What do Labour mean by 'Modernise the Outdated Gender Recognition Act'?

This is is after suggesting that they arre rowing back on self-id. Is 'Modernise the GRA' going to be a new phrase that basically means self-id but we don't want anyone to notice?

https://twitter.com/UKLabour/status/1641689281617088512

The bile they continue to allow against Rosie Duffield (see the responses to the tweet demanding she be kicked out of the party for having an opinion) makes a mockery of any claim they have to be interested in protecting women and girls.

There is no compromise to be made. Either you have mixed sex everything or you don't.

Nothing less than total capitulation is acceptable to the TRAs. All we want is our stuff back - our stuff that was stolen!

Unless you repeal the current GRA (which changes legal sex for some but not all purposes) and replace it with some sort of ‘gender affirmation certificate’ that has nothing to do with sex, legal or bio and instead gives you solid protections against discrimination in housing, education and law without granting access to anything designated for the opposite sex

You’d need to use completely different words for genders though, not just pretend that male/female man/woman and girl/boy are gender based.(lesbian/homosexual/mother/father etc would also need to be ringfenced as sex based)

Call the gender options transmasculine, transfeminine, nonbinary, whatever. If it’s completely separate to sex and doesn’t use our words it’s not really any of our business (I suppose equalities data would need to collect both sex and gender, with sex being compulsory and n/a option for gender?)

If it’s completely, totally separate to sex then it could probably be done on a Self ID basis?

Young transactivists might actually prefer this but the late transitioning males would burn Parliament to the ground before they’d give up the pretence of being female (see certain middle aged TV presenters offering to show their imaginary cervix as an example of this type of activist)

As long as official forms would treat this as a section for those who identify into the religion and would allow all who don't identify into it not answer while clearly stating that they are non-believers this might work.

However, it would need new words for the identities so that 'man' and 'woman' would still mean what they always have meant. Perhaps 'gentlemen' and 'ladies' or something similar could be picked for the identitarian religious group?

Also, this could not entitle anyone to enter single-sex categories while being of the other sex, or be counted as a member of the oppressed sex for purposes of set-aside grants etc. just because of identity rather than because of sex.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2023 17:56

I’m not sure what compromise would look like in practise?

nepeta · 31/03/2023 17:53

The comments to that tweet do show all sides angry at Labour.

But the tras will never accept any kind of compromise at all, though the gender critical side probably would.

I don't see how one could ever be reached, given the intransigence of the trans side, sadly, so I no longer want to see compromise even attempted as it's just seen as the first step toward the total rule of the gender identitarians and not any kind of settled situation.

How does "gender recognition" in that sense fit with protecting single sex spaces? Just blows it apart I imagine?

I have gone from being a member of the Labour party who campaigned for them to fearing they ever gain power. This will be deeply unpopular as most people do give a toss about women and girls. I am looking forward to Posie holding Starmer's feet to the fire and asking awkward questions.

I'm impressed they've actually managed to upset everyone according to those twitter comments. Anything other than total capitulation to the trans lobby is seen as transphobic.

Black hole of need. Nothing will ever be enough to fill it.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 31/03/2023 16:20

Yep. The TRAs won’t be happy because no matter what Starmer does, they still won’t be able to change sex!

Electorally, as well as morally, they are bing really stupid. They will never be able to place the TRAs enough but women have a very few defined wants with regard to this and then we'll be happy.

The GRA has to be repealed-there is absolutely no reason to give any male legal recognition as a woman. It's a falsehood with terrible consequences for safeguarding women & children.

I was planning on simply not voting.

I think I will now lend a GC Tory my vote.

Giggorata · 31/03/2023 15:22

I'm with @ChristinaXYZ on this. Labour has been reluctant to support and protect its own female MPs, let alone women as a whole.
This is all dissembling and bullshit, in an effort to be electable. Wouldn't trust them as far as I could kick them.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 31/03/2023 15:13

I expect it is not what I would term modernising- perhaps reducing the two years after a medical diagnosis, or allowing someone to be recorded as having transgendered on their death certificate if their will provides for this.

The process isnt two years after a medical diagnosis. Its two years living as the desired gender plus a medical diagnosis. A GRC can be given days after a diagnosis.

namitynamechange · 31/03/2023 13:20

But as the article states "faced with no other options" they had no choice but to opt for it. It makes it sound like a life or death situation in the face of pitiless beaurocracy.

I know right?

Maybe I missed the bit in Dentons where it said “to deflect scrutiny- be as tedious, whiney, insufferable and petty as possible, so other people with actual problems won’t have the headspace to think about what you are up to”.

Cool. So no grc required to get married as your "true self".

Yep. But then transactivists aren’t exactly known for being truthful campaigners!

ArabellaScott · 31/03/2023 14:54

Are Labour maybe proposing scrapping the GRA?

Great idea! I'm on board!

TheSingingBean · 31/03/2023 14:42

Bloody hell, some of the comments.......the hatred of Rosie Duffield, it's horrific.

'Throw Down's Rose showing his true colours. What a delightful chap he is.

This is the current marriage certificate side by side with the old version (dunno if this change is just E&W or all 4 nations).

We used to list groom first then bride but now you can pick the order (which makes sense now that it can be two brides or two grooms!)

Old one asked for fathers details but the new ones offer mother/father/parent and allow for it to be left blank.

No mention of sex or gender.

Single has replaced both spinster/bachelor

(Thanks to the various tabloids for publishing Carrie and Boris’ cert!)

I think this is just an option to get self-id in under the radar.

I do not trust Labour with women's rights and women's safety - not one bit.

The parties that 'get it' (the clash between women's rights and gender issues) seem to be the Conservatives, the SDP, Reform, Reclaim and Kellie-Jay's new party. And those other right wing blighters, the Communist Party.

More weasel words.

Which other pieces of 19 year-old legislation are so horribly out of date that they must be "modernised"...?

Correct. The worry is going after the Sexual Offences Act so that "women" can be rapists.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2023 13:52

I don’t think they did say they were rowing back on it did they?
