Neil Kinnock's daughter in law's concerns about non-binary child's masectomy

Denmark's first woman prime minister has spoken of her fears over her 23-year-old child's decision to have a double mastectomy after changing gender.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt – the daughter-in-law of former Labour grandees Neil and Glenys Kinnock – said she was concerned that Milo, previously known as Camilla, would no longer be able to breastfeed should children arrive on the scene.

The focus on breastfeeding is odd. That's the least of your problems if you're electing for a double mastectomy!

Sort of lost me there. To the outside, it just comes across strange. There are no grandchildren, and not breastfeeding isn't a big deal.

The BIG DEAL is that it's an irreversible decision to remove healthy breasts from a long female and presumably there is a concern that the non binary thing could be a phase, leading to massive regret - and the ramifications of that.

She’s saying that particular point probably because it’s a pragmatic statement of fact that her child can accept her mum thinks about. Her child is an adult and she doesn’t want to lose contact with them, quite understandably.

Harping0n · 19/03/2023 21:57

@Crouton19 breasts also are an area of sexual pleasure. So they are for the female concerned. Not purely for others. The act of breastfeeding helps bond mother and baby, in the early days the baby’s sucking causes a reaction to shrink the womb back to its pre pregnancy size.
I’m sure there are other aspects that I haven’t though of.

Stephen Kinnock’s wife is the former Danish PM. It is their 23yo child who has had the double mastectomy, as discussed in the podcast/interview. The DM article in theOP refers to the former Danish PM (Stephen’s wife) as Neil’s DIL. The 23yo is Neil’s grandchild.

Going off on a tangent, but I thought they were divorced, thus making her Neil Kinnock’s ex DiL.

What a complete FAIL of feminism this thread is.

Read the fucking title out loud and have a word with yourselves.

"Denmark's first woman prime minister" has been relegated to "Neil Kinnock's daughter in law" and the person who actually had the mastectomy - is relegated to being the accessory of a political family.

And all those of you posting who didn't pick it up - shame on you.

Your GC views and anti-Labour mindset are your prerogative. But you are not feminists.

O frabjous day, my bingo card is complete!
A man has arrived to tell the wimmin how they are doing feminism all wrong.😁

Haven't seen one in the wild for a few weeks. Nice to know they're still typing away in their basements.

FrancescaContini · 19/03/2023 21:53

The mum thinks it’s “cool”…Jesus wept…

Mark19735 · 19/03/2023 21:52

Do you really think the words used to described the ex Danish PM and her relationship to a British politician is the bigger issue here?

Yes, I do, as a matter of fact. Years and years of progress rolled back and everyone is so focussed on the side show they barely notice.

"I doubt she will ever get over her daughter harming her own body because an insidious, misogynist ideology has gripped the West."

Glad you feel empowered to speak on behalf of others. Takes some entitlement to opine on the feelings of people you don't even know. People who, you know, have already achieved greatness ... not simply by marrying the son of a former leader of the UK Labour Party. I mean it's not like she wasn't the freely elected leader of an EU member state and presumably knows her own mind and how to articulate her thoughts ... no, your doubts about what she must really feel clearly takes precedence.

Fucks sake yourself.

frazzled1 · 19/03/2023 21:36

Heartbreaking. Healthy breasts removed from yet another gender non-conforming (lesbian? autistic?) young woman.

If I ruled the world, every surgeon carrying out these mastectomies would be obliged to record patient satisfaction (or not) ten years post op.

A fail of feminism?

Are you taking the piss?

This is a thread highlighting the global problem of young women and girls being groomed to have dangerous elective double mastectomies by pseudo religious indoctrination.

Do you really think the words used to described the ex Danish PM and her relationship to a British politician is the bigger issue here?

I think Helle will get over being called Neil Kinnock's daughter in law (mildly dismissive but factual). I doubt she will ever get over her daughter harming her own body because an insidious, misogynist ideology has gripped the West.

Fucks sake.

MumOfYoungTransAdult · 19/03/2023 20:46

My sympathies are with the Kinnocks and their family. I doubt any of the adults told their child or grandchild "double mastectomy, what a fantastic idea". As someone said upthread, there's only so much you can put into words and there's only so much you can say to a child who is hellbent on self harm.

There's nothing special about politicians and their families. We're all vulnerable to this, it's hurting all of us.

We need wider recognition that a "nonbinary" identity is not physically harmless. And there's room for a big discussion about just how much these "nonbinary" identities are the result of internalised misogyny.

ohsuzannah · 19/03/2023 16:55

5 years ago I had breast cancer, bi-lateral. It was touch and go whether the surgeon would have to remove both breasts. Luckily, having a D cup breast meant he could do bi-lateral lumpectomies. The relief was enormous!
Every time I see a post like this I cringe. Those stupid stupid people have no idea what they have done. Mutilating themselves for nothing. Their lives must be very empty Angry

I assume Neil's dil means she is married to Stephens brother. Otherwise Neil would be her grandfather.

Isn't Stephen Kinnock, (this young woman's father) still a Westminster MP? Somebody should ask him if maybe this ideology isn't all it's cracked up to be. I am uncomfortable bringing family members into it but they are happy enough to flaunt their mentally ill adult children for woke points.

I thought this line was interesting - the scars themselves now being an important part as this signify the transness

'I think the scars are pretty cool,' Milo said. 'My scars have many layers. On one hand, they show the world that I'm trans. I want to show that I'm trans and proud.'

It's almost like, 'Look at the effort and pain I've gone through. Now you have to treat me like a human being and not a woman.'

BettyFilous · 19/03/2023 14:04

IvyTwines · 19/03/2023 09:07

Yes, that line about the scars and that very troubling line that keeps coming up again and again in these accounts, how liberating it is to be able to go swimming. They can only see their own body though the male gaze. They think breasts are for male sexual consumption, not a sensitive part of you, and to nourish the baby you can create.

I don’t find my breasts any impediment to swimming whatsoever. If you don’t like feeling exposed there are many places where you can buy modest swimwear these days.

So sad that we live at a time when gender non-conforming and lesbian girls are encouraged to believe they're not women and that doctors are prepared to remove healthy breasts on request.

This.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 19/03/2023 12:41

Non binary transmasculine. Uses male pronouns. What?

Wanderingowl · 19/03/2023 11:50

I never thought I'd be glad not to have a daughter but I kind of am now. I was always a tomboy and am still somewhat gender non-conforming. My mum is the same. I'd likely have a daughter with similar traits and I'd be terrified of her getting caught up in this. I keep thinking back to my own teens and wondering if I'd have gotten caught up in it or managed to have stayed clear. And I honestly don't know which would have happened. I've always been super maternal so that would have been a protective factor. My mother pointing out that I wouldn't be able to breastfeed after a mastectomy probably would have put me off wanting one.

But I worry a lot about my extended family. I have a cousin slightly younger than Milo who is a lesbian and is more and more adopting that 'transmasc' look. She has a number of friends who all look identical and joke on SM all the time about being boys. She used to say she wanted to be a boy all the time when she was a young child though seemed to grow out of that as a teenager. I'm very worried for her as I know how 'contagious' this can be and just hope that she's old enough to be less influenced.

I have a cousin on the other side of my family who is now a "transman." She's 16 and her mother seems to be fully on board with it. She was never even a little bit non gender confirming as a child. So this has come out of nowhere. I just hope that her transition is entirely social and not medicated. But even binding can cause irreversible damage to breast tissue. And we all know that social transition so often leads to medication.

100% our DD was very nonconfirming/gender neutral at 15/16 now full on girly girl. Would have been devastated if she had wanted her breasts cut off. I also really hate the term "top surgery" - it really diminishes the reality of what it is radical mastectomy

ArcticSkewer you win comment of the day. Also I can’t rest a cake plate on mine so I’m now faintly jealous.

Breasts are only ever for the benefit of others. Men who like to look at them and babies who feed from them. They are a pain in the arse to have to carry round for most of a lifetime, waiting to fulfil their purpose (for many, becoming sore and painful in the process) and then harbour lumps which might kill you. Sometimes I’m surprised it has taken the invention of gender identity ideology for there to be a movement to remove them.

Breasts play a very significant role in our immune system as breast tissue is comprised in part of myeloid and lymphoid immune cells. So no, they aren't just for the benefit of others. Which is frankly a very, very, very weird fucking take.

In addition to that, for most women, breasts are a source of significant sexual pleasure. Plenty of women, around 1 in 8, can orgasm from breast play alone. As they are loaded with nerve endings associated with sexual arousal.

Crouton19 · 19/03/2023 10:29

@ArcticSkewer The function as a place to rest a side plate of cake/mug of tea is a useful one!

That's not my perspective on mine!
My nipples are more sensitive than my clit - and my clit serves no purpose at all other than sexual pleasure but I am not having that removed either!
I suppose if there was an operation that could reduce size without affecting nipple sensitivity I might be tempted ... large can be annoying for clothes. But I can rest my cake plate on them so I'd miss that
