I don't know who he is, but the clip made me wonder if the TW had been talking to a Molly Walsh, instead of Matt. I suspect they would have been angry and aggressive.

PorcelinaV · 30/03/2023 04:43

Sorry, "Bill Maher".

SpicyMoth · 30/03/2023 02:25

Some of the meanest, most aggressive, and deceitful people I've met would describe themselves as "kind, easy-going, and loyal".
I suppose if they say they are, then they simply must be so.

Delphinium20 · 30/03/2023 00:43

*referring to.

Not *refusing. Sorry

Delphinium20 · 30/03/2023 00:42

Yes. In some states you can get an abortion under 18 without parent consent.

But that's not what I'm refusing to - doctors are mandated reporters so if a 12 year old is pregnant, that would be a red flag for abuse and hence the reporting to CPS.

If a 12 year old gets an abortion CSS will take the fetus's DNA and run an investigation so Walsh is talking out of his ass on that one.

Thanks for explaining this @Delphinium20 . As it’s statutory rape I had assumed as much but it’s good to have it confirmed.

Not sure it’s as simple as that - I was running a quick Google check and found that some states had no requirement for ID from either child or guardian

It's not that people don't care about girls in that situation. It's that MW is entitled to his opinion about it and it doesn't make him an enemy. In the same way that his opinions on gender ideology don't make him an ally.

I appreciate that it might feel different to you in the US.

Delphinium20 · 29/03/2023 15:02

If you're living privileged in Europe or the UK you can just ignore all the other things Walsh has said that push people to deny even more abortion rights in the US because you still l have these rights. You don't need to fear a septic pregnancy because the lawyers at your hospital are fearful of getting sued so they send you home until there's no heartbeat in your pregnancy gone wrong.

If a 12 year old gets an abortion CSS will take the fetus's DNA and run an investigation so Walsh is talking out of his ass on that one.

Do any of you care or know how bad it is for women and girls who are pregnant right now?

PorcelinaV · 29/03/2023 14:42

It's slightly funny that he accidently became a best selling LGBT author on Amazon.

hamstersarse · 29/03/2023 14:39

@beastlyslumber

You are right, he is very funny

(Good) Comedians will say anything without caring about the pushback, he is very similar to that. I admire anyone who truly says what they think. It's a rare quality in today's micromanaged world

I think it’s a mistake to be so black and white in thinking to discard people like Walsh because you don’t agree on other issues. I disagree with plenty of women on all manner of issues but if we agree on the trans issue then that’s great, we can work together on the trans issue.

I'm not sure the different sides even need to "work together", but maybe GC feminists should be grateful that conservatives are in the fight, and conservatives should be grateful that GC feminists are in the fight, because the progressives have an unreal level of power for some reason.

beastlyslumber · 29/03/2023 13:35

I love Matt Walsh. I think he's funny.

I don't agree with him on abortion. But he's great on all the gender ideology and makes it really clear.

I don't consider him an enemy or an ally. Just a minor celebrity who's entertaining on this topic. I don't think that makes me a handmaiden! (I rarely use that term as I find it misogynistic.)

It’s equally possible to run DNA tests on a foetus (we have in vivo trisomy and genetic testing after all).

Of course. But do we automatically run DNA tests on aborted foetuses? Do we automatically treat a twelve year old turning up for an abortion as a massive red flag for CSA?

One of the points being made here (in subtext) is … who has the biggest motive to want a raped twelve year old to have an abortion?

Her rapist. Because even if it takes the twelve year old year old years to accuse a parent/guardian, her living child will always be the living evidence that she’s telling the truth.

Given that I’ve noticed a tendency to take quotes out of context, I decided to look up what Matt Walsh said:

If a 12 year old is raped by her father and the father takes her to get an abortion, the evidence of the crime will be destroyed and he will go on molesting his victim for years. If however the child is born, his crime will be discovered and she will be rescued from the abuse.

That’s slightly more nuanced than ‘doesn’t deserve an abortion’. It’s advancing the argument that a pregnant twelve year old is very likely to be related to her abuser - so is a relatively easy access to abortion allowing the abuse to continue?

A man who thinks a 12 year old rape victim doesn't deserve an abortion is pretty low. Why are you all handmaiding for him?

I appreciate that his views are at least consistent. He doesn't believe in abortion, period, and that is his right. He is allowed an opinion

It is worth examining that opinion too, beyond just instant dismissal. He believes that women should be supported in this circumstance, it is not just a case of discarding them to bring up a child on their own etc.

I happen not to agree with him when it comes to abortion rights for victims of rape, but we do need people to challenge our views on things, and hearing views like this make us truly question whether we have thought things through. I don't believe in late term abortions for example, but why not? If I believe in early term abortions, what is the difference? It is quite illogical in some ways, although I can now happily justify my beliefs.

BonfireLady · 29/03/2023 10:57

I am a critical thinker with my own views. I'm definitely not "handmaiding" anyone.

To pluck out some more examples..

I read recently that Blair White is a Trump fan. I personally find Trump's views on pretty much everything I have seen abhorrent. However, I appear to have very similar (I can't imagine completely the same) views on transgender concerns as Blair White, despite both of us approaching the topic from different viewpoints. That doesn't mean I support everything Blair White says, nor by extension that I support Trump. I should imagine I could have some interesting debates with Blair White, each of us learning some interesting things. Whether I could do that with Matt Walsh and Trump, I have no idea but I'd be prepared to give it a go. I'm an atheist and I oppose gun ownership - I'm quite vociferous in my views (I do listen and I respect how people feel strengthened and centred by their beliefs, particularly religious beliefs) so it'd be a lively debate I'm sure!

Delphinium20 · 29/03/2023 08:12

Literal handclaps for a misogynist.

Delphinium20 · 29/03/2023 08:11

He's free to hold his opinions. I'm free to criticize women on a feminist board for exalting him for saying nothing original nor what feminists haven't been saying forever.

A man who thinks a 12 year old rape victim doesn't deserve an abortion is pretty low. Why are you all handmaiding for him?

I think differences of opinion are healthy in a functioning society. I have sufficient critical thinking skills that I can address ideas on their own merit rather than being obsessed with making someone pass a purity test before blindly believing their opinions on all manner of things.

I don't agree with Walsh on abortion, but he is free to hold an opinion that comes from weighting facts in a different way I would.

Ideas should stand alone; criticise those, not the person speaking them.
