Anyone else hearing of backlash against trans ideology among their teens?

My 14 year old DS has been telling me that among his age group now there is no tolerance for Trans/NB TikTok influencers and that they are being ridiculed etc..

This is a very different attitude than when my older two (17 and 19) were at that age and it was the start of that trend and they would have been overtly respectful on that issue (would have avoided it mostly but not ridicule).

It seems it is now seen as being an 'older' person trying to be cool with the kids and a bit creepy.

Anyone else noticed this change or is it just here (Rep of Ireland)?

The movie Heathers makes a mockery of the more hippy, "get in touch with your feelings" teacher who wants to have a circle of hugs after the spate of suicides (murders). The cool kids and some veteran teachers roll their eyes, but the vulnerable kids get caught up in the suicide contagion, cheered on by the activist teacher. I think today's TRA teachers with the "glitter family" "you're safe with me" overreaching is exactly the same thing. The Heathers teacher's behavior is both ridiculous AND a direct result of her massive ego. My niece had a similar teacher who came out as non-binary over COVID and gender is ALL the woman seems to talk about, centering herself as both leading the movement and elevating the gender fluid kids. Unsurprisingly, there's a group of kids who see these special kids as teacher's pets and roll their eyes behind their backs. History repeats.

Bloody love that film.
Especially when the head teacher says to her 'you'll call me when the rocket lands'

DGD1, ASD, 11 going on 15, just rolls her eyes when the subject is mentioned.

Once any fad becomes too popular people revile it and move on to something else.

DS 2 15 is very much of the #be kind type but is happy to discuss. Listened to a bit of a Helen Joyce interview together on a Marshall matters podcast. He immediately disagreed with it but when pinned down (not literally) he admitted that trans women should not participate in female sports nor be in 'sensitive' spaces for biological women like public bathrooms, refuges etc. Tbh he only knows of 1 'trans' teen at school (F to M) so don't think it's that much of a trend within his circle.
DS 1 20 is very much GC but he's fairly traditionally right wing, would have voted for Brexit etc.

I voted for Brexit. I am a Bennite Socialist (nationalisation of utilities etc. the social contract rather than the patriarchal capitalism of neo-liberalism). Tony Benn, well to the left of Mr Corbyn, was against joining the EEC for the reasons I voted to leave it, that it impinged on UK sovereignty (it also did the working classes no good whatsoever since free movement kept down wages and removed opportunities for training - so much cheaper to get someone in from another country than train a local). Being pro-Bexit is not axiomatically right-wing any more than knowing that TWAW is a lie is axiomatically right-wing.

Brilliant.

What's wrong with trans women are trans women anyway? As long as they are protected from crime and live the life they chose, surely logically trans women know they cannot change biology but can live as a trans woman. I don't think the radical lot of TRA have helped people who just want to go about their life and not enter women's safe spaces/sports/refuges/sex clinics.

People like JKR, Prof Winston etc who speak up are bayed at or insulted but ultimately you cannot argue with facts.

I know, right?!

I watched this one young woman today who basically said she'd always gone along with 'JK is transphobic' but after the article she actually looked at the tweets. She was completely baffled by it.

It did irritate me though, she was very confused as to why women weren't saying anything - so I did leave a comment to say that women had been saying this for years, and for their troubles were kicked off social media platforms, arrested, and threatened with rape or death. She didn't respond but I hope it leads to a little more introspection for her and others!

IME end of year 8 & year 9 are the ‘coming out’ years and then 6th form (if different location to school) are the ‘going back in’ years.

So true in DD's year at an all girls' selective (and Stonewalled) school. I have been interested to see that the 'first to declare' transboy in her Y8 form has now (in 6th form) reverted to her given name and no longer uses male pronouns.

I'm also interested to see the strong correlation with autism being acknowledged more widely, although I think teachers, parents and clinicians have been aware of this for years.

It used to be completely impossible to talk to DD (now 17) about any of this, ever since she started in Y7. She used to burst into tears and tell me I was 'literally hurting' trans people if I questioned any of it. She's recently been able to engage in slightly more reasonable discussion about biological sex, male puberty and women's safety in sport and prisons. Partly just greater maturity and associated critical thinking skills I think, plus some wearying friendship experiences over the years, such as keeping up with frequent name and pronoun changes.

Having said that I visited DS (21) at university yesterday and realised when I got up that I'd been sitting having coffee in his girlfriend's room under a TWAW sticker on the noticeboard above my head. I still wouldn't dare raise it with that age group.

I'm on TikTok, and either the algorithm now knows me really well, or the tide is turning.

I've seen many more people actively holding people like Dylan, Jeffrey and that other boy whose name I forget to account. I've also seen many more trans people coming out and saying actually, trans women are trans women, not the same as women. And I've just started to see a trend of men and women who might have previously wholeheartedly endorsed the ideology, now questioning it. The article in the NYT and the farce with Nicola Sturgeon, as well as many American clinics banning treatment for minors has done a lot.

Brilliant.

Sorry I didn't actually answer your question - my teenage kids are pretty oblivious to the whole thing, but I'm seeing many more young people on TikTok having a more 'negative' opinion. Also a lot more people saying JK Rowling did nothing wrong.

Dymaxion · 20/02/2023 19:29

the Isla Bryson/Adam Graham issue peaked more than a few people

My daughter who was very onboard with trans ideology, realised that the man who sexually assaulted her, could have claimed to be a women and she would have had to stand up in court and describe his penis and what he did with it and then he could have been sent to a female prison.

My teenagers ignore them. Too much trouble if they ‘misgender’

Oblomov23 · 20/02/2023 19:19

Thank goodness for this. I hope this trend continues. Most teens I know are quite easy going and don't really care or mind about most things, what someone presents as, but do think this is all bullshit re pronouns, men competing in women's hockey etc.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/02/2023 19:16

Indeed Crypto. She has a friend starting on testosterone. I'm hoping no free samples come her way.

Eyerolls from my 2 teenagers. Eldest says it’s the drama kids that keep changing pronouns

yep, and the children on the spectrum and the ones who are crying out for attention and changing gender or saying you are non binary gives you attention in spades. It also means everyone has to be careful not to 'mis-gender' you.

It's a sad situation, maybe sanity might return again? Here's hoping.

AnnoyedwithGossips · 20/02/2023 19:10

In time the damage of promoting changing gender with young children will be court cases (they have started) and young people failed by adults in education/social care and the other places where promotion of changing your gender was very 'in fashion'.

A couple of young people I know questioned and fortunately have sensible parents who didn't pursue the change requested at the time. They then became non binary and one is now back to the original sex and the other tom boy thankfully didn't take hormones to be 'more male' so continues as a tom boy as people did years ago. They were very lucky. With the wrong parents or wrong advice they could have actively arrested their birth sexual development and taken hormones which might have messed them up both physically and mentally as it has with others.

It’s a rock and a hard place situation, isn’t it?

In some ways, a part time job might well be the sort of real-world experience that demonstrates that we cannot control how others perceive us, that lovely old folk and inquisitive kids will always see straight through the artifice and probably say so out loud.

And on the other hand, the last thing our kids need is access to cash to spend on testosterone and surgery, especially in the current climate, where any remaining safeguards are largely overridden by paying for it privately.

I try and keep the gender stuff as neutral as possible and point out that I wouldn’t happily nod along with any cosmetic surgeries for a teenager, whether that be silicone breast implants or a mastectomy.

Could you advise them to 'wait and see if the technology improves in a few years'?

Nicedayout22 · 20/02/2023 19:08

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 20/02/2023 15:58

Ridiculing the ideology, not the kids themselves.

As far as I can tell it’s creepy trans adults on TikTok such as Jeffery Marsh and Dylan Mulvaney who have turned thousands of teens off the whole trans shebang, rather than their vulnerable peers.

’Influencer’ celebrities aren’t always a positive thing.

Oh, they're positive 😁👍...just not in a way they'd like

After the lockdown one girl returned to my granddaughter's primary school ( about 10 years old) and declared she was now a boy. The school had not come across this before, but they permiitted her to wear the PE tracksuit, rather than the girls school uniform.

The girl's friends, of a similar age, were confused and a bit upset when she insisted on calling them " transphobic" whenever they accidentally 'misgendered' her. That was not very kind. You see, It works both ways.

Many children and teenagers can see this for what it is, but they are still expected to bend over backwards and contort both themselves, and the language, in order to accommodate such preciousness.

I'm sure there are many children who have emotional and other difficulties in their family lives and in their own growing identity, but they don't expect to be centred and treated more specially than anyone else.

Very true - it's easy to make a mistake with a name when suddenly someone changes it and then the parents of the precious primary school kiddie run around shouting if a wee child accidentally uses the old gender or name.

ArabellaScott · 20/02/2023 13:08

What is sad is that there are a few 'trans' identifying kids in the local high school, and I'm told people just steer clear of them to avoid getting into any sort of bother. Everyone knows what happens if you speak up on these issues. They just stay well away, and say nothing.

Sadly, I think this is true. The kids know that they need to walk on eggshells with this stuff so they just avoid anyone who's involved with it.
Unfortunately, I've seen this in my friend group and hobby groups too. People start off supportive but they only have to be publicly chastised once and they'll just decide its not worth the potential conflict.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 20/02/2023 18:57

The US/UK differences came up on
another thread recently so just to reiterate what I said then, I do think it’ll be harder for the US to turn things around based largely on population size (as well as the two party system increasing adversarial attitudes).

It’s just much easier to capsize a small boat than a big ship.
Canada is more like England population wise (and NZ similar to Scotland) but both Canada and NZ have made difficult to reverse legal changes in recent years that the UK and the US have not (yet).

Ultimately intersectional ‘woke’ ideologies are unsustainable because ‘minorities’ are not a homogenous blob and the rights associated with one minority group can easily conflict with the rights associated with another.
Just one look at how diverse the current Tory government is in terms of race/ethnicity & religious beliefs and the idea that anyone non-white is politically progressive crumbles to dust.
Plenty of gay Tory MPs too (and the first trans MP, Jamie Wallis is also a Tory. The first trans MEP was a UKIPper).

AnnoyedwithGossips · 20/02/2023 18:56

I think some are getting it now. Some realise that you might want to identify as a cat but it doesn't actually mean you are one or should be treated like one in the same way that saying you feel like you are a woman even though born male doesn't make you one.

I think the brighter ones realise that logically you cannot alter you sex and DNA is set at the sex you are born at but can alter your gender if you wish....

Nice to see some of the younger ones actually questioning the TRA brigade pushing the agenda.

The perverts trying to get into women's safe spaces hasn't helped the trans people just living quietly at all. The pervs/rapists using the trans ideology to further their warped ends doesn't help.

Teatime55 · 20/02/2023 18:54

All the trans kids I am aware of, their mothers are fully on board. Not quite the rebellion I’m sure it should be.

This includes one teenager who has picked almost the same name as their sister! Which frankly I find a bit disturbing and says a lot about the dynamics in their family (she’s a golden child).
