Was that Elisa O'Donovan of the Green Party, who may run as a candidate for the Dáil in the next election? Some of her tweets are in this post, and she unequivocally supported the statement from a local "fake feminist" group:

I honestly don't know. I have done a search but an awful lot of people seem to have deleted their tweets on this.
Interestingly, I did come across this statement from another Limerick group. Some of the points are very true, such as the fact that Barbie was severely failed as a child. But others are completely missing the issue.
I don't think it was linked up thread, apologies if I missed it.
I don't have the original link, this is a copy and paste

"ROSA, the socialist-feminist group in Limerick, have said that they are “very disappointed” to see that the Limerick Leader had “uncritically published a statement from a so-called 'radical-feminist' group calling themselves Radicaillíní.” The article in question commented on the recent case of a troubled transgender teenager.

A spokesperson for ROSA, Aislinn O'Keeffe said that “groups such as the one mentioned are piling on this case to further their transphobic agenda, spurred on no doubt by recent statements by transphobe-in-chief JK Rowling. Trans women are far more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrators. As many as one transgender person is believed to be murdered globally every three days, though often there is no formal data collection on the matter so actual figures could be much higher.”¹

Speaking on the specific case reported on, Ms O'Keeffe went on to say, “The case of this violent person, who grew up in what appears to be an extremely violent and neglectful household, is a real indictment of a system that fails to protect women and children. If there had been proper state support in the form of domestic violence services and a functioning public mental health service could an early intervention with this clearly disturbed teen have made a difference to this outcome?

“Where a person poses a danger to other prisoners they ought to be separated from the general prison population regardless of whether it is an all-male or all-female prison. Perpetrators of gender-based violence need to be kept off the streets, and rehabilitated where possible, though unfortunately history has taught us that cases such as this are likely to come up against further systemic failures in the guise of the so-called justice system.”

Ms O'Keeffe concluded by saying, “Trans women are not the enemy. Trans women are women, and face many of the same discriminations that cis-women face with the added discrimination that comes with being trans in a society that thrives on inequality.”

The Greens are going to be destroyed at the next election. Which is a pity because climate change is real and very important. But they are simply too irresponsible to be allowed in government.

I think they - and People Before Profit - buy their political views as a job lot. They never really think about them or their real world consequences.

I remember there was a Limerick City Councillor, I can't remember her name, who made no comment on the presence of violent males being incarcerated with women, but was absolutely outraged that the Limerick Leader had dead named Barbie.
Because, that is just literal violence, you know.

Iirc wasn't there instructions that the violent, fully intact, biological males, could only be searched by female prison officers?
I think that it was a violation of the rights of those biological males to be searched by male prison officers?

Oh that's too good - Limerick feminists blame it all on 'cis' men and white supremacy .

Ireland is 96% white. You could go snowblind walking around Limerick. This is desperate.

Then why can't they do this in a MALE prison where he belongs??

“ Barbie“ is in a women’s prison because under the law in Ireland “ Barbie” is a woman... that lays bare the fundamental issue with Self ID.
It seems that we can’t do much about

Now at last we can speak openly about it. It’s not just the women in Limerick prison, the staff are also vulnerable.
Women on here have known about this terrible situation and tried to raise this for a long time
This man is a deeply disturbed and should be an appropriate place where he will cause no harm to anyone. Even in a locked mental institution what about the others held there? And the staff ?

This has to be one of the most shocking, eye-opening threads I’ve ever read on MN.

The original MN thread on the case and Gript (a right wing media source) were the only places I really saw the real facts discussed.
Other papers did report on the legal side of the case, but didn't mention the sex of the person involved, which of course was the real story.
It shone too much of a light in the lack of safeguards with Self ID and Ireland wasn't willing to have that discussion.
The government is still desperately trying to avoid having that discussion.
That is why I think that the upcoming referendum will be interesting to watch. It might go in a direction that the government didn't anticipate.

Then the Limerick Leader published a story and were soon denounced on Twitter as transphobic. They deleted a tweet linking to the story.

Yes, I remember. Here's what Limerick "feminists" were most concerned about:

I also remember this from 2020 and it's a truly horrific story. I remember when Barbie left court there was a group of teenage girls outside calling Barbie's name like Barbie was a pop star. They seemed genuinely excited to meet Barbie.

Bizarre, isn't it? The response to a story about a violent, troubled, and dangerous transwoman who fantasises openly about enacting violence on women and girls is 'transwomen are not a threat to cis women'.

Utterly weird.

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command

Just to clarify, to me, the definition of media blackout means absolutely no reporting at all whereas this story has been reported widely across Irish SM platforms and on national broadsheets, eg Irish Times, The Irish Independent. So not a complete media blackout but the National News outlet RTE has remained quiet.

I still content Gript is not a reliable source and will not open or read any Gript links.

Widely accepted in Ireland that Gript is completely discredited as a reliable source and its only audience are the tinfoil hat brigade.

It’s an absolute shitshow and as an Irish person living in Ireland I’m very disturbed by it all.

Over the years we have celebrated introduction of same sex marriage, the rights for a women to seek an abortion at home, and so much more to erase years of oppression of women and in one foul sweep undo it all with the Gender Recognition Act.

And just to reiterate:

In 2020, Tusla pressured media outlets to not report on this. They sent threatening letters to any outlet who did report. Although the story was at first reported on widely, all of those articles were subsequently withdrawn. Even the Gript one.

The story is being reported currently, yes. We are three years down the line.

If you're not willing to read up on any sources that do report on the issues you're not really going to be able to take part in any discussion.

You could read the court report I linked to, I guess, if that source meets your approval.

johnnytightlips · 17/03/2023 11:35

It didn't pull my comment in.
The first video isn't available in Ireland due to a court order in our domains. VPN works though.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 17/03/2023 11:34

Slightly off topic but I don't understand why the GRA, that changed the status of both women and men, didn't need a referendum, given that women are mentioned in the Constitution. Ditto why the upcoming referendum which is about the equality of the sexes is being billed as being about gender.

@Timeflieswhenyourehavingfun significant parts of this story were subject to reporting restrictions by court order, mainly relating to this person's background. This may have been to protect the integrity of the trial process, to hide failures by Tusla, or some other reason. Gript sought to stand up to that but were forced to back down and remove their reporting. Other media only reported the allowed "facts" e.g. that a "woman" had threatened to rape "her" mother.

The court order even extended to international comment - this video by Rose of Dawn is still blocked in the country youtu.be/r6bGo2Dy3fc and this one by Blaire White was IIRC youtu.be/ublfBpy0PQs

StillTish and JL's reports in 2020 for Graham Linehan's newsletter are also worth reading for background:

It can be watched using a VPN.

That court link makes uncomfortable reading. This person is clearly very very damaged and currently unable (or unwilling) to control himself.

He’s assaulted his mother in the past (severely enough to be put in the care system at 10) and had to be pulled from a number of family placements AND care homes where other children were present.

He deliberately antagonises or attacks children and adults, focusing almost exclusively on girls and women and more than one of the psychiatrists who’ve assessed him have said he plans (what he perceives as) counter-attacks and ‘reprisals’ in advance. They’ve also stated he’s not suffering from a mental illness - this is learned behaviour.

They even assessed his reporting of ‘gender dysphoria’ as going through a checklist exercise; he knows what to say, but isn’t feeling it, and there’s the implication that the trans-identifying child he was temporarily alongside in a care setting has influenced his presentation.

But THIS is someone who the Irish authorities think is a good fit for a women’s facility?

Tie unpopular reforms to more popular ones (marriage equality) and it offers a veil of protection (get things done under the radar so to speak)

I remember reading that when the story originally broke.
I find it really hard not to have a huge amount of sympathy for that child. The child really never had a hope of becoming a happy well adjusted adult.

It just makes me so angry that in 2015 Irish politicians were so consumed with a "be kind" euphoria when they voted for the GRA (unanimously?) , that basic the safety of women and girls wasn't even an afterthought.

Penultimate para of the Gript article, which is, as I said, now removed:

'Should the Barbie Kardashian story disappear from our pages, some day, then you, the public, will know that the state has won, and has succeeded in keeping secret a most disturbing series of events.'
