Anyone else hearing of backlash against trans ideology among their teens?

My 14 year old DS has been telling me that among his age group now there is no tolerance for Trans/NB TikTok influencers and that they are being ridiculed etc..

This is a very different attitude than when my older two (17 and 19) were at that age and it was the start of that trend and they would have been overtly respectful on that issue (would have avoided it mostly but not ridicule).

It seems it is now seen as being an 'older' person trying to be cool with the kids and a bit creepy.

Anyone else noticed this change or is it just here (Rep of Ireland)?

Unfortunately because most of the kids identifying as trans were already struggling socially due to autism, trauma, bullying etc. many of the younger Gen Z kids look at older trans teens and see them as weird and losers. They don’t think being trans is cool. I have heard comments from younger kids (11-13) and they prefer to avoid the trans kids. They admire older kids who are skilled socially or athletically or artistically or whatever. I think they also think the older trans kids are immature. They just don’t want to emulate them anyway.

This is an issue. DS2 and his friends definitely avoid the trans kids. They are very obviously troubled young people and the trans ideology - plus how it’s being handled at school - are making them more socially isolated. They are just friends with each other and everyone else avoids them entirely, both because of the danger of being called ‘transphobic’ if they don’t police their language enough and because the trans kids seem to entirely define themselves and their interests by trans ideology (so the other kids just have nothing in common with them).

Things were crap for lots of kids in the 90s when I was at school (especially for gay kids or those with MH issues), but at least none of the teachers were setting up celebratory bulimia clubs and offering advice/encouraging advice giving about the best laxatives.

My dd is 17. She understands basic biology and knows that people can't actually change sex. She believes in the importance of protecting single sex spaces and she recognises that notions of gender are largely based on sex stereotypes that aren't helpful to anyone. She knows that gender is not actually a thing. That said, she would not ridicule anyone who does buy into gender ideology, she would respect people's chosen names and pronouns etc, and she is disturbed by what she perceives as some of the more aggressive feminist rhetoric on this subject, which she thinks actually alienates a lot of young people from their cause.

I think it is good that they are thinking differently but it's not very nice to ridicule people. I wouldn't be happy if my DC were doing that.

Not nice to do it to their faces, but I see nothing morally wrong with privately ridiculing people who believe ridiculous things.

It would be interesting to see if there is a 'backlash' that correlates with the increase in young women seeking treatment for 'gender dysphoria' - an unexpected result of reinforcing gender stereotypes, is that young women reject them altogether. This potentially affects straight men, and therefore cannot be tolerated.

Yes I wonder about this. My colleagues daughter has gone from presenting as being a non-binary lesbian to being a gay man and is on a gay dating site. They're going to have a mastectomy at some point and are taking testosterone. So basically they are a heterosexual woman who is actively avoiding heterosexual men probably due to some sort of trauma.

Here in the UK I do know two parents with trans female kids who want to be male, and it’s causing no end of difficulties. The parents are affluent middle class, Guardian readers, and are supportive of their kids, calling them their new name and pronouns.

The difficulties are that the kids really seem troubled, one has huge mental health problems which they insist are all about being a boy but I’m not so sure, they don’t want to change their all girls grammar school but want to be treated as a boy with male toilets etc, and the other one has been bullying her parent and I do wonder if other kids see some of the problems and just think ‘steer clear’?

CherriesSpring · 22/02/2023 01:14

Have Irish nephews and they are not sold on any of it. They see social media as being dominated by teenage girls though who will pounce on a tiny word they say wrong so they don’t share these views publicly. They are very supportive of their male friends coming out as gay, which to them is different. Some of the people they know who are trans seem really troubled.

The girls are more supportive of trans ideology, but generally because it seems that girls are more dominant language wise on social media.

OP it's heartening to hear you say this as you're in ROI. I'm in NI & whilst trans ideology had started to raise it's head here, down south seemed well and truly caught in its grasp.
I'm so happy to hear that Irish teens are starting to see through this.

It must be horrendous for those parents of Rapid Onset girls.

Mind you I mentioned a primary age girl earlier on who returned to school after the lock-down and was idetifing as a boy. She has an older sister who apparently identifies as non-binary. Both parents, I believe, are psycho therapists, or certainly in that field.

Do you remember the phenomenon of ‘Indigo Children’ from about 20 years ago?

Sometimes I suspect the ‘trans children’ and ‘nonbinary kiddos’ of activist/therapist parents are just the latest version:

Loads of people are staying quiet about it at work.

The civil service is awash with people who think it’s utter, dangerous nonsense but don’t feel they can raise that because they fear they’ll be excommunicated.

Higher education is too. Wrong speak in the humanities and social sciences can be career ending.

There will be a flood when the dam comes down.

Same here (public services)

NotHavingIt · 21/02/2023 18:26

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 21/02/2023 11:24

Definitely. Some parents become committed transactivists (see Susie Green as an obvious example),

The prepubescent ‘trans kids’ are often quite different to the teens. The little kids are picking up positive and negative messaging around GNC behaviours from inside the family, whereas the teens are usually coming across a trans narrative elsewhere (school, internet, TV) and then blindsiding their parents with it.
Some parents of teens are delighted to get on board with it and behave much like the parents of the younger ‘trans’ kids but a lot of the parents of teens are bewildered/scared or actively GC. If a teen is already 16 (or very close to it) the parents often have very little say in what happens next, as schools and youth groups have been allowed to refer to GIDS for quite a number of years, and schools will change names on registers on the child’s request.

Online hormone prescribers such as Gender GP will provide scripts to 16 year olds without parental permission (and sometimes even younger).

It must be horrendous for those parents of Rapid Onset girls.

I'm beginning to think the majority of people of all ages don't believe in genderwoo but have been conditioned not to let on that the emporer has no clothes.

This is borne out by some anonymous surveys eg yougov

Agree. I stay quiet about it as I just can't risk my job. Same with DH.

MeanCanadianLady · 21/02/2023 15:58

Actually I've noticed a lot of Gen Z's especially the young ones really hate it but they have been trained well to watch their mouths. I have a hobby that attracts a lot of really 20's something and they really don't like it. My niece and her friends make a frownie face when the subject comes up but keep quiet.

SidewaysOtter · 21/02/2023 15:54

I think it’s interesting that people who are quite rational and fallow the science on things like covid and climate change, throw their brains out the window with gender ideology.

That's very true. The two "wokebro" LOJ types that I know pride themselves on their scientific rationality. But they have suspended their critical thinking facilities when it comes to TWAW Hmm

DevilinaCardigan · 21/02/2023 15:31

SweetSakura · 21/02/2023 08:34

Our teens are all very science oriented so the idea of denying biological reality baffles them I think. But they know it's a controversial area to discuss at school.

Me too @Abra1t. I can't discuss this stuff with my liberal US friends, because I'd lose them if they had any idea how GC I am. They've been indoctrinated to such a degree that there is no reasoned discussion to be had.

It's very frustrating. They don't seem to understand that there are nuances.

Teatime55 · 21/02/2023 14:36

I think the trans movement has self imploded. I think a bit of public support has brought out all the hairy faced men wearing sparkly eyeshadow and wanting to support the trans kids. Or those revolting men wiggling their boobs in public.
Quite rightly everyone is distancing themselves.

TheBiologyStupid · 20/02/2023 21:00

I don't think that's what OP said. "[A]mong his age group now there is no tolerance for Trans/NB TikTok influencers and that they are being ridiculed etc.." No mention of online ridiculing, just laughing with friends about the various self-promoting "Trans/NB TikTok influencers". At least, that's how I read it.

@TheBiologyStupid That's exactly what I meant 😀 They are laughing among themselves at these men they view as creepy and trying to stay 'down with the kids' etc.

As someone with 1/3 kids suckered into this, I’m GLAD that the ideology is being mocked.

I’m also very supportive of kids and parents who are trying to give the whole thing a wide berth - it IS a social contagion and avoiding it and/or poking fun at it stops it spreading.

Believe me, if I could keep the genderwoo off of my own doorstep I bloody well would.

Being artificially nice to our kids in school /teachers policing pronouns on their behalf does not prepare our kids for the real world.

Teenagers need to learn resilience, not how to force their peers into begrudging compliance.

Excellent post.

RedToothBrush (As an aside, I find it fascinating that the latest Pokemon games are showing a shift and theres a big change planned. Some history: For the last 30 years Ash has been the hero of the cartoon and you could only play the games as a boy. News has recently come out saying that Nintendo is planning to axe him and replace him with a lead for the first time. The latest games - Scarlet and Violet allow you to play as a girl for the very first time.

As an aside to your aside, this is not right. I was playing Pokemon back in the Game Boy days and you could always choose to play as a girl. There is a funny bit in the character set up where Professor Oak asks you whether you are a boy or a girl (though not as funny as the part where he asks you to remind him what his grandson's name is).

In the US I think sport will also start to impact

There is finally some decent push-back in the US. The case of UPenn swimmer 'Lia Thomas' started it, a mediocre male who started competing as a woman and, of course, won everything and smashed women's records. Initially it was just parents speaking out on behalf of their DDs, who didn't dare, but with growing support from a wider section of society, some of the female swimmers have been emboldened to speak out now too.

A big problem in the US was that initial push back was from toxic right wingers, so anyone who considers themselves to be liberal or left wouldn't touch the issue with any barge pole, so it was all affirmation, rainbows, TWAW and anything else is hatred, bigotry, denying the right of trans people to exist, etc. That's why the NYT publishing an article last week in support of JK Rowling is so huge. The mainstream media bastion of liberal craziness has finally stopped drinking the Kool Aid.

I’ve still frozen or muted most of my US liberal politically active friends on sm, though. I knew I would crack and post mildly GC arguments and lose them as friends and bring down a
mob on myself.

So they never hear ripostes from anyone who isn’t very right wing and their world view continues. I have to wait for them to work it out for themselves.
