In The Times

Seems like he's done a strategic U turn. I bet at least he's glad he can stop dodging the "what is a woman?" question.

The trouble is, no lawyer in the UK can say ‘no women have a penis’ because of the GRA.

He could say something like ‘the biology of men and women is different and I support single sex spaces for women’ but he doesn’t want to.

He could also say ‘ the law allows, in specific circumstances, for a change of gender. Therefore some people born make are now legally women.’ But he doesn’t really want to make it that clear, and he would then get pressed about exceptions etc where is doesn’t want to go.

I hear what he says as ‘some transwomen are women, and I know some women don’t like that but I am just asking them to be kind, but I sort of support in some cases that they shouldn’t need to ‘be kind’ but I don’t want to discuss the exact boundaries’.

I can answer that! One man in a single sex space for women is too many, Keir!

One man in a woman's prison is too many - ask the women of Cornton Vale and Limerick.

One man in a women's race is too many.

One man in a woman's changing room is too many.

One man in a woman's hospital ward is too many.

One man telling us to shut up, be kind and accept other men in our spaces is FAR TOO MANY.

I'd go further than that.

It doesn't take ONE man to make a space mixed-sex.

It can be ZERO men. By the simple act of renaming a space "woman gender" instead of "woman sex" that renders it a mixed-sex space, even if no bollock-gantries happen to wander in to it.

EdithStourton · 02/04/2023 08:24

Remind me again who turned it into a 'toxic divide' by screaming 'no debate'?
Oh. Yeah.

If you have a cock you are not a woman.

What a bloody let down.

Floisme · 02/04/2023 07:45

I am waiting until their manifesto before I make up my mind but that is nowhere near good enough, Starmer.
You need to do a whole lot better, and also educate your comms team who appear to be tweeting against you.
You have about 18 months before I start checking out the independent candidates. I advise you not to throw away my vote lightly.

At the moment "not many" = 48,000.

I wonder what numbers equate to "quite a lot", "too many" and "definitely far too many"?

He is saying the 99.9%of women that are biological women don’t have penises and the rest do.
I am absolutely apoplectic with rage about this. The deliberate fudging of his words to try and slither under the radar because he thinks we women are so idiotic we won’t understand is so UTTERLY OFFENSIVE I don’t even know where to start.

i saw these meme today and I liked it. Get in the fucking bin Kier

This 💯.

I hope you're reading, Keir.

And again the best they can muster is ' there aren't that many of them'.

At some level this is acknowledging that there's an issue, isn't it?

Just basically telling women their rights don't matter as much as those of men.

I have a lot of respect for Starmer. He’ll make a great PM.

I have absolutely no respect for anyone who takes women for fools.

Starmer won't be getting my vote.

48,000 according to the ONS

🍆 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆
x1000

That's a lot of 🍆

Rereading thread now and see your earlier comment - that would have saved me counting on my fingers!

I don't want 48,000 blokes in my spaces, thanks Keir. 48,000 men in womens sports, changing rooms, hospital wards and prisons is 48,000 too many.

FigRollsAlly · 02/04/2023 00:55

Starmer has a nerve, talking about politicians who have “nothing substantive to say on the issue”. Where was he when the government were letting all this happen?

Blimey. Christina Patterson on Sky Press Preview also pushing back hard on trans ideology following the Sunday Times article. The expression of such views would have been unthinkable 12 months ago. That pendulum really is swinging back towards reality. And not before time.

I remember Christina putting the GC case quite strongly on the Sky press preview some time ago. Back then it was a pretty brave thing to do and she did look both angry and a bit scared.

Brexit is the nearest equivalent, he's had to dance on the head of a pin to appease Leavers, while knowing his Remainer base will likely stick with him.

Gender is an even more zero sum game than Brexit. But here he's happy to appease Middle England that is broadly GC, but not hyped up as we are, and certainly not across the detail.

He's hoping he can say to his activist base that he's not abandoning a broadly trans friendly approach, telling the Middle that he's moderate, and happy to sacrifice our vote, banking on us not being pivotal in any one constituency.

Im sure that is correct. However, he will have to nail his colours to the mast one way or the other-anything other than full fat "TWAW" will have Bloko haram throwing (another) hissy fit, whereas equivocation on single sex spaces will cause at least a significant percentage of half the population to hesitate to put their X against their names in the ballot. Do the fucking maths Starmer!

RealityFan · 02/04/2023 00:29

dropthevipers · 02/04/2023 00:19

with this statement Starmer has managed the difficult trick of pissing off everyone-TRA's, women, everyone. The bloke is a tactical genius I tell you.

Have any of us considered that Starmer is a trans ally, maybe not full-on Rayner Nandy levels, but highly sympathetic. And this language is his attempt to obfuscate and appear skeptical in winning over Middle Britain, while keeping the party on board?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 02/04/2023 00:06

What a joy this thread is. And what a twonk Starmer is .

Flannel, obfuscation, lies, untruths - none of it works any more Starmer..
Only the clear truth - women are adult human females and transwomen are only transwomen.

Thelnebriati · 02/04/2023 00:04

He still thinks he can appease both sides because he doesn't understand this issue at all.
Labour say they will modernise the Gender Recognition Act. One suggestion I keep seeing is the removal of the clause that allows you to divorce your spouse before they transition.
They haven't realised it means they support forced marriage and retroactively changing a contract, because they don't know what they are talking about.

They don't understand what they are talking about because they are only listening to one side.

southbiscay · 01/04/2023 23:58

Either Keir still doesn't understand this issue at all, or he still thinks he can appease both sides.
I'll assume that staffers are charged with seeing the reaction to this latest attempt to pour oil on troubled water. This thread, twitter and the Times comments section should leave them in no doubt it ain't going to cut it.

100% of women are biological females Keir, and there's not a single penis amongst them. Not 99%. Not 99.9%. Not 99.999999999%. And you really need to get a grip on the difference between sex and gender.

Any less than a 100% and you will not be getting my vote. And believe me, thousands more women are peaking every day and this is a red line issue.

Mollyollydolly · 01/04/2023 23:53

Not enough. What is really infuriating me is how he is STILL leaving Rosie Duffield to face all the vitriol alone, it's not even about the issue anymore, it's the hanging women out to dry. Reminds me of Luciana Berger, when he was in Corbyn's cabinet he never had the bravery to speak up, only became vocal after he became leader. He's a weak man. You don't even have to agree with Rosie to say 'Stop with the misogynistic witch burning.' He won't do it. I want politicians with principals.
