex, giving trans people their own set of rights, their own public areas. Then all of us can live together peacefully

I am delighted with the way things have turned so quickly in the UK. I hope to God women get their human rights & male free spaces back.
Our neighbours have seen how the GRA has been a disaster here in Ireland & Scotland. For their daughters sakes they need to fight for their basic women's rights.

And I hope to God that Ireland follows suit & brings us women back on the right side of history again like 1922.

@Wonderingiforifnot can you answer by questions plesase? Looks like you are conveniently ignoring me🤔

No it doesn't, the post I quoted bangs on about the Tories.

Women got the vote in ireland in 1918 after a campaign by the Suffragettes and a much larger campaigns by Sinn Fein (not the same party as the present day one) which emphasised the importance of a universal franchise. The first woman elected to parliament in what was then a UK election was Constance Markieveicz, and when she decided to take her seat in a new Dail in Dublin rather than in Westminster it was a decisive step towards independence.

Read it properly, or does that not suit your agenda?

"What relevance have UK social and political preoccupations to do with Ireland?"

"Parties in Ireland similarly need distraction from the cost of living and housing crises." Pretend it's not written there if you want.

When I read through threads like this I am glad of the posts that do challenge the view of trans people portrayed here, that's why I comment. So many disingenuous responses though.

Bláthannabuí · 06/04/2023 08:04

Only 100 years ago & no look at the turmoil the GRA has caused.
I am watching the equality act changes in the UK closely, I hope common sense wins out & that the same happens here.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 06/04/2023 07:43

What relevance have UK social and political preoccupations to do with Ireland?

Different history, different education structure, different life stories, different world view. We have our own problems and need change, and running around chasing UK weirdness is a waste of time.

It literally says the relevance in the post you've quoted!

Bláthannabuí · 06/04/2023 07:51

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry exactly & the UK hasn't passed a GRA like we have here. We are a way deeper ensconced in this.
The Suffragette women of 100 years ago who got us our right to vote & other basic women's rights must be turning in their graves now to them we gave our rights away to men so willy nilly.

The Tories in the UK need some way of desperately staying in power. Their hope seems to be to stoke the culture wars. Parties in Ireland similarly need distraction from the cost of living and housing crises. The issues they seem to be backing, especially in the UK, are anti trans & anti refugee. This thread is an example of the kind of people they are appealing to. The 'etc' covers the fact that they will go for other minorities or 'woke' issues if they think it can take some heat off them.

God no, its not trans forums saying nasty things to women that stands out here. Nasty things online are something we all have to deal with.

It's more like women speaking on womems rights getting rushed, elderly women getting punched in the face, lesbians getting shouted down for trying to organise, a children's protection activist getting assaulted while police laugh in the background, a trans person committing a school shooting and trans activists insensitively staging marches and "die ins" as though they are the real victims of society before the 9 year old victims have had a chance to be buried. That's only in the last 10 days.

Any of that come up in the forums you're a member of?
What did you say?

Setting aside how accurate this is or isn't, it isn't an excuse to be hateful about all trans people. I was replying to a comment about 'trans forums'. It is bigoted to suggest that trans people as a group bear any responsibility for the actions of a few. But some can't see it when it's to do with trans people. If you said group X were dangerous, because one group X member carried out a school shooting I'd hope most people would be appalled. But because it's trans people, it's fair game.

I comment on forums I'm a member of, & I've been a member of Mumsnet since I found out I was pregnant. Occasionally, I open these anti-trans threads on this forum but they're hard going, especially if you give an opinion that doesn't agree with the majority.

But is that the best you can do? The 'trans forums' say bad things too? It's embarrassingly childish.

You must be killed out on the trans forums giving out about the way they speak about women.

I wouldn't be able for it myself

scapegoats like trans people, refugees etc

Nothing has been said here about refugees except profound sympathy for any refugee woman who could end up in a hostel with a transwoman,

As for the 'etc' if even you don't know who they are, don't drag them into the discussion.

I do know many GC people including close friends and we've discussed it. I was a lot closer to that view myself originally. People I've talked to in real life do not talk about trans people in the horrible scathing terms I've seen used by some people here. If anyone talked about a group of people in a dehumanising way, I'd not have much respect for them though.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 05/04/2023 17:08

Have you ever thought that people don't discuss it with you because of what the fallout could be?
If someone you knew said transwomen are not women, would you still be friends, or would you cut them out?
Silence on an issue doesn't mean agreement as a lot of people are now finding out.

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 21:28

Absolutely. I'm 43 I don't want strange men in my personal private spaces nor do I want my young daughters thinking it's the norm. It's not.
This be kind & compromise business has to stop. TW have their own biological spaces, they can lobby for their own spaces.
Many TW (90% still have penises) identify as "lesbians" & are attracted to women. Considering most have their penises, this is a very serious safeguarding issue that is being brushed under the carpet.
Just to clarify I gave no issues whatsoever with lb in my spaces or my daughters spaces. They are women just like us. It's the "TW identifying lesbians" with (or without) their penises that need to come up with a plan b pronto as plan a does not sit comfortably with most women I know including lb friends & family who are at just as much risk from TW

I think people who post on this forum about teams rights have made their minds up and are desperate for any hint that there is a backlash. But I know lots of people who know, are friends with, or are just respectful of trans people. They know Barbie Kardashian is not typical.
Most people are focused on the very real problems affecting Ireland and aren't being distracted by these attempts to focus on scapegoats like trans people, refugees etc. So I'll just leave this here, most people on this thread will have a different opinion but if someone's scrolling through - in my experience there's still strong support for trans rights. And people aren't being scornful, or going on about 'Pissy' like children!

I'm friends with men. I'm even married to one. I'm respectful of men, as I am of everyone. Many men are lovely, most are broadly OK. Wayne Couzens, Peter Tobin, Jordan McSweeney and the like are not typical.

But I still don't want men in women's spaces.

1Week · 05/04/2023 20:49

They do it in real life too.
Someone I know actually stuck her fingers in her ears and went la la la when asked!!

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/04/2023 20:13

I think it's amazing that all the tra posters flounce from every thread once they're asked any question. It's a very notable pattern.

Pretty much everyone supported trans rights at one point. The right thing to do. Accommodations of course can, and should, be made.

But when trans rights activists turned this into a zero sum game, people woke up. No, if you're taking my rights away, I won't support that. The point of policy and law is to go someway to thwarting the edge cases. If the laws change to empower edge cases, we're going to object.

The more people know, the more people turn away from the extreme demands, a likely reaction which was and is noted by many strategic trans activists.
It didn't have to be this way. The fact that it is, is purely the trans activists fault.

I dont know where we go from here, but then, Im just one mother in an unglamorous town in a middle of the road sort of job.

Perhaps some of the many publically funded Trans organisations should come up with a different plan to help trans people. Because their original plan- just appropriate women's rights - doesn't work for us.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 05/04/2023 17:46

I also have always voted left, but have watched the way women fared in the Labour party over several decades with misgivings particularly after the merger with Democratic Left. I have no idea how I'll vote next time - but we have an as-yet formless referendum to get through first.

I suspect they'll just ask us to give up our right to a life in the home (and hence our right to a home) and leave it at that, with no reference to women, sex or gender.

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 17:45

@Abhannmor exactly I did the same as they improved women's rights for the better. Hoever the GRA has reversed all the hard work Ireland has done to improve women's lives. The GRA is anti progressive as it is allowing men into our private spaces, on our sports teams & in our prisons.

I'm afraid you are clutching at straws if you think GC ppl are all right wing . Or Christian. Or West Brits.
Most of the people I know supported Repeal and Equal Marriage and get on fine with refugees.

Personally I've always voted Left. People Before Profit , Labour , Soc Dem etc. Every vote counts under PR and a lot of people will be quizzing candidates about this dangerous unscientific ideology.

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 17:24

@Wonderingiforifnot my needs are very simple, I want single sex areas for me, my 80 year old mother, my daughters & nieces. There is no grey area here. I would really like TW to get proper rights for themselves & their own proper spaces. Women's rights just don't cover their needs because they are not women. Also our spaces are safe spaces for vulnerable childen, teenage girls, women & elderly women. They need to revert back to this & I will happily support TW getting their spaces. We can all live together happily this way. It's the only solution without compromising women's human rights any further.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 05/04/2023 17:15

Some of us have looked at what genderism has done to female friends and family members who have gone down trans route and are now suffering appalling medical consequences. It is a cruel ideology and people who get convinced by it that they should be trans are its principal victims.
