Anyone else hearing of backlash against trans ideology among their teens?

My 14 year old DS has been telling me that among his age group now there is no tolerance for Trans/NB TikTok influencers and that they are being ridiculed etc..

This is a very different attitude than when my older two (17 and 19) were at that age and it was the start of that trend and they would have been overtly respectful on that issue (would have avoided it mostly but not ridicule).

It seems it is now seen as being an 'older' person trying to be cool with the kids and a bit creepy.

Anyone else noticed this change or is it just here (Rep of Ireland)?

The unfortunate outcome for the more vulnerable children (and the ones I work with are very much from the lower class cohort) are that just as another poster says their son views this, 'the non cool kids trying to be cool'

This is a huge part of it for children with ASD or who have been previously abused or suffered trauma. They dont feel they fit in, they dont like their physicality or what it reminds them of, they dont understand their physicality or the feelings it gives them, they dont acknowledge or feel comfortable with their development or identify with other kids.

So the trans ideology and identity is very attractive to them, it feels initially like it makes sense to them, gives them a 'specialness' which means the can maintain their 'difference' and awkwardness but be sort of validated for it or rewarded

And society, rather than support those feelings or treat MH issues or treat emotional welbeing issues has just thrown these children into this by instantly validating, not questioning, allowing them to be both oppressor (which feels powerful) and the oppressed (which means lots of sympathy), its a powerful combination.

Children in the care of the state were one of the first cohorts targeted by trans activists. There are a number of groups and individuals who made a beeline for children's homes, groups of children, foster carers etc with "training" and "policy development"
These children - adrift from their families and trying to make sense of their lives had few resources with which to defend themselves against the idea of "re creation" and "fixing a flawed body". Hence the over representation of this group in the data.

Things are very different in the US

This is what worries me. The gender-woo came from the US, and I don't think it will go away until it stops being cool in the US as well - as the US is so culturally dominant. It sounds like it's not there yet. Maybe give it another year? Perhaps now the New York Times is starting to report a diversity of views, things might start to shift? (Not that teens read that paper, probably)

It’s so good to read that the tide may finally be turning in younger attitudes, but like others I have concern for those (mostly young women ) who may have experienced irreparable damage to their bodies.

There is irreparable damage elsewhere too - safeguarding, language, policies etc and the cost of this sociological madness is far reachIng. I’d love to be around in @50 years time to see this period described in history ( but sadly doubt I will!)

SidewaysOtter · 20/02/2023 14:37

As a PP said, nothing kills a trend like 'old' people being into it. When you're 13, that's anyone older than about 21! Some of the early adopters I've known in the whole NB/trans thing are now in their mid-20s so yes, they're seen as old.

I've always hoped that there was going to be an element of the relevant age group "growing out of it", like being an emo or a goth no longer being cool (not that there was ever anything wrong with being a goth <remembers own teenhood>). Seems like that's starting to happen, but I do feel a bit sorry for the kids who went with a new trend and now find themselves laughed at as "blue haired anime attention seekers". I mean, I wouldn't disagree with that description but to go from "pandered to" to "laughed at" isn't going to be a pleasant experience.

God, yes, I hope so. But it's going to take a long time for any of our friends' and families' poor little bearded transmen to recover from this. How do you face having probably put a wrecking ball through your health and relationships at the age of 20?

Completely agree. It’s more than just the bearded women, they may also be sterilised or mutilated. The whole thing is a ticking time bomb.

SmartHome · 20/02/2023 14:28

All my teens (18, 15, 12) roll their eyes when anyone mentions trans, rainbows or pronouns.

Just saw this, from the youth group of this Dutch political party:

twitter.com/adriaanjelle/status/1627289703350165504

'Dutch political party @D66's youth organization, @JongeDemocraten
, states that

  • "Pedophilia is a sexual orientation, which one is born with"
  • "Pedophiles have a higher chance of depression"

and that

  • "Schools should teach about pedophilia as a sexual orientation".'

Let’s hope that these groups decide to campaign loudly and proudly for this stuff.

The public need to hear this stuff. They need to know that presenting pedophiles as poor victims of unacceptable society and teaching acceptance of pedophilia in schools is actually the aim for these people.

It’s much better when they come straight out and tell everyone what their goals and values are.

That way they can be held to account.

This is all so heartening to read. I wonder though what's happening away from Terf Island though? I noted a couple of examples from Ireland and the Netherlands on this thread. Any thoughts from other really captured places - eg. Canada, or liberal parts of the USA?

Things are very different in the US, from what I can glean from friends there. One gay male friend in CA has a DS and a DD and the girl, who is now 15, is trans. She has a name that could either male or female, so didn't need to change it, but lives as a boy and our friend is completely accepting, and told us it's commonplace where they live.

Another friend in NJ has a DD who came out as non-binary a couple of years ago. She is also now 15 and was, for a time, binding her breasts and went by an confusing array of she/he/they pronouns. Friend is an artist and was totally on board with it all, referring to her DD by her new boy name and as 'they', which I found utterly confusing when speaking to her as 'they' to me is generally a plural pronoun, so I kept thinking she was referring to her DD + someone else, but of course she wasn't. Our friendship has, unsurprisingly, drifted so I'm not sure what's going on now, but last time we spoke she'd got her DD into sports bras, rather than binders, and seemed happy about that. However, she called my views 'toxic and cis-gendered' on one occasion, so who knows?

Fififafa · 20/02/2023 14:15

DS(20) was always sceptical about the Trans thing. He said it seems to be the annoying attention seekers announcing that they’re trans. There weren’t that many at school, but he came across a few “they/thems” at Uni, although he isn’t friends with any.
DD(17) just eye rolls and thinks that these are uncool kids trying to be cool. I’m paraphrasing.

I haven't seen this but I'm not surprised if it's happening. I hope it is! Trends change.

However, I'd also add that the majority of working class teens and children never bought as much into this in the first place. It is mostly the preserve of the privileged, middle class teen with clueless #bekind parents or status-seeking parents. In my experience, anyway.

I agree with this.

DS 15 is solidly GC and thinks all the trans stuff is ridiculous. DS 11 is completely unaware of it. Both at all boys schools, no trans kids AFAIK. DNiece 15 at all girls school is solidly TWAW and has lots of non-binary (female) friends. She cut her long hair off last year and we were all worried she was going to come out as NB, but has so far limited herself to lecturing us TERFy oldies. We're waiting for her to grow out of this tedious phase.

Where is the SLT in all this?

What of their obligations in relation to safeguarding and treating people
with basic respect?

They wouldn’t let someone set up a club to encourage anorexia or terrorist activity. But we’re all supposed to applaud a transwoman who thinks of teenage girls as ‘slags’ running a grooming club for gender ideology.

Tbh, the education system has serious questions to answer in all this.

This!
It's major safeguarding issue and the fact that senior staff have ignored, or worse, sanctioned is unbelievable.
The stories of grooming and abuse that will emerge from these groups will be off the scale as children mature and understand the reality of what actually happened.

UWhatNow · 20/02/2023 14:00

This whole ideology needs to roundly mocked and ridiculed because it is ridiculous. I’ve noticed a lot more stand up comedy is taking the piss now - maybe people are getting bolder?

Zebracat · 20/02/2023 13:56

Like others, I’m so worried for those who got caught up in it and had the surgery and took the hormones. I would never be anything other than kind, but kindness doesn't really help much when people wake up to the damage they have inflicted upon themselves. Never mind the collateral damage. I of my adult Children has fallen out with me because of my transphobia, which amounted to not buying a binder for an asthmatic underweight Care experienced 14 year old, who is now at 19, I hope, past it all.

I totally agree. If it had not been a training school for her she may well have approached someone in the SLT to raise concerns, but she sensed that some mebers of the SLT were on board with the whole thing.

It is a very ethnically diverse girls' school in an area of economic deprivation and some of the girls attending had issues relating to trauma, unstable home life, etcBy the time she was due to leave for another placement she had been made aware that a few parents had made complaints about this particular teacher.

A recent 'condition' which seemed to have taken off on tik-tok during lock-down and which has captured many girls is 'Tourette's'. Girls are definitely susceptible to social contagion.

RoyalCorgi · 20/02/2023 13:47

This is so fascinating, and I'm sure one day it will be the subject of a PhD thesis, or several.

One of the oddities of this, compared to other teen crazes, is that the adults are so on board with it. So teachers and other figures of authority are enforcing daft pronouns and endorsing the pretence that boys can be girls and vice versa. Surely that was always going to create a backlash sooner or later? I wonder what teachers do when they find children refusing to go along with it.

One 14 year old girl my daughter has heard of, in another school, came back to school after lockdown and declared she was now trans and wanted to be known by the name of 'Gizmo'

I’ve heard of a class in a local comp who responded to a NB identifying classmate’s outlandish new name by insisting they all be referred to by their gamer tags and Instagram nicknames. If ‘trans rights are human rights’ then obvs all humans should have the right to be called weird names by the teaching staff and keeping it secret from
their parents!

Talking of gamer tags, I get the distinct feeling that some young men who go on to identify as trans model themselves on their favourite female avatars.I'm thinking of one specific case that I'm familiar with, but I suspect that gaming/cos-play/fantasy is at the root of many MTF transitioners.

hryllilegur · 20/02/2023 13:39

NotHavingIt · 20/02/2023 13:29

On a more serious note, one of my daughter's teacher training schools ( an all girls' school) had a lunch-time LGBT club. It was run by a young MTF gay man who the girls were expected to call 'Miss". According to my daughter there were a number of quite vulnerable girls attending this lunch-time club, and they were being encouraged to consider whether their distress might be due to them "really being trans".Behind their back, and to my daughter, this teacher referred to some of the girls as " little slags". Nice!

It has become not an infrequent sight for me to see young bearded women walking around. I passed by another a few days ago. She was quite slightly built and very 'feminine looking' ( definitely a girl ) but with a dark beard. It was such a bizarre sight, almost like the bearded ladies you used to get as travelling circuses and freak shows. It is disturbing how common this has become, and how medically negligent.

Aleaiactaest · 20/02/2023 13:37

14/15 year old teens wouldn’t ridicule but don’t think it is cool - they think the trans and woke movement is “passé’. They are all into 90s skating and snowboarding stuff and I am more worried that that generation is now embracing the old fashioned misogyny of the 90s.

This is the really tragic thing about it.

Adults have seriously failed to protect vulnerable young people from this ideology and the longer-term consequences.

It’s ridiculous that this ideology has been promoted as ‘kindness’ and ‘the right side of history’.
