I feel like we're being trolled.

Maybe he could dangle his nipple tassels over the side of the boat and see if he gets any bites?

Not likely. Fish would ' run ' a mile at the sight of that monstrosity

Carlycat · 18/02/2023 00:57

Just when I thought this navel gazing cretin couldn't get any more self absorbed / attention seeking / narcissistic / pathetic / vomit inducing. I wish he'd fuck off up his own they / them arse

ErrolTheDragon · 18/02/2023 00:31

And them / they didn’t make sense before. As chairwoman or chair person didn’t make sense 50 years ago. Times change

You think really think chairwoman or chairperson didn't make sense in 1973?

Er... apparently the first recorded use of chairwoman was in 1699.Grin
And chairperson in 1899

They made sense then and still do because they're perfectly grammatical, sensible and useful words.

Unlike 'fisherthem' which is simply idiotic and indefensible.

The pronoun thing is part of an effort to change society by changing the language, 1984 stylee. And it's fucking clunky and ridiculous. Try writing some sentences using she/they pronouns - you will end up with a dogs breakfast of prose.

SinnerBoy · 17/02/2023 23:37

I don't like the words Sam Smith chooses to use to feel more inclusive. ( why are you so bothered by the language?)

I don't like the non-word he made up yesterday, because it's a big, hairy bag of wank. I'm bothered by the language, because it's not any real language.

He wants to manipulate me, by making me feel uncomfortable in using normal, everyday words and use a stupid non-word, to refer to him.

That makes him a right twat.

Anyone remember Herman's Hermits?

Or as they are now "Themthem's Themmits"

Best one🤣🤣

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 17/02/2023 22:28

Pedantry time: the coinage of "fisherthem" implies the standard form is fisherhim and fisherher.

TheBiologyStupid · 17/02/2023 21:52

You can lead a fisherthem to water, but you can't make them think...

😂😂😂
Many a true word spoken in jest!

TheBiologyStupid · 17/02/2023 22:15

Sam Smith has been promoted in these parts for years. Couldn't find the many annoying stories in the archives of the local rag about them's wealthy mother's efforts to big him up, but here's a piece from 2007:

Lozzybear · 16/02/2023 17:37

Surely it would be a fisher person if you wanted to make it gender neutral. He’s an idiot - well I would use a much stronger word than that!

Exactly! Just shows that "they" is not the sharpest tool in the shed if they don't even understand their own pronouns despite spending so much time angsting over them.

If "fisherman" was so objectionable then it should be "fisherperson" or indeed "angler" - presumably sams fishing friends don't refer to themselves as Fisher-hes and fisher-shes???

Wonnle · 17/02/2023 20:10

Will it lead a horse to water ?

You can lead a fisherthem to water, but you can't make them think...

TheBiologyStupid · 17/02/2023 21:49

he seems a bit menthol.

That should be "he seems a bit themthol" you bigot! 😉

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2023 21:23

TWETMIRF · 17/02/2023 20:36

Mean contains both man and men so extra gendered

Very true.
I declare I am being "womean". Stick that up yet non gendered arse, Sam Smith!

No, I'm pretty sure that 'fisherthem' will always sound ridiculous.

I'm genuinely wondering how many actual fishermen identify as non binary.

smith is an over privileged whining pita whose actions have already negatively impacted women - they can get in the sea

Using or denying the use of language dehumanises at worst and this removes moral value for the individual / group. There's a good study on it above.

There seem to me to be different types of comments on this thread

  • I don't like Sam Smith ( fair enough). Just say that
  • I don't like the words Sam Smith chooses to use to feel more inclusive. ( why are you so bothered by the language?)
  • I think the words are ridiculous and will mock those that use them

When you talk about dehumanising through the use or denial of language, what are your thoughts on females being described as menstruators, or womb havers, or vulva havers, or cervix havers?

You see, those words are used to describe many of us, against our will, and are deeply offensive. It's being forced on us, that's the language we are expected to accept. We are - sometimes literally - policed in our use of language by a tiny number of people.

Sam flaming Smith is part of that movement. So do forgive me if I don't feel particularly inclined to think he's anything other than a self serving prat.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 17/02/2023 20:51

Sam Smith is a rich celebrity. I am not interested in showing him deference because he's rich and famous. No matter whether he expects that deference to take the form of using them at his command, or being called His/Their Imperial Magnificence, or whether he wants me to tug my forelock as he passes.

It's 2023!

i am just wondering whether you realise where such hate of gender neutral pronouns may lead?

Oh don't be so silly. Even if they don't buy into pronoun pandering, everyone is perfectly used to people like Sam Smith calling themselves 'they'. That wouldn't have merited a thread. But appending 'them' onto the end of a noun when there are several obvious ways of saying that you go fishing without mentioning what sex you are is just laughably twatty. But no, we're all being so meeeeaan! Hmm
