Graham Linehan interview in The Times (17 March 2023)

From both ends of the trans debate, I am told his interventions are “counterproductive”, “a net bad” and “unhinged”. Some gender-critical women — that is, women who agree with him — believe he craves attention, martyrdom and leadership of a movement whose fight is not even his. One mentions that he was once pro-porn and sex work, which he admits to being before “talking to feminists” changed his mind. Over on the other side of the battle lines, an activist dismisses him as a fringe character full of hot air. None of these people is prepared, however, to go on the record, mostly saying they fear he will retaliate in his customary style.

There is one admirable exception. She is Kathleen Stock, the radical feminist philosopher who resigned from the University of Sussex in 2021 after a campaign by “queer, trans and non-binary” students who wanted her fired. “Graham and I have clashed in the past,” she says, “and we probably aren’t each other’s favourite people. But I think it’s fair to say he’s genuinely committed to fighting what he believes is a woman-harming and child-harming ideology (and I agree with him on that); and he talks to some demographics — particularly ordinary blokes, who don’t really care so much about niceties of language and aren’t put off by his sometimes bludgeoning style — that others don’t necessarily reach.”

Hannah Barnes will be earning money off Time to Think (available at all good bookstores and, occasionally, Waterstones 😉).

😂

To quote part of @ScrollingLeaves post

"What a blessing it is for the lazier majority of humans when nature from time to time throws up a person who is single minded in their pursuit of truth and will simply not give up."

Whatever his reasons and motives, he is a brave man. I don’t see him as a saint, and I prefer it that way. I see him as a man who just couldn’t deny reality and live with himself.

I would imagine his recent time in the woke trenches has helped him see how deluded we can be when we are not hearing all sides and opinions in a debate, especially the most important such as detransitioners who have lived through the entire experience of being so influenced by a socially contagious tsunami of propaganda.

He understands the essence of this fight against Gender Ideology is protecting women’s rights and language and protecting children. Every person willing to help roll back this toxic dumpster fire of lies is OK in my book. We not going to agree on everything, but we do agree on priorities and that’s all that matters. Graham has already seen how dangerous it is to be too puritanical about your allies from his previous incarnation as a right-on wokester, as a result you can ignore the voices of the very people most negatively affected.

Agree

I mean he's not my cup of tea and I don't think - as this thread suggests - that he is this wholly selfless saint who has put his life on the line for women. I think there are varied reasons why he has such a commitment to this fight, and it's not JUST that he is motivated by outrage at the injustice of gender identity activism. And so what? That's fine too, so I'm not sure why I am being criticised. But he is clearly obsessed with this debate, there is no doubt about that. I partly understand why - it feels so crazy you can't help get really absorbed in the surrealness of it all - but it's also clearly very personal for him. His efforts at exposing the craziness are obviously motivated by wanting to be proven right as opposed to pure selflessness. Also he WAS a "woke"/TRA style campaigner pre 2018 himself, and a very loud one, which must add some complicated feelings for him

And as an active internet user he seems to tweet/post about this issue maybe every hour for what, 5 years?

Beautiful, Scrolling!

I'd be perfectly happy if he was earning £90k from substack subscriptions

yes, if he is supporting himself through this then well done glinner

StephanieSuperpowers · 19/03/2023 17:42

Yep, plus, subscriptions are voluntary. He's not stealing anything. If he's getting 90k, he's getting it from people who think that what he's doing has enough value to merit it.

Rainonthehorizon · 19/03/2023 17:38

Plus, potentially payments to the regular contributers.

I don't quite understand why someone always pops up on the Glinner threads to point out he earns money from subscriptions.😮 It's not this amazing gotcha they seem to think it is. I'd be perfectly happy if he was earning £90k from substack subscriptions (which he won't be but hopefully subscribers will continue to increase as word spreads).

Glinner provides a service and collation of GC news which is available for free and you have the option to support his substack via subscription. Don't want to pay? Then don't. I'm sure those who subscribe have worked out some of their money will be going to Glinner when they enter their credit card details.

Helen Joyce will have made money off her excellent book Trans. Hannah Barnes will be earning money off Time to Think (available at all good bookstores and, occasionally, Waterstones 😉). All good, they've all worked hard to produce something people want to purchase and read.

StephanieSuperpowers · 19/03/2023 17:24

He probably needs to pay tax too. I very much doubt this is a tax free income stream.

beastlyslumber · 19/03/2023 17:13

I don't think he gets all of that subscription fee - substack takes a substantial cut, I think. But good if he gets a living income from it. Hopefully he'll get closer to 6000 paid subscribers this year.

This isn't a hobby, or an obsessed, this is currently actually his job and I suppose in a way he is employed by thousands of subscribers - is that a healthier way of looking at it?

A nicely paid job too, £90K a year just from Substack subscriptions.

Ted is on Netflix, which GL gets money from, and Count Arthur Strong is now on BritBox.

Sorry. It’s IT Crowd on Netflix. Ted in on All 4

lifeturnsonadime · 17/03/2023 12:14

I think it's a sad article. Still implies that Glinner should STFU.

On another note, is Father Ted available on any streaming channel now? If not what a loss that is.

I respect Graham for standing firm on this issue but he comes across as a bit unhinged/obsessed. I don't think his intentions are wholly selfless - he is personally invested in being proven right on this issue as he believes trans rights activism is directly responsible for his personal life collapsing. So I'm not surprised he has such a tunnel vision. But I don't think it's healthy that he spends seemingly all of his time fixated on this. If you look at his internet activity since 2018 he has exclusively spoken about gender identity debate. It isn't healthy.

I’m as GC as they come but...

thatsgood · 19/03/2023 13:16

And as an active internet user he seems to tweet/post about this issue maybe every hour for what, 5 years?

I don't think it's healthy that anyone spends seemingly all of their time fixated on stalking someone's internet activity for 5 years, slamming them and taking the piss out of what this has cost them personally, when they have exclusively spoken about women's rights and the protection of children. It isn't healthy.

In fact it's 100% misogynistic and creepy. Yes, misogynistic because Graham is taking flack from men's right's activists for standing up for women's rights. Hellish creepy as well to persecute and try to silence anyone concerned about children's safety.

You think that's a good look? On a Women's Rights Board on a Parenting Forum? 😂

These creeps hate Glinner so much because back in 2018 and 2019 so many people first got an inking that something weird was going on from following Glinner on Twitter just for the jokes and then wondering what he was going on about in his serious tweets.

Now they are linked up with a massive network of resources, publications, campaigns and organisations, as well as the news that you don't see in mainstream media, via his Substack:

grahamlinehan.substack.com/

These creeps would not be putting so much time, effort and money into trying shut him up if he wasn't making a difference. Same with the women they focus on. The jibes and slurs are cuttingly personal but this is 100% political propaganda, aiming to undermine their popularity with the public.

Anyway, What's that thingie to search for? Oh yeah!

"I'm being sued by another trans rights activist"

Six days to go and another 10K carrots need planting!

His substack is his only source of regular income at present. He does not just tweet and rant about this issue - he investigates and correlates evidence, he provides analysis of legal, medical or political proceedings, and he provides a platform for others to publish on.

As a subscriber this is a service I am willing to pay for because I do not have the time or resources to do the research myself.

This isn't a hobby, or an obsessed, this is currently actually his job and I suppose in a way he is employed by thousands of subscribers - is that a healthier way of looking at it?

LexMitior · 19/03/2023 14:17

He was absolutely put through the wringer and professionally his own colleagues who had benefited from his talent were happy to do it. Much like Rowling, it seems that the creative arts has a lot of people who disrespect the writer who creates.

I hope he resurfaces - he is very funny, and his sitcoms are some of the best television ever made.

beastlyslumber · 19/03/2023 14:07

@thatsgood Trans rights activism IS directly responsible for the damage to his career and personal life.

He's an excellent person who has fought hard for women and childrens rights.

Who are you? What have you done for us?

Bumping this again because Graham could use some help with the last bit of gardening. You can find the details on the first place of his Twitter account

anyolddinosaur · Today 08:17
A reminder that more gardening is still needed. Googling "I'm being sued by another trans rights activist" will find a garden that is growing well but not quite there yet. I've contributed. Whether it's £1 or £100 please give what you can.

Thank you for letting everyone know. I have just done some digging on this spring day.
