Nicola Sturgeon’s final address -I’ve had more toxic abuse over trans rights than any other

Nicola Sturgeon on her final speech as Scottish leader- women should ‘relearn how to disagree’ - it’s a very odd speech which blames the backlash on a very unpopular policy which was being pushed through without the consent of the people.

“I’ve had more toxic abuse, on this issue, much of it from women claiming to care about women’s rights and women’s safety than I have from probably any other issue,” she said.
“All of us need to take a step back and reflect on that.
“We can disagree and obviously do disagree but whether it’s on this issue or other issues, we need to relearn how to disagree in a way that is civilised and respectful and brings a bit of good faith back into some of these debates.”

THANK YOU I AM GLAD TO HAVE RAISED THE PROFILE OF RAPISTGENDER THROUGHOUT THE WORDL AND HOPEFULLY DONE MY BIT FOR WOMEN

There's a word for someone who provides women in their power as victims for male perpetrators to assault. Its on the tip of my tongue.

When she steps back and reflects, as she is obviously going to do herself as she says so, perhaps she’ll realise that listening and addressing women’s very valid concerns, rather than ignoring and overriding them, might have led to a better conclusion.

Spot on!

I have tried to understand the out-of-proportion rage responses on this issue from trans activists, from some transgender people, and from those who have promoted that side of this issue.

On top of the usual explanations for that rage I'd add, for those who are pushing the agenda, the possibility that on some deeper level (at least) they know that what trans activists demand will come out of women's rights, our ability to politically organise, our words, our spaces, our victories and awards, and our relative standing in the world. Even the very basic way we define ourselves is now deemed bigotry.

They have chosen their side but they still don't want to be reminded of the choice they made. On another thread commenters mentioned how some young women and girls who are very TWAW burst into tears when these issues are debated, and that made me think that a similar reason might be behind both the tears and the rage:

Anyone who really thinks these things through will find that there is an inherent clash of demands for rights and existing rights here, and that's an uncomfortable place to be (I know, as that's were I have been for ten years now).

Hmm that is quite an optimistic take on a clearly entitled and unreflective woman, but I applaud your hope.

For “toxic,” read “saying something I don’t agree with.”

I’m sure she has been subjected to abuse; show me a politician (particularly a female one) that hasn’t been. Plenty of nutters out there.

Whether the real abuse was coming from women who opposed self ID… well that I don’t buy.

I'm honestly starting to wonder what kind of a bubble she has been kept in.

But then any TQ+ political lobby member who went near her would have been on their best behaviour, she will have only encountered the very well marketed image and a lot of emotive anecdotes.

I would have assumed that she actually read some of the consultation responses (if it was not the case that every single one doing anything but sealion clapping was binned as disgusting filthy bigotry) and has seen the kind of social media sewage of ugly threats and incoherent misogynist rage that emanates from said lobby.

But I'm quite suspicious now that she's been bubblewrapped away from all this nasty reality stuff. And this is the problem with those who believe in reality being created from the nice bits you like, and shouting and scolding anyone who reminds you of the bits you've blocked out.

The first requirement for someone in a position of responsibility has to be to be able to cope with reality and to have a grip on it.

Yes, I agree.

Isla Bryson seemed to come as something of a shock to her. Not to anyone else, obvs.

You'd have to be really bloody gullible though and live in a bubble to not know about cross dressers. Even if you thought they were few and far between, and trans ideology was real.

howmanybicycles · 21/03/2023 14:33

Most sex offenders are never caught though so I'm not sure who it would be more palatable for unless most people are living with their heads in the clouds and unaware of that fact.

IWilloBeACervix · 21/03/2023 14:00

One interesting, and quite scary, thing I’ve thought about after all of this, is that if they had accepted just one amendment to the GRR that stopped sex offenders from being included in self-id, she may well still be in a job. That small amendment may have made the whole idea of removing women as a sex-class palatable enough to get it through.

That exactly what I didn’t get as well. When the amendments were going through they really shot themselves in the foot by not smoothing them edges a bit didn’t they. I didn’t get it at the time because if they had taken a couple of amendments - namely the 16 year old one and the sex offenders one - they would have smoothed the edges and it would probably stand. So happy they didn’t because they have brought the whole thing crashing down. But again, the sheer arrogance and belief that leaving these in place would be ok is mindblowing.

howmanybicycles · 21/03/2023 14:23

Didn't she hurl names at women who want to keep a category of women for just biological women? So, she's the one who was dishing out toxic abuse? She is a loathsome and arrogant woman. She makes my skin crawl.

guinnessguzzler · 21/03/2023 14:11

Totally agree @IWilloBeACervix so in some ways I'm glad they kept pushing to get the whole thing through as they did as it has really highlighted a load of issues. Had they not been so stubborn and actually bothered to listen they would probably have got most of it through. Instead now more people are paying closer attention and I can't see GRR or independence happening any time soon. That's Sturgeon's legacy. A bit like Cameron actually, she's achieved almost the exact opposite of what she set out to do.

BloodyHellKen · 21/03/2023 14:00

As Nicola believes TWAW she must be referring to the sort of 'women' that have a cock and balls and all the toxic abuse they spew no?

Helleofabore · 21/03/2023 13:58

Datun · 21/03/2023 13:00

It's straight out of the TRA playbook. Why punish us all by what a few miscreants do.

We're harmless.

She hasn't listened and she's not listening still.

She can't possibly think she was not out of step with the public. Or She's clearly never read a btl comment, ever.

She has created a specially exempt class for safeguarding.

AliceOlive · 21/03/2023 13:42

Since she does not know what a woman is, it’s hard to take her seriously when she’s rebuking women.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 21/03/2023 12:25

“There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group.

Yes there is.
What about airport security where we all have to go through processes scanning and our bags, not taking liquids, going through airport security metal detectors because there may be a few terrorist (most likely violent men) who want to harm us.

What about entering a Court or a museum where bags are checked because there might be (violent men) who want to bring in weapons to do harm.

What about protecting women in vulnerable spaces from (violent men) who want to harm them.

It's a SECURITY ISSUE not a RIGHTS issue and if some non violent men have to be treated as though they are a security risk it is because it benefits the majority.

Absolutely!

I am increasingly realising how absolutely abusive and toxic some people are

Sturgeon’s DARVO seems entirely in character

good riddance

This stuff really helps you see it in many public figures.

Now when they talk you translate to - this is their sub councious they refuse to listen to -so they shout at us instead of themselves.

It's quite revelling and entertaining, what Angela Rayner is getting up to is a cracker in particular, every time she opens her mouth shouting at women or Tories she is telling you all about her.

Apply it to David Lammy and you work out that he is angry that he is a hoarder (anyone seen his house or bank account?) and an extinct old dinosaur that his ideas are dying out, you can then start to laugh at them.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2023 13:27

nilsmousehammer · 21/03/2023 13:27

Oh for goodness sake Nicola, yes of course we bloody do!

It's a group called 'men' who are denied access to female only spaces (or did until you and your ilk fucked around with it)

It's a group called 'everyone applying for a job involving a position of trust over vulnerable people who needs a DBS'.

There are MANY situations, many safeguarding related, where the behaviour of some means access denied to all of that group.

nilsmousehammer · 21/03/2023 13:25

Prove it love. Get out the quotes. Show the screen shots.

Women can pull out hundreds and hundreds of death threats, rape threats, obscene drawings, appalling abuse - which incidentally you personally did fuck all about while tucking male rapists into women's prisons and effectively providing female prisoners as a buffet for them -

where's your 'toxic abuse'?

Let's check. Because I'll bet it was women saying 'no' and telling you you were no feminist.

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2023 13:18

Helleofabore · 21/03/2023 12:44

Wait! did she really say this do you think or was this a twist from the reporter?

"There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group."

Because maybe she hasn't realised quite what she has said....

She said that Bryson IS a Transwomen then?

TrashyPanda · 21/03/2023 13:05

There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group

Ah, the old lie.

that would be the group of men imprisoned for rape, torture and murder who then claim to be trans?

they have no rights to be in women’s prisons. They are not being denied anything. Unless Nicola thinks preventing them raping women is a denial of their “rights”.
