KJK opposing fertility treatment for gay couples

KJK seems to have an ongoing beef with same sex couples having fertility treatment. Why? How is this benefiting women's rights?

Is is definitely not benefiting lesbian rights.

It also appears to be attracting all the homophobes on Twitter.

We’ve done this to death already, haven’t we?

Lots of us disagree with Big Fertility and think it’s bad for women as a class.

That some women benefit from it personally does not make Big Fertility good for women.

🤨

Good job the NHS doesn’t then, isn’t it! The law dictates that any donor child in the UK (NHS or private) can access details of their donor when they turn 18.

Yep. I welcomed that change in the law.

Still, there is a whole childhood & adolescence to get through before that info can be accessed.

If a child has grown up experiencing genealogical bewilderment I don’t think a name on a paper at the age of 18 will undo it?

lesbian couples getting IVF or IUI with donated sperm is totally ok.

gay men being able to enter into entirely voluntary arrangements with women who just want to be a surrogate as a charitable act is also ok.

offensive, wrong and rightly illegal in the uk is the commodification of women's bodies into a paid enslavement arrangement. any payment is unacceptable coercion. it is akin to rape and no kind of bought-consent can be freely made and therefore valid.

SapphosRock · 22/02/2023 15:05

KJK is just being factual but the Tweet is extremely tone deaf to all the lesbians who have taken out huge loans and remortgaged their houses to be able to afford fertility treatment while straight couples are routinely offered it for free.

Not being able to conceive with the person you love is very much a fertility issue.

And no it's not just a case of finding a sperm donor and a syringe, it is a lot more complex than that.

If a woman's husband had no sperm would she just pop out and find a donor and a syringe? Or would they seek proper medical fertility assistance.

Lesbians can also have fertility issues. Please see my five miscarriages.

Shamoo · 22/02/2023 15:02

Through a clinic, before anybody jumps on me to point out private deals can obviously break the rules.

I’m anti the use of anonymous donor gametes for all couples and singles of any sexuality.

I don’t think the NHS should create babies who don’t know who their biological parents are.

Thelnebriati · 22/02/2023 15:01

By ''fertility treatment'' do you actually mean surrogacy?

FOJN · 22/02/2023 15:01

RoseslnTheHospital · 22/02/2023 14:42

Why have you posted a screenshot of someone else's tweet that is homophobic, rather than just posting the original KJK tweet which is factual and not homophobic?

Because Sapphos is one of the real feministsâ„¢ who keep a list of all of KJK's crimes. She contributes her distain for KJK on every thread where the woman is mentioned but today she appears to have had time to trawl social media for "evidence" of further crimes.

In short this is yet another, very boring, KJK hate thread. I swear her haters spend far more time thinking about her than I do and I'm full of admiration for her.

Slothtoes · 22/02/2023 14:57

Isn’t Posie Parker just being factual here? Two men or two women TTC may individually or both have fertility issues (just like anyone else may have fertility issues)- but the same-sex couple TTC permanent lack of ability to conceive is more of a social or situational form of infertility. It is not automatically a medical form of infertility. Though a same-sex couple may of course have that challenge too.

azimuth299 · 22/02/2023 14:56

I don't know the context of what she was saying, but she says nothing about opposing fertility treatment for gay couples in this tweet. She just says that it isn't an issue with fertility that gay couples don't naturally conceive children.

She's probably referencing gay men using surrogacy labeled as a 'fertility treatment' when in fact it's nothing to do with their fertility and everything to do with commodifying women's bodies.

As someone who has been through fertility issues and treatments I find it almost offensive to call it infertility. It's not it's just a basic fact of life. But I do see an awful lot of male couples in particular bleating on about their infertility. They will never have to go through a HSG, a miscarriage, injecting themselves with steroids. They have no clue.

Yep.

And this is the issue, if men can reframe their lack of uterus and eggs as ‘infertility’ and demand that their ‘infertility’ should be ‘treated on the NHS’ it’s women who will suffer, as surrogates and as egg donors (some of whom will have agreed to ‘donate’ eggs under the coercive pressure of funding/accessing her own infertility treatment).

MustardCress · 22/02/2023 14:54

KJK is absolutely correct and simply making a statement of fact. Of course two people of the same sex won’t be able to procreate together. What they are experiencing isn’t infertility or any kind of medical disorder with their reproductive systems.

Who, if anyone, should be able to have infertility treatment or what kind it should be is another debate altogether.

Floisme · 22/02/2023 14:52

Sapphos what you are saying is really offensive to women with medical fertility problems.
I'm very sorry to hear about your problems dimorphism Flowers

The very kindest thing I can say about your op, Sapphos is that it's thoughtless and utterly tone deaf. Please think about it.

Do you think by posting other tweet about same-sex couples that people will think Posey is responding to that?

i'm not on Twitter, but I don't think she is? Is she?

Posie’s tweet is a stand alone tweet.

The one Sappho posted isn’t even a reply, it’s a quote tweet.

It's not an infertility issue. A lesbian can get pregnant if she chooses. Nothing too technical.

Bit different from gay men buying babies from their mothers.

Including for straight couples where the man is infertile?

Or should the NHS only refuse to help lesbian couples?

This is a women's rights issue. A really important one.

I think it's debatable how much the NHS should help anyone with infertility.
But if a man can't get his female partner pregnant he is clearly infertile.
If a woman can't get her female partner pregnant, she's a lesbian - she's not infertile.
Not everything that some women would like to happen is a women's rights issue.

I have no idea why she's tweeting about it, but the tweet in the OP isn't wrong. A colleague of mine has had two children with her wife, using a sperm donor. She would not describe herself as "infertile", in fact I had a conversation with her (we were pregnant at the same time) where she said she was lucky to not have had any fertility issues.

OP - would you consider a single woman who wanted a child to have fertility problems?

Sorry, just to clarify, when I say the tweet in the OP isn't wrong, I mean the original tweet. Not the response. Which I disagree with

JacquelinePot · 22/02/2023 14:43

There is a discussion to be had about fertility treatment in general, how this fits into the NHS and who should be eligible for treatment.

The Venus Rising podcast has a lot of really interesting episodes about big fertility, ethics and impact etc.
